What to Do If You Ate Recalled Blueberries

If you ate blueberries that may be recalled, verify the exact package and lot, stop eating it, discard or return it, clean contacted surfaces, and watch for symptoms.

If you ate blueberries that match a recall, stop eating them, discard them or return them as the notice directs, and clean any surfaces or utensils they touched. If you develop symptoms that could be an E. coli infection, contact a healthcare provider immediately. Eating recalled berries does not mean you will become ill.

First, check whether your package is included

Not every blueberry product is recalled. Compare the brand, product name, package size, UPC, printed lot code and date with the FDA’s October 2, 2026 recall expansion and earlier recall information. The October notice says the following products were added:

Use the notices to verify the exact package rather than assuming a product is recalled based on brand alone. Check your freezer, too: some listed best-by dates extend into 2028.

The FDA and CDC declared the outbreak investigation complete on September 21, 2026, but FDA published the additional recall expansion on October 2. Closure of an investigation does not cancel a recall or make remaining recalled food safe.

What to do with berries you already ate

  1. Stop eating any product that matches a recall. Do not taste it to see whether it seems contaminated.
  2. Discard it or return it for a refund as directed in the product-specific notice. FDA says not to give recalled food to another person, a food bank or a pet.
  3. Clean anything the berries or packaging touched. Wash refrigerator walls and shelves, cutting boards, countertops and utensils. FDA’s general recall guidance recommends sanitizing with one tablespoon of chlorine bleach in one gallon of hot water; dry with a clean cloth or unused paper towel. Wash your hands with warm water and soap afterward. Follow the directions as stated and do not combine cleaning chemicals.
  4. Pay attention to how you feel. If symptoms resembling an E. coli infection occur after eating recalled berries, contact a healthcare provider immediately.

Symptoms to watch for—and when they may start

FDA says symptoms from this outbreak may begin a few days after eating contaminated food or as late as nine days afterward. Its outbreak page lists severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea and/or vomiting. CDC says typical symptoms of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea that is often bloody, and vomiting; they usually start three to four days after swallowing the bacteria. These descriptions give different timing ranges, not a guarantee about when symptoms will begin.

Some E. coli infections can cause severe bloody diarrhea and hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a serious kidney complication that can be life-threatening. FDA also notes possible high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease and neurologic problems; CDC says people with HUS may need hospitalization. Exposure alone does not establish that you are infected, but concerning symptoms call for prompt medical advice.

The FDA’s September 21, 2026 outbreak page advises: “Consult your health care provider immediately if you ate recalled frozen berry products and have any symptoms that resemble an E. coli infection.” The CDC’s notice, updated and reviewed the same day, states: “Data showed that frozen blueberries made people in this outbreak sick.” That finding refers to this investigated outbreak, not to blueberries generally.

What the outbreak numbers mean

In its September 21, 2026 closeout, FDA and CDC reported 17 illnesses in two states, six hospitalizations and no deaths. Among the 13 interviewed cases, 11 (85%) reported eating frozen blueberries. FDA reported illness-onset dates from May 11 through August 2, 2026. These are investigation totals, not an estimate of your personal chance of becoming ill after eating a recalled product. FDA says the investigation is complete; use its later October 2 notice for the newest recalled lots.
