Keep your distance, move people and pets away, and call a local wildlife agency or licensed bird rehabilitator before touching or moving a bird you think is rare or endangered. Watch for distress from a safe distance, do not feed or give water, and follow the professional’s instructions. A bird’s rarity or legal protection cannot be confirmed reliably from a quick look, and an apparently healthy bird may need observation and reporting rather than rescue.
First, make the scene safe without approaching
- Stop at a safe distance. Keep children, dogs, cats and other people away. Do not crowd, chase, photograph at close range, call the bird toward you, or try to make it fly.
- Look for immediate hazards. From where you are, note traffic, windows, power equipment, predators, flooding, extreme heat or cold, and other dangers. If the bird is in immediate danger, tell the wildlife professional exactly what is happening.
- Do not touch a sick or dead bird. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises avoiding contact and contacting a wildlife agency or rehabilitator instead.
- Call before taking action. Contact your state or local wildlife authority or a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. Explain where the bird is, what you observed, whether it can stand or fly, and whether it is near a hazard. Ask whether the facility handles that species and whether you should leave it, move it a short distance, or transport it.
Wildlife professionals often prefer that a finder does nothing beyond protecting the area and making the call. Kit Lacy, a bird curator at Cascades Raptor Center, described the ideal response this way: “In a perfect world, the person who finds an injured bird can call us and do nothing.”

Rare is an observation, not a confirmed legal status
“Rare” may simply mean that a bird is unusual in your yard or region. “Endangered” has a specific legal meaning that depends on the species, jurisdiction and applicable rules. A quick identification from a distance is not enough to establish either status. The sources available for this guide do not provide a reliable process for legally determining the status of an unknown bird, so do not capture it to obtain a better look.

Describe what you can safely see: approximate size, colors and markings, behavior, whether it is feathered, and whether it can stand or fly. Record the date, time and general location for the wildlife authority. For a sensitive sighting, avoid posting an exact location publicly; a sudden crowd can disturb the bird. Ask the local authority how and where a healthy sighting should be reported. There is no single U.S. hotline or universal reporting route for every apparently healthy rare bird.

Use the bird’s condition to choose the next step
| What you observe | What it may mean | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Featherless or eyes closed | Nestling that normally belongs in a nest | Look for a nearby nest without approaching unnecessarily. If you can safely identify it, a professional may advise returning the nestling. If no nest is visible, leave the bird where it is or move it only to nearby shade while seeking advice. |
| Mostly feathered, hopping or fluttering on the ground | Fledgling whose parents may still be feeding it | Keep pets and people away and give the bird space. Do not assume it is abandoned. |
| Bleeding, an apparent broken limb, inability to stand or obvious severe weakness | Possible injury or illness | Call a licensed rehabilitator or wildlife agency immediately. Do not feed, water or treat the bird. Wait for handling instructions. |
| Dead bird | A carcass that may pose health or conservation concerns | Do not touch it. Keep people and pets away and ask the wildlife authority or health agency how to report or handle it. |
| In traffic, trapped, attacked or exposed to another immediate hazard | Urgent danger regardless of species | Call the appropriate local wildlife authority or rehabilitator and describe the hazard. Do not put yourself at risk or attempt to restrain a large bird. |
These are decision points, not a substitute for professional advice. A bird can look unusual without needing rescue, and a bird that appears calm can still be injured.
Young birds: why a bird on the ground may be normal
Nestlings
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) describes a nestling as featherless or having its eyes closed. If a nearby nest is clearly identifiable, returning the nestling may be appropriate, but ask a rehabilitator or wildlife agency first when you are uncertain. If you cannot find the nest, leave the bird in place or move it only a short distance to shade while you seek instructions. Do not build a permanent replacement nest or take the bird indoors on your own.
Fledglings
A fledgling is more fully feathered and may hop or flutter rather than fly strongly. Parents commonly remain nearby and continue feeding fledglings on the ground. Audubon recommends keeping pets away and giving the family space. Watching from inside a building or from a distant location is less disruptive than standing over the bird.

