Dyson PencilWash vs. WashG1: Which Wet Floor Cleaner Is Right for You?

Choose the Dyson PencilWash if a slim, lighter cleaner and a lower displayed price matter most, and its maker-stated coverage suits the area you clean. Choose the Dyson WashG1 if you have more hard flooring to cover and prefer its dual-roller system, larger tanks and longer stated runtime. Dyson’s specifications are not independent head-to-head test results, so they cannot establish which cleaner removes stains better or leaves floors drier.

Dyson PencilWash vs. WashG1 at a glance

The two machines are wet cleaners for hard floors, but they differ in weight, tank capacity, cleaning design and the coverage Dyson claims. The figures below are manufacturer specifications, not results from a directly comparable independent test. Prices are the US listings displayed on October 12, 2026, rather than guaranteed current prices.

Which cleaner fits your home?

Choose PencilWash for a lighter, slimmer machine

At 4.9 lb full-machine weight, the PencilWash is substantially lighter than the WashG1’s 10.8 lb. That difference may matter if you need to carry the cleaner between floors, lift it into storage or steer it around a smaller room. Dyson describes the PencilWash as 1.5 inches in diameter and says it can lie flat to reach beneath low furniture.

#1 Best Overall
Dyson PencilWashᵀᴹ Cordless Wet Cleaner for Hard Floors - Ultra Slim and maneuverable, Cleans Wet and Dry Messes, 30 Minutes Run time
  • EASY TO MANEUVER - The ultra-slim, lightweight handle is just 1.5 inches in diameter and 0.8 lbs in hand for ergonomic steering.
  • WASH AWAY SPILLS, STAINS AND DEBRIS - The 64,000-filament microfiber roller powerfully washes away wet spills and stains, while removing debris and dirt on hard floors. Switch to MAX mode for spot cleaning and dried on stains. Unlike your mop, dirty water and debris is scraped away with each rotation so you don't use dirty water to clean.
  • CONTINUOUS HYGIENIC CLEANING - Dirty water and debris are extracted from the roller on every rotation, while 8 hydration points ensure the floor is always washed with clean water.
  • GOOD FOR SMALL TO MEDIUM SIZED ROOMS Covers up to 1076 sqft.² A 300ml clean water tank stored in the cleaner head for optimum balance and less weight in hand.
  • SELF-PROPELLED - A powerful motor rotates the roller to deliver self-propelled motion – gliding through wet and dry mess with ease.

Its published coverage is the smaller of the two: Dyson gives 1,076 sq ft, based on a simulation in low-hydration mode using one clean-water tank. That is a maker-reported figure, not a promise that every home can be cleaned over that area in a single session. Floor type and cleaning habits affect real coverage.

The US price displayed on Dyson’s PencilWash product page was $349.99 on October 12, 2026. That was $420 less than the WashG1’s displayed price on the same date, but prices can change.

Dyson gives two slightly different figures for the PencilWash’s in-hand weight: 0.8 lb in its launch announcement and 0.84 lb on the product page. Those numbers describe a different measure from the 4.9 lb full-machine weight, so they should not be substituted for it in a direct comparison with WashG1. If portability is a priority, compare the full-machine figures and consider where you will carry and store the complete unit.

The slim profile is a practical reason to consider PencilWash if your cleaning route includes low furniture or tight spaces. Dyson says it is 1.5 inches in diameter and lies flat, but that description does not guarantee it will fit beneath every sofa or cabinet. Check the clearance of your own furniture rather than assuming the listed design will reach everywhere.

Choose WashG1 for more stated coverage and a separate debris tray

Dyson lists up to 3,000 sq ft of coverage and up to 35 minutes of runtime for the WashG1. The coverage figure comes from Dyson’s calculation at a specified walking speed without repeated cleaning; Dyson notes that actual area varies. It is not directly comparable to the PencilWash simulation as though both figures came from the same test.

The WashG1’s two motorized, counter-rotating microfiber rollers work with selectable hydration levels and a MAX setting. A debris tray separates solid dirt from dirty water. Dyson says this design is intended to collect both solid debris and liquid; the specification alone does not show how the two models perform against one another on a particular spill or stain.

Its tanks are larger by listed capacity: 0.26 gal for clean water and 0.21 gal for dirty water, compared with PencilWash’s 10 fl oz and 12 fl oz. In US customary units, those WashG1 capacities are about 33 and 27 fluid ounces, respectively. The displayed US price was $769.99 on October 12, 2026. That higher price and the greater full-machine weight are trade-offs for buyers attracted to the WashG1’s stated coverage and design.

The WashG1’s larger listed tanks and coverage claim may be relevant if you expect to clean a broad area, but they do not establish how often you will need to refill or empty it in your own home. Actual use depends on the floor and cleaning habits, and Dyson does not provide a directly comparable home-by-home refill result for both models. Treat the capacities as specifications to compare, not a guarantee of uninterrupted cleaning.

