The safest way to save for a game console is to pick the model you actually want, set a realistic target from its current local price, and save toward it in a budget that keeps bills and essentials covered. If the monthly amount is too high, adjust the purchase date or console choice rather than relying on costly payments or cutting necessities.
Set a realistic console target
Start with the games you want to play and the features you need, then choose a platform and configuration. Compare storage, whether you need a disc drive, what is included, and the cost of buying the console at checkout. A cheaper edition may not be the better fit if it lacks a feature you will use.

Prices vary by country, edition, retailer, and date. For context, Sony announced U.S. recommended retail prices effective April 2, 2026 of $649.99 for PS5, $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition, and $899.99 for PS5 Pro. Its announcement listed £569.99, £519.99, and £789.99 in the U.K.; €649.99, €599.99, and €899.99 in Europe; and ¥97,980, ¥89,980, and ¥137,980 in Japan, respectively. Microsoft announced Xbox console price increases effective August 1, 2026: US$100 for 512 GB models and US$150 for 1 TB models. The company also said Xbox Certified Refurbished consoles were available through Microsoft Store for up to US$100 off MSRP, with availability and payment options subject to region and eligibility. Treat that as an offer to verify, not a guaranteed discount. Xbox Wire’s announcement provides the terms.

Before setting your savings goal, check the current local listing and the full checkout amount. Include required taxes or delivery charges if they apply. Keep the console target separate from optional games, controllers, subscriptions, and other accessories; add those only if you intend to buy them at the same time.
Calculate a monthly savings target
Use this planning formula:
(Current target price − money already set aside) ÷ months until purchase = planned monthly contribution.

For example, if the console target is $600, you already have $120 saved, and you want to buy in 8 months, the remaining $480 divided by 8 gives a planned contribution of $60 per month. This is an illustration of the formula, not a recommended amount; your target, existing savings, and timeline will differ.
Then check whether that contribution fits your real budget. Consumer.gov’s budgeting guidance recommends listing income, bills, and other expenses; subtracting expenses from income; tracking actual spending; and reviewing the plan monthly. Treat the console contribution as a planned expense, and revise it if your actual spending shows the amount is not affordable.

Make the plan work without squeezing essentials
If the planned contribution would leave too little for bills or other necessities, do not force the deadline. Choose one or more adjustments:
- Extend the timeline. More months reduce the amount needed each month.
- Compare a less expensive configuration. Make sure it still supports the games and features you care about.
- Consider used or refurbished. Compare condition, included items, return coverage, and total checkout price—not just the listing price.
- Keep optional purchases out of the first target. Add a game or accessory later if buying it now would make the plan unworkable.
Consumer.gov notes that savings can help with emergencies as well as larger purchases. A console goal should not require you to drain money you need for essentials or unexpected costs.

Compare new, used, and refurbished carefully
A used console may cost less upfront, but marketplace prices change and depend on the model, condition, storage, and what is included. Swappa’s guide, updated September 24, 2026, reported these U.S. September 2026 examples:

Swappa said its listed examples were roughly 20–57% below new prices. These are marketplace-reported figures for September 2026, not guaranteed offers or a forecast of what you will pay. For any used or refurbished option, compare the exact edition and storage, inspect the condition description, confirm which controllers or cables are included, and read the return terms before paying. A lower price may not be a good value if the listing omits items you need or offers inadequate recourse if the console does not work as described.

Installments, buy-now-pay-later services, and rent-to-own arrangements can make a purchase appear more manageable by splitting payments, but the total cost and risks vary. The Federal Trade Commission advises checking interest and fees, the consequences of late or missed payments, return terms, and the written contract. BNPL may involve fees and overdraft risks; longer rent-to-own terms can reduce each payment while increasing the total paid.
Before agreeing, add up every payment plus fees and interest, then compare that total with saving and paying the full price.
