Report it to your workplace IT or security team now, even if you only clicked the link. Tell them whether you entered information, downloaded or opened a file, or installed anything. Those details determine the response; don’t investigate the link yourself or install tools on an employer-managed device.
What to do immediately
- Contact your IT or security team through your normal reporting channel. Follow your employer’s incident-reporting procedure. If you cannot find it quickly, use an established IT help desk or security contact.
- Describe exactly what happened. Say when you clicked, what device and work account were involved, and whether you entered a password or other information, downloaded or opened a file, or installed software. Be clear about what you did not do, too.
- Follow the response team’s instructions. Don’t delete the message, forward it broadly, revisit the link, or run cleanup tools unless instructed. Responders may need the message and device details to understand what happened.
Prompt reporting gives the organization information it can use to investigate and contain a possible incident. The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) explicitly encourages organizations to make it possible for users to report phishing even after clicking: NCSC guidance on phishing.

What happened after the click?
You clicked, but entered nothing and downloaded or installed nothing
A click alone does not establish that an account or device was compromised. The NCSC says further action is unlikely to be needed when someone clicked a suspicious link but did not enter information or follow instructions to download or install anything; it advises watching for suspicious account activity. Because this happened at work, report it anyway and follow your employer’s process. NCSC guidance on what to do after a suspicious email.
You entered a work password or other information
Tell IT or security what you submitted and which account it belongs to. U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) small-business guidance recommends changing a compromised password immediately. For a work account, coordinate the reset and any sign-out or account-protection steps with your organization rather than assuming a password change alone resolves the incident. If you reused that password on personal or other accounts, change it on those accounts as well; the NCSC recommends changing reused passwords after a suspected compromise. You downloaded or opened a file, or installed software
Tell responders what was downloaded or opened, whether you ran it, and whether you installed anything. Don’t try to remove it or install antivirus software on a managed device unless IT directs you to. The FTC advises disconnecting a device from the network if it is infected with malware; let your organization’s responders tell you whether and how to disconnect a work device. The NCSC also advises running antivirus software after opening a suspicious link or following instructions to install software, but on an employer-managed device that advice is not a substitute for workplace incident handling. If personal information may have been exposed
Tell IT or security what personal information may have been submitted and whose information it was. FTC guidance says affected people should be notified when personal information was compromised. Whether an organization must notify individuals or authorities depends on the facts and applicable law; the guidance cited here does not establish one notification rule for every incident.