Choose neither as your only floor-care machine if you need carpet vacuuming

Dyson identifies the PencilWash for tiles, vinyl, laminate and sealed wood. It describes the WashG1 as a hard-floor cleaner and says it does not work on carpets. Its product FAQ also says a separate vacuum is needed for carpets, upholstery, mattresses, pet beds, countertops and cars. Neither machine should be treated as a whole-home vacuum replacement.

This distinction matters if you are replacing an existing vacuum rather than adding a hard-floor cleaner. WashG1’s ability to handle liquid and solid debris does not make it a carpet vacuum; Dyson explicitly says carpet cleaning requires a separate vacuum. The PencilWash is likewise presented as a wet hard-floor cleaner, not an all-surface vacuum.

How their cleaning systems differ

PencilWash: a slim roller-based wet cleaner

Dyson describes the PencilWash as applying fresh water through a slim roller system and keeping lifted dirt and debris contained at the base. Dyson says only clean water touches the floor. Its small-diameter form and ability to lie flat are the distinguishing practical points in the published description; the available specifications do not establish that it cleans more effectively or dries a floor faster than the WashG1.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a buyer, the useful question is whether that slim format matches the spaces and floor types you need to clean. Dyson lists tiles, vinyl, laminate and sealed wood as suitable surfaces. If your floors are outside those listed categories, confirm the manufacturer’s guidance for your specific flooring before purchasing; the listed types do not justify assuming compatibility with every surface or finish.

WashG1: two counter-rotating rollers and adjustable hydration

The WashG1 uses two motorized microfiber rollers that rotate in opposite directions. Owners can select hydration levels and a MAX setting, while the debris tray separates solid dirt from the dirty water. The approach gives users controls over water delivery and separates solids from liquid, but it also comes with an explicit care routine described below.

Dyson’s Vice President of Engineering, Charlie Park, said in the company’s May 13, 2024 WashG1 announcement: “Stain removal performance is dependent on the correlation of hydration of the floor and agitation applied. We’ve engineered our machine to allow owners full control, enabling them to deep clean their homes effectively.” This explains the manufacturer’s rationale for adjustable hydration and agitation; it is not independent proof of comparative stain removal.

The different designs may help shoppers narrow a choice, but neither design description alone answers which unit is better for a specific mess. No directly comparable independent result is provided here for stain removal, pickup, drying time or overall cleaning performance. If a particular performance outcome is decisive, look for an independent test that evaluates both models under the same conditions rather than treating a feature list as a test result.

What the coverage and runtime figures can—and cannot—tell you

Dyson advertises up to 30 minutes and 1,076 sq ft for PencilWash, and up to 35 minutes and 3,000 sq ft for WashG1. The runtime figures are stated maximums; actual use can vary. The larger WashG1 coverage number suggests it is positioned for larger hard-floor areas, but the underlying methods differ: PencilWash coverage is simulated in low-hydration mode from one tank, while WashG1 coverage is calculated at a specified walking speed without repeated passes.

Use the figures as manufacturer guidance, not as a guarantee of how much of your home you can clean before refilling or recharging. Room layout, floor type and how you clean all affect the result. The available official information does not provide an independently measured, directly comparable result for cleaning time, stain removal, drying or debris pickup.

In particular, the 3,000-square-foot WashG1 claim is not evidence that it will cover almost three times as much floor as the PencilWash in every household. The PencilWash figure is tied to a low-hydration simulation from one tank, while the WashG1 figure uses a different calculation. The numbers are useful as Dyson’s positioning and guidance, but their different qualifications prevent a like-for-like performance conclusion.

The runtime gap is five minutes on paper: up to 35 minutes for WashG1 against up to 30 for PencilWash. That is a modest difference compared with the stated coverage gap, and neither maximum guarantees the time a buyer will get in everyday cleaning. For a practical decision, consider both the size of your hard-floor area and whether you would rather prioritize the lighter unit or the larger machine’s stated run and coverage figures.

Price, ownership and buying checks

At the displayed prices on October 12, 2026, PencilWash cost $349.99 and WashG1 cost $769.99, a $420 difference. The lower listed price is one clear reason to consider PencilWash, while WashG1 asks for a higher initial outlay. These are dated US page prices, not a promise that either product will remain at that price or be available in every market.

Availability signals were not consistent. Both product pages showed out-of-stock notification messaging in search results, while a WashG1 variant page also appeared in stock. That discrepancy does not confirm that a particular model or color is available now. Check the live product listing and the exact variant at checkout, and confirm the final price before ordering.

If you shop through another retailer, verify the exact model and current stock there as well. No marketplace inventory or affiliate eligibility was confirmed. For replacement parts, use Dyson’s official catalog to check compatibility rather than assuming a roller, tank or other item listed for one model fits the other.

A useful pre-purchase check is to match the machine to the floors you actually have, then weigh its size against the area you expect to clean. Check whether a carpet vacuum is still needed, whether the full-machine weight works for carrying and storage, and whether the stated coverage and runtime claims fit your expectations. Finally, review current price, stock and parts listings; all can change.

Care, consumables and availability

WashG1 maintenance

Dyson recommends running the WashG1’s self-clean function after use and manually cleaning it after every three uses, according to its US product FAQ. The rollers are expected to last around 25 hours depending on use, according to Dyson’s owner support page. That is an estimated service life, not a fixed replacement interval for every household.

