If you shared sensitive information with an AI chatbot, stop entering more, identify exactly what you sent, and use the service’s deletion and privacy controls. If it included a password, change it on the account it protects. A submission does not by itself prove the information was used to train a model, viewed by a person, or exposed publicly—but deletion may not erase every retained copy immediately.
Take these steps first
- Stop sharing sensitive details. Don’t add more identifying information while you work out what was sent.
- Review the conversation. Note whether it contained passwords or login credentials, financial or health information, confidential work material, or information about another person or a child. The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada advises people to avoid sharing sensitive or identifiable information with chatbots, alter identifying details, avoid entering other people’s or minors’ data, review privacy settings, and delete chat history where available (Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada).
- Delete or clear the conversation using the provider’s controls. Find the chat in your history and use the service’s delete option; if it has a separate clear-history control, check what that control removes.
- Review the account’s privacy settings and submit a privacy request if appropriate. Deletion, model-improvement preferences, and account deletion can be separate controls.
- If you shared a password or credential, change it at the service it unlocks. Secure the associated account using its available security controls. This is a precaution; disclosure to a chatbot does not establish that the credential was compromised.
- If the information belongs to someone else or relates to work, a client, a child, or a regulated record, follow your organization’s reporting process and applicable local privacy procedures. The right legal steps depend on the jurisdiction and circumstances.
What sharing information does—and does not—tell you
A chatbot provider may collect and store what you enter. Canada’s privacy regulator identifies possible uses such as training, profiling, and decision-making, as well as uncertainty about future use and the possibility that a chatbot could disclose information it has learned about a user. These are risks to consider, not evidence that a particular conversation was used for training or that its contents were exposed.

Do not assume a conversation is private simply because it is not public or because you used a temporary mode. Providers’ policies differ, and some allow limited access by personnel or service providers for specified purposes. For example, OpenAI says consumer-service content may be shared with trusted providers to deliver the service and may be accessed by a limited number of authorized personnel and providers for needs such as security, support, legal matters, or model improvement unless you opt out. ChatGPT: delete the chat separately from changing training settings
OpenAI’s controls vary by plan, account type, and workspace settings. In ChatGPT, Data Controls manages model-improvement preferences and other data controls; Memory settings are under Personalization. Check the current options for your account rather than assuming every account has the same controls (OpenAI: Data controls in ChatGPT; OpenAI: How OpenAI handles data in consumer services).

Turn off model improvement if you do not want new conversations used for training
OpenAI says turning off “Improve the model for everyone” means new conversations will not be used to train its models, but those conversations may still appear in history. This setting does not delete saved chats or hide them from your history. Delete the relevant chat separately if you want it removed from your account’s conversation history.
Know what Temporary Chat changes
OpenAI says Temporary Chats do not appear in history, do not create or update memories, and are not used to improve models while temporary. OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes. Before starting one, you can select whether personalization applies; if it does, existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins may be used. If you save a Temporary Chat, it becomes a regular chat and follows ordinary personalization and model-improvement settings.

Understand the stated deletion window and exceptions
OpenAI says cleared chats are deleted from its systems within 30 days, unless they have already been de-identified and disassociated from the user or must be retained for security or legal reasons. That is a stated policy window, not a guarantee of immediate erasure from every system. OpenAI says privacy requests can be submitted through its Privacy Portal or by emailing [email protected]; submitting a request does not guarantee a particular outcome.

Anthropic’s consumer guidance identifies Social Security numbers, card numbers, bank details, health or medical information, passwords, private login credentials, and confidential business or personal documents as highly sensitive. Anthropic says incognito chats are not used to improve Claude even when Model Improvement is enabled. However, conversations flagged by safety classifiers may still be used for internal trust-and-safety models, harmful-content detection, policy enforcement, or safety research. These statements concern Claude consumer products; do not assume commercial or API terms are the same (Anthropic: I would like to input sensitive data into my chats with Claude. Who can view my conversations?).

Visible chat history and server retention are not always the same
Clearing a chat from a device or removing it from visible history does not necessarily mean the provider immediately removes server-side data. For example, the GOV.UK Chat privacy notice says clearing history from a device does not immediately remove server data; it says conversations and linked data are kept for 12 months and then deleted. That period applies to GOV.UK Chat as described in its notice, not to other chatbots (GOV.UK Chat: privacy notice).
Protect future conversations
- Share only the minimum information needed to get an answer.
- Remove names, account numbers, addresses, and other identifiers when they are not essential; use altered details where practical.
- Do not paste passwords, private login credentials, or confidential records into a chatbot.
- Check the specific service’s settings before relying on a training opt-out, temporary or incognito mode, memory control, or deletion option. Their effects and exceptions differ by provider.
- For work or client data, follow your organization’s approved tools and data-handling rules.
Privacy rights and complaint routes depend on where you live
Your options depend on the service, whether the account is personal or managed by an organization, and the law that applies where you are. Canada’s privacy regulator reported on May 6, 2026, that a joint investigation into OpenAI’s ChatGPT identified concerns involving overcollection, consent and transparency, inaccuracies involving personal information, access, correction and deletion, and accountability. OpenAI implemented and committed to further measures; the federal complaint was found well-founded and conditionally resolved, while conclusions varied under the different laws overseen by the participating regulators. This regulatory outcome does not determine what happened to an individual conversation or establish an individual’s rights elsewhere (Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada: Joint investigation by Canadian privacy regulators into OpenAI’s ChatGPT leads to better protections for Canadians’ personal information). If you want to make a complaint or assert a legal right, check the current route for your country, state, or province and the specific provider.
