If your Aadhaar name update is rejected, check the request status and rejection reason before submitting anything again. Correct document or data errors and file the name change at an Aadhaar enrolment centre; if the rejection says the update limit was exceeded, follow UIDAI’s exception process. For a request still pending, UIDAI says an update may take up to 90 days—not that every case will be resolved by then.
Check the request status and rejection reason
Use UIDAI’s myAadhaar Online Update Service and the acknowledgement number for your request: EID, URN or SRN, as applicable. UIDAI advises checking the status before deciding what to do next. A rejection reason helps distinguish a correctable document or data problem from a request that has hit the name-update limit.

UIDAI lists possible causes including a mismatch between the information entered and the supporting document, invalid or inappropriate documents, missing self-attestation, a scan that is not of the original document, transliteration errors, incorrect Aadhaar or mobile details, operator errors, exceeding a permitted limit, and failure to meet policy requirements. The document should bear the applicant’s name where required. See UIDAI’s Enrolment & Update guidance for rejection reasons and current requirements.

Compare the name and other details in the request with the supporting proof, and check that you selected the correct document type. Use a document UIDAI currently accepts for the purpose, in the applicant’s name where required. If uploading a document for a service that accepts uploads, provide a clear, high-resolution scan of the original and complete any required self-attestation. Correct the underlying problem rather than sending the same defective evidence again.

A name change cannot currently be completed through myAadhaar online self-service: that service covers address and document updates. Name changes must be submitted in person at an Aadhaar enrolment centre. Check UIDAI’s Enrolment & Update page for accepted documents and current centre instructions before you go.
If UIDAI says the name-update limit was exceeded
UIDAI’s current guidance says a name can be updated twice under the standard process. If your request is rejected for exceeding that limit, a further update is not a routine resubmission; you must request exception processing through UIDAI, and approval is not guaranteed.

UIDAI’s Your Aadhaar guidance describes enrolling at an Aadhaar centre with a Gazette notification for the name change and applicable proof of the old name. After a limit-exceeded rejection, contact UIDAI to request exception processing through the relevant Regional Office. The guidance refers to the EID on the latest enrolment slip and supporting documents. Since the required records can depend on the reason for the change—including marriage, divorce or adoption—check UIDAI’s live instructions for your case before sending sensitive documents.
