Find out which Windows 11 requirement your PC fails before changing settings, buying parts, or attempting an installation. Run Microsoft PC Health Check or check Windows Update, then address the specific issue: a firmware setting may be fixable, RAM or storage may be upgradeable on some models, but an unsupported processor or other unmet requirement may mean the PC cannot qualify. If it remains ineligible, Microsoft does not support installing Windows 11 on it or guarantee updates.
Find out exactly why the PC is ineligible
On a Windows 10 PC, open Microsoft PC Health Check and select Check now. The eligibility assessment says whether the PC meets Windows 11 requirements and can identify the reason it does not. Windows Update also checks eligibility. These consumer checks are intended for personal PCs; if your device is managed by an employer or school, ask its IT administrator about upgrade eligibility and options.

Do not assume that one warning tells the whole story. A PC must meet all applicable minimum requirements, so fixing one failed item does not make it eligible if another still fails.

Check the requirement behind the warning
Microsoft’s published minimum requirements include the following technical thresholds. The processor must also be on Microsoft’s approved CPU list; meeting the clock-speed and core-count figures alone is not enough.

There are also setup conditions beyond hardware eligibility: Windows 11 Home and personal-use Pro require an internet connection and a Microsoft account during initial setup.
Try safe fixes for TPM or Secure Boot warnings
Check whether TPM 2.0 is present and enabled
Open Windows Security > Device security > Security processor details. If there is no Security processor entry, the PC may lack the required TPM hardware, or TPM may be disabled in UEFI firmware. Check your PC manufacturer’s support guidance for your exact model before changing firmware settings; menu names and available options differ between devices.

Check UEFI and Secure Boot configuration
A Secure Boot warning does not always mean the PC lacks Secure Boot support. Microsoft notes that firmware settings can make the feature appear unavailable. Secure Boot works with UEFI, and some PCs configured to boot in Legacy/CSM mode may need a change to UEFI. That change can affect whether the PC boots, so use the manufacturer’s model-specific instructions and do not switch modes without understanding your current configuration.
Decide whether a hardware upgrade can solve it
If the failed requirement is RAM or storage, consult the computer maker’s service documentation to see whether that component is replaceable or upgradeable. Do not buy parts based on the requirement alone: some PCs have fixed components, and the device must meet every other Windows 11 requirement as well.

Processor clock speed and core count are inherent to the processor, not upgradeable settings. The CPU must be on Microsoft’s approved list, so a faster clock or more memory does not make an unapproved processor eligible.
Recheck eligibility after making a change
- After supported hardware changes, run PC Health Check again to reassess the PC.
- If Windows Update still shows the previous result, allow up to 24 hours for its eligibility information to refresh after hardware changes.
- Even when the PC is eligible, an upgrade offer may not appear immediately: Microsoft stages Windows 11 rollout using device factors.
If the PC still does not meet the requirements
Compare the cost and usefulness of keeping the existing PC with replacing it with one that meets Windows 11 requirements. If a central requirement cannot be met safely or economically, replacing the device is one option Microsoft gives for an ineligible PC. Verify the exact model’s eligibility rather than relying on a broad product description.

Standard Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. If you plan to keep using Windows 10, check Microsoft’s current support options for your circumstances; the support end date does not by itself describe every separate option that may be available.

Microsoft says installing Windows 11 on a device that does not meet minimum requirements is not recommended and may cause compatibility issues. Such devices are unsupported, and Microsoft does not guarantee updates, including security updates. Microsoft recommends rolling back to Windows 10 immediately. If the recovery option is available, use Settings > System > Recovery > Go back.