Jennifer Jill Rockwell, director of the Ruth Melichar Bird Center, notes that people can send pictures from a cell phone and answer questions about whether parents are present. She says a makeshift nest may sometimes keep a baby with its family. Send images only from a safe distance and only if the professional requests them; do not delay a call while trying to document every detail.
How to contact the right help
- Start locally. Search for your state wildlife agency or a licensed wildlife rehabilitator serving the place where the bird is located. A national or out-of-area organization may not be permitted to accept the species.
- Call before transport. Confirm that the facility handles birds and ask whether it has space, species expertise and current instructions. Do not arrive unannounced with a wild bird.
- Give a concise report. State the general location, time found, visible condition, age clues (nestling or fledgling), immediate hazards and your distance from the bird. Say whether a cat, dog, vehicle or window was involved.
- Follow the requested option. The professional may tell you to leave the bird alone, move it a short distance out of danger, place it in temporary containment, or transport it. Ask the professional to repeat any handling directions you are unsure about.
USFWS provides a bird-rehabilitator map, and Audubon identifies Animal Help Now as another locator. Availability and coverage can change, so verify that the listed facility is licensed and currently accepting the species before you travel.
If a professional directs temporary containment
Do not contain a bird merely because it is rare, attractive or easy to catch. Larger birds, raptors and birds with strong bills or talons can seriously injure a finder. Consult the rehabilitator before attempting any capture.

If a professional specifically directs temporary containment of a small, obviously injured bird, Audubon describes using a ventilated cardboard box or paper bag. Handle the bird as little as possible, keep the container closed, quiet and away from children and pets, and transport it only as instructed. Do not add food, water, medication, heating devices or loose fabric unless the professional tells you to do so. A box is a short-term transport measure, not a home or a rehabilitation setup.
If the bird is large, defensive, tangled, trapped in a dangerous place or difficult to approach, stop and wait for trained help. Your safety and the bird’s safety take priority over a faster capture.
Food, water and home treatment can make things worse
- Do not feed. The wrong food can cause aspiration, digestive injury or nutritional harm, and feeding can interfere with professional assessment.
- Do not give water. Pouring water into a bird’s beak can cause it to inhale the liquid.
- Do not treat wounds. Household disinfectants, ointments and human medicines are not appropriate substitutes for avian care.
- Do not keep the bird. A wild bird that seems tame still needs qualified evaluation, and keeping it can violate federal or state requirements.
What U.S. law allows—and what it does not
The legal information here is U.S.-specific, particularly for migratory birds covered by federal rules. USFWS says rehabilitation of covered migratory birds requires a federal migratory bird rehabilitation permit. A limited Good Samaritan provision allows possession of a sick, injured or orphaned covered migratory bird for immediate transport to a permitted rehabilitator. It does not authorize general capture, long-term possession, private rehabilitation or keeping a bird while deciding what to do.

State requirements can be more restrictive than federal requirements. A person who finds a bird should therefore call the relevant state wildlife agency or permitted rehabilitator before moving it, even when the intention is to help. Rules in other countries are not established by the U.S. guidance described here; readers elsewhere should contact their own local wildlife authority.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why keeping pets away matters
Domestic cats kill an estimated 1.3 billion to 4 billion birds each year in the contiguous United States, according to a Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute study cited by USFWS in 2023. That figure is broad background context, not a measure of what will happen to the particular bird in front of you and not evidence that handling it yourself improves its odds. The immediate practical step is to remove cats and dogs from the area and keep them indoors until a professional advises otherwise.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen you are not sure what you saw
“I think I’ve spotted a rare bird in my yard.”
Stay back and observe briefly. Note the bird’s appearance and behavior, but do not pursue it for a closer view. If it is healthy and mobile, ask the local wildlife authority how to report the sighting and whether the location should remain private. If it is injured, sick, trapped or exposed to danger, call a licensed rehabilitator or wildlife agency promptly.

“Should I contact somebody even if I’m not sure?”
Yes when there are signs of distress, a dead parent, an immediate hazard or uncertainty about a young bird’s condition. A short phone call or requested photo can prevent an unnecessary rescue. If the bird is simply unusual but appears healthy, report what you observed through the local authority’s preferred channel rather than attempting to capture it for identification.
A simple checklist before you leave the scene
- People and pets are at a safe distance.
- You have not touched, fed, watered or treated the bird.
- You noted visible distress, age clues and immediate hazards.
- You called a local wildlife agency or licensed, species-appropriate rehabilitator.
- You know whether to leave the bird, move it out of danger, contain it briefly or transport it.
- You will not keep the bird or publish a sensitive exact location without professional guidance.
For most encounters, the best help is quiet protection of the area and a prompt call. Intervention should happen only when a qualified professional determines that it is necessary and tells you how to do it.
