Stop interacting with the site. If the command ran, disconnect the device from the internet, scan it with updated security software, and change important passwords from a different trusted device. Enable two-factor authentication, and get help from a support channel you already trust if malware is found, symptoms continue, or you are unsure how to clean the device.
Do these things first
Treat a command copied from a webpage as potentially unsafe, especially if the page told you to open Windows Run, PowerShell, Command Prompt, Terminal, or another command interface. Real CAPTCHAs do not require commands. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says fake CAPTCHA pages can persuade people to paste commands that install malware or steal email and banking credentials.

- Stop following the page. Do not paste another command, press Enter again, revisit the page for instructions, or call a phone number shown in a pop-up.
- Contain a command that executed. Disconnect the computer from Wi-Fi and wired networks. This limits communication with an attacker and reduces the chance that the device will be used to access online accounts.
- Stop sensitive logins on that computer. Do not sign in to email, banking, shopping, password-management, or work accounts on the suspected device while you assess it.
- Run an updated security scan. Update the security software already installed on the device, then perform a full scan. A clean result is useful but does not prove that no malware exists; the FTC cautions that malicious software can temporarily evade detection.
- Use another trusted device for account recovery. Change passwords for accounts that may have been exposed and turn on two-factor authentication. Start with your primary email and financial accounts because control of either can lead to other accounts or money.
- Get independent technical help when necessary. Contact the device maker, a support company you already know, or a technically knowledgeable person. Do not grant remote access to an unsolicited caller or to a number supplied by a scare message.
- Report the incident. The FTC accepts reports about malware-spreading websites, advertisements, and messages through ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Do not return to a dangerous page just to collect evidence.
These steps apply when the command actually ran or when you cannot tell whether it ran. The correct response changes if the operating system blocked the paste before execution.

Assume possible compromise if you pasted the text into a shell and confirmed it, a program opened, a download appeared, or the page showed instructions indicating completion. You do not need to identify the command before taking containment and account-protection steps. Preserve any visible alert or command text only if it can be done without reopening the page or interacting with the suspected file.

When macOS blocked the paste
Apple documents several distinct macOS alerts. If the message says Possible malware, Paste blocked, Apple says the Mac has not been harmed. Do not paste the command unless you are certain what it does and why the source is trustworthy.
If the message says Malware Detected, Paste Blocked or Malicious Script Blocked, Apple says macOS detected known malware and blocked it. Do not paste or run the script. Those statements apply to the named alerts; they do not certify that every Mac showing a different message is clean.
When Windows shows a PowerShell web-content warning
Microsoft describes a separate protection in Windows PowerShell 5.1. After supported Windows updates released on or after December 9, 2025, Invoke-WebRequest can display a confirmation prompt when used without special parameters because full page parsing may execute scripts. Microsoft recommends -UseBasicParsing for retrieval that does not need that parsing.

This warning concerns that command’s page-parsing behavior. Approving it does not make other text copied from a website safe, and seeing the warning does not establish that a different command was blocked. The Microsoft article was updated December 20, 2025.
Why a website command can be dangerous
A browser page normally asks you to click, type, or solve a visual challenge. It should not require opening a command window and pasting text. In the fake-CAPTCHA pattern described by the FTC, a page imitates human verification, instructs the visitor to use shortcuts such as Windows + R and Ctrl + V, and then relies on the visitor to press Enter. The command can download or launch malware without looking suspicious on screen.
Apple identifies the same broader technique as social engineering: a website, email, or message persuades someone to paste a malicious command into Terminal. The danger is not that Terminal or PowerShell is inherently unsafe; it is that a command can perform actions with the permissions of your account, including downloading files, changing settings, or sending information to an attacker.

Scammers may target email credentials, mobile-banking logins, saved browser data, or any other information available to the account that ran the command. A fake security warning may then direct you to a supposed support number. The FTC warns that those operators can request remote access and payment for a problem they created or falsely claim exists.

Use a phone, tablet, or computer that you trust and that was not exposed to the command. If you have no suitable device, ask a trusted person or use an appropriately secured public or work device without saving passwords.
- Sign in to your primary email account first. Review recent sign-ins, recovery addresses, forwarding rules, and sent messages. Remove unfamiliar sessions and update the password.
- Change passwords for financial, shopping, cloud-storage, social, and work accounts that were used on the suspected device or reused elsewhere.
- Turn on two-factor authentication wherever it is available. An authenticator app or hardware key is preferable to relying only on text messages when your account offers stronger choices.
- Contact banks or payment providers through the number on a card or an official statement if you see unauthorized activity. Never use contact details from the pop-up.
- Tell contacts if your email or messaging account sent messages you did not write. This reduces the chance that they will trust a follow-up scam.
Changing passwords on the potentially infected computer can expose the new credentials as well, which is why the FTC specifically recommends another device for the fake-CAPTCHA situation.

