Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf you miss a turn on a construction detour, keep driving safely and follow the temporary signs and any flagger directions. Don’t brake or swerve suddenly, reverse, cross a median, make an illegal U-turn, or enter a closed work area to get back on route. Stop somewhere safe and legal before checking your map or changing your route; then continue toward your destination by a lawful route.
What to do right after you miss the turn
- Keep control of the vehicle. Continue along the road you are on rather than stopping in a live lane or making a sudden turn or lane change. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), in guidance for commercial motor vehicle drivers, advises: “If you miss a turn or an exit, pass the turn and find a safe way to change direction.” Its guidance warns that a sudden correction can lead to an illegal or unsafe maneuver. Read FMCSA’s unfamiliar-roadway driving tips.
- Follow temporary traffic controls. Obey detour signs, lane markings, cones, barricades and flaggers. Don’t drive around a barricade or through a closed work area to rejoin the route. FMCSA’s GPS guidance for truck and bus drivers says navigation recommendations do not override detour signs and advisories. Read FMCSA’s GPS safety guidance.
- Wait until you are safely stopped to check navigation. Don’t type into a phone or manipulate a navigation system while driving. Pull into a suitable legal parking area or another safe stopping place—not an intersection, travel lane or unsafe shoulder—to review your options.
- Reroute toward your destination. Let navigation recalculate or choose another lawful route. You may be able to rejoin the original route farther ahead; don’t assume retracing the detour is safe or permitted.
Should you follow the detour signs or your GPS?
Follow the posted temporary traffic controls and directions from flaggers. Use GPS as a routing aid, not permission to disregard a sign, barricade or advisory. The Federal Highway Administration’s 11th Edition Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), dated December 2023, says the DETOUR sign “should be used in advance of a road user detour over a different roadway or route.” The manual is a national traffic-control reference; state adoption, supplements and local implementation can vary. See the FHWA MUTCD, including Section 6H.

Construction can change traffic patterns and bring lower speeds, workers and equipment into the roadway. Slow down, stay alert and follow the controls in front of you, even if your navigation app shows a different path. For Oregon-specific work-zone and distracted-driving guidance, see Oregon DOT’s Work Zone Safety page and Distracted Driving page. Oregon’s mobile-device rules are state-specific, not a statement of nationwide law.

- Legal: Does it comply with posted restrictions, traffic controls and the rules where you are driving?
- Safe now: Can you take it without an abrupt maneuver or creating a conflict with traffic, workers or equipment?
- Outside the closure: Does it keep you clear of barricaded or closed work areas?
- Clear to follow: Can you understand and review the route while stopped, rather than handling the device during a difficult work-zone maneuver?
If the route is still unclear, stay parked somewhere appropriate and consult an official transportation-agency closure or delay update. A passenger can help review the route while the vehicle is stopped; avoid drawing the driver into a conversation during a complex maneuver. Work-zone conditions can change, so check current local information where available.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why there is no universal turnaround maneuver
The legal way to change direction depends on local traffic rules, signs and road design. A U-turn, driveway or side road that is legal in one place may be prohibited or unsafe in another. The safe general response is to pass the missed turn and find a lawful place to change direction, not to improvise a maneuver at the detour junction.