Dyson’s WashG1 parts catalog lists compatible replacement rollers, brush bars, tanks, a debris tray, a battery and a dock. Parts availability and prices can change; check the catalog for current listings and compatibility before ordering.

The maintenance guidance is worth including in the ownership comparison: the WashG1 has a dock-based self-clean cycle, but Dyson also calls for manual cleaning after every three uses. A self-clean function therefore should not be mistaken for having no regular care tasks. The roughly 25-hour roller life is also conditional on use, so it is an estimate rather than a calendar-based schedule.

These documented care details apply to WashG1. The available product information does not establish an equivalent PencilWash maintenance interval or roller replacement lifespan, so it would be misleading to compare consumable costs or upkeep frequency between the two without verified figures. For either model, consult its current owner instructions for the correct care routine.

Dyson Clean+Wash Hygiene Wet and Dry Cleaner for Hard Floors - Cordless, 70 Minutes Run time, lays Flat, Anti-Tangle, self-Cleaning Roller, Drying Dock
  • CLEANS WET & DRY MESSES HYGIENICALLY - Washes spills and stains on hard floor. Waste stays in the cleaner head, not the machine, so no contamination or bad smells. Unlike your mop, cleans both dry debris and wet dirt with only clean water.
  • LIFTS DUST AND DEBRIS LIKE A VACUUM² - Our powerful motor drives a roller with densely packed filaments that grab and lift dry debris and hair from hard floors, even when wet. The Anti-tangle comb behind the roller helps avoid hair tangling.
  • POWERFUL WET CLEAN WITH A FAST DRY AND STREAK-FREE FINISH - Our most absorbent microfiber roller prevents water stains and streaking with 84,000 densely-packed filaments. Leaves less than 1g/m² of water, so floors dry within 60 seconds.
  • UP TO 70 MINUTES RUN TIME¹ - Dyson's longest run time allows for up to 3,770 sqft of coverage.⁴
  • CONTINUOUS HYGIENIC CLEANING - A new hygienic waste system means no dirt is drawn upwards through the machine. Unlike a mop, dirty water and debris are scraped from the roller before it’s hydrated with clean water, so it always washes with clean water.

Bottom line: which is better for you?

The PencilWash is the more compelling fit if low full-machine weight, a slim design and a lower displayed price outweigh the need for broader stated coverage. The WashG1 is the stronger on-paper fit for larger hard-floor areas if you value its dual counter-rotating rollers, debris tray, larger tanks and longer stated runtime—and can accept a heavier, more expensive machine. Neither has an established independent head-to-head advantage for stain removal or floor-drying speed, so treat Dyson’s figures as specifications rather than proof of superior cleaning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is better, Dyson PencilWash or WashG1?

It depends on what matters most. PencilWash is lighter, slimmer and was less expensive at the displayed US prices on October 12, 2026. WashG1 has larger listed tanks, a longer stated runtime and a much higher maker-stated coverage figure. Those coverage claims use different methods, and there is no directly comparable independent head-to-head test here proving one cleans better.

Can either Dyson wet cleaner clean carpets?

WashG1 is engineered for hard floors and Dyson says it does not work on carpets. Dyson’s FAQ says a separate vacuum is needed for carpets and also lists upholstery, mattresses, pet beds, countertops and cars as tasks requiring a vacuum. PencilWash is also presented as a wet hard-floor cleaner, not a whole-home vacuum replacement.

How much lighter is the PencilWash than the WashG1?

Dyson lists full-machine weights of 4.9 lb for PencilWash and 10.8 lb for WashG1, a difference of 5.9 lb. Dyson separately gives PencilWash in-hand weights of 0.8 lb in its launch announcement and 0.84 lb on its product page; those are different measures from full-machine weight.

How large an area can each cleaner cover on one charge or tank?

Dyson lists up to 1,076 sq ft for PencilWash and up to 3,000 sq ft for WashG1, but the figures are not based on the same method. PencilWash coverage is simulated in low-hydration mode from one clean-water tank. WashG1 coverage is Dyson’s calculation at a specified walking speed without repeated cleaning. Actual coverage varies, so neither number guarantees the area you will clean in your home.

What maintenance does the WashG1 require?

Dyson recommends using the self-clean function after use and manually cleaning the WashG1 after every three uses. Its support page says the rollers last around 25 hours depending on use. Dyson’s parts catalog lists replacement rollers and other parts, but availability and prices can change.

What were the listed US prices?

Dyson’s US pages displayed $349.99 for PencilWash and $769.99 for WashG1 on October 12, 2026. Prices and stock can change. Product-page stock messaging was inconsistent, so check the exact model or variant at checkout.

The Bottom Line

Choose PencilWash for a lighter, slimmer hard-floor cleaner and lower displayed price; choose WashG1 if its dual rollers, larger tanks and higher maker-stated coverage are worth the extra weight and cost. Dyson’s coverage methods differ, and neither product has an established independent head-to-head advantage for stain removal or drying speed.