Scan, observe, and decide when you need help
Install updates for the security software already available on the device, then run its fullest practical scan. Follow the software’s quarantine or removal instructions and restart if it requests one. Keep the device disconnected while you complete the initial assessment unless the security software requires a connection to update or obtain a definition; in that case, update through a trusted process and disconnect again before handling accounts.
A scan is an important check, not a guarantee. The FTC’s malware guidance notes that malicious software can go undetected for a time. If the scan finds something, if the device behaves abnormally, or if you cannot interpret the result, use the device maker’s support channel or another service you independently trust. Do not accept unsolicited remote-support offers.
Warning signs to watch for
None of these symptoms proves that malware is present, and malware may show no obvious symptoms. Together with a suspicious command, however, they justify professional assistance and closer account monitoring.
Best Value
- The computer becomes unusually slow, freezes, crashes, or takes much longer to start.
- Your browser redirects to unexpected pages or its home page changes without your approval.
- New extensions, toolbars, applications, or shortcuts appear.
- Pop-ups or security warnings appear outside the normal behavior of your security software.
- The operating system repeatedly reports errors.
- Task Manager, Activity Monitor, security settings, or other system tools are disabled or will not open.
- Messages, posts, or emails are sent from your accounts without your knowledge.
Continue watching your important accounts for unfamiliar sign-ins, password-reset notices, new forwarding rules, or transactions. Account monitoring is necessary even if the computer later appears normal.
Personal computers and managed devices need different escalation
Personal device
The containment, scan, account-recovery, and trusted-support sequence above is intended for an individual’s computer or phone. Keep records of the date, the website address if already visible in browser history, the exact alert text, and the security software’s result. Do not revisit the page or execute the command again to reproduce the event.
Work, school, or organization-managed device
Contact your organization’s IT or security team immediately and follow its incident-reporting process. Do not assume that consumer cleanup steps are a complete organizational response. The team may need to isolate the device centrally, preserve logs, reset enterprise credentials, or check other affected accounts. Tell them exactly what you pasted, when you ran it, and whether you entered any passwords afterward.
What not to do
- Do not paste a second command that promises to clean or verify the first one.
- Do not disable security software because a webpage says it is required.
- Do not call a number in a browser alert or grant an unexpected caller remote control.
- Do not log in to sensitive services on the suspected device to test whether everything still works.
- Do not assume that a blocked Apple alert, a PowerShell prompt, or a successful scan has the same meaning as every other security message.
- Do not pay someone who contacts you unexpectedly and claims to have detected the problem.
How to report the scam safely
Use ReportFraud.ftc.gov to report a suspicious website, advertisement, email, or fake CAPTCHA. Include the page’s description, the command’s visible wording if you already recorded it, and the approximate time. Avoid clicking the page again to retrieve details. Your browser history, download history, security-software log, and screenshots of alerts may provide enough information without renewed contact with the site.
If a financial account was involved, report unauthorized activity directly to the institution through its independently verified website or the telephone number printed on your card or statement. For an organization-managed device, report through the internal security process as well as any consumer reporting channel that your employer recommends.
A quick decision guide
| What happened | Immediate interpretation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Command ran and a download, window, or other action followed | Possible compromise | Disconnect, avoid sensitive logins, scan, and recover accounts from another trusted device. |
| You pasted text but macOS displayed "Possible malware, Paste blocked" | Apple says the Mac has not been harmed in this named case | Do not paste; follow the alert’s instruction and keep the command unexecuted. |
| macOS displayed "Malware Detected, Paste Blocked" or "Malicious Script Blocked" | Apple says known malware was detected and blocked | Do not paste or run the script; obtain help if any other symptoms or concerns remain. |
PowerShell 5.1 asked for confirmation for Invoke-WebRequest |
Windows is warning about possible script execution during page parsing | Understand that prompt specifically; do not treat it as approval for unrelated website commands. |
| You cannot tell whether execution occurred | Uncertainty itself warrants caution | Use the containment and account-protection steps rather than testing the command again. |
Bottom line
A website that asks you to open a command interface and paste text is using a social-engineering tactic, not a normal CAPTCHA. If the command ran, isolate the device, scan it, and secure accounts from somewhere else. If the operating system clearly blocked the paste, follow that platform’s exact alert guidance and do not override it. When symptoms, scan results, or the device’s status remain uncertain, rely on a support channel you chose independently—not the contact information supplied by the scam.
