Sony supports both lens formats across APS-C and full-frame E-mount bodies, but the recorded image area and some camera features can differ. Verify the exact body-and-lens combination in Sony’s compatibility information before relying on autofocus or a particular shooting mode.
1. Confirm the camera and lens mounts
Start with the camera’s exact model number, shown on the body or in its menus, and check its specifications or help guide to confirm it is an E-mount model. Then read the lens model. Sony designs E-mount lenses for E-mount bodies; use with other camera systems is not supported or guaranteed. Sony’s E-mount lens guidance explains this limitation.

Sony A-mount is a separate mount family, so an A-mount lens should not be treated as a direct fit on an E-mount body. If your lens and camera use different mount families, consult Sony’s A-mount and E-mount compatibility information for the exact lens, body, and LA-EA-series adapter combination.
2. Identify the lens format
Within Sony’s E-mount naming convention, FE identifies full-frame lenses, while E identifies APS-C lenses. Sony’s examples include the FE 24-70 mm F2.8 GM (SEL2470GM) and the E 35 mm F1.8 OSS (SEL35F18). These labels describe lens format, not different mount families: both are E-mount lenses.
#1 Best Overall
- Large F1. 8 maximum aperture enables beautiful defocusing effects
- 7-blade circular aperture creates beautiful defocused bokeh
- Compact, lightweight design Ideal for full-frame e-mount cameras
- Aspherical element controls spherical aberration and coma
- Double-gauss configuration suppresses field curvature & distortion
3. Check what happens on your sensor format
| Lens and camera | Compatibility and image area | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FE lens on a full-frame E-mount body | Full-frame coverage is intended. | Consult the body’s compatibility information for autofocus and other functions. |
| FE lens on an APS-C E-mount body | Compatible. The camera crops to the APS-C image area, avoiding dark corners; the field of view is tighter than on full frame at the same focal length. | Consider the tighter framing when choosing a focal length. |
| APS-C E lens on an APS-C E-mount body | Compatible for the APS-C image area. | Check the model-specific function table for feature limits. |
| APS-C E lens on a full-frame E-mount body | Can be used, but recording generally uses an APS-C/Super 35 mm area. Sony says image quality may suffer if that setting is Off. | Confirm the crop setting and whether your intended photo or video mode permits it. |
Sony describes these cross-format behaviors in its APS-C and full-frame E-mount compatibility guide. The camera controls the recording size for an APS-C lens on a full-frame body, and supported settings can vary by shooting configuration.

Physical mounting does not establish that every camera function works identically. Use Sony’s compatibility information for the exact camera and lens to check autofocus and other functions. For a full-frame body with an APS-C lens, also open the body’s help guide and find the APS-C/Super 35 mm or APS-C Size Capture setting. Sony lists different menu paths across camera generations, so a path from another model may not apply.

- Check Sony’s model-specific compatibility table for function restrictions on the precise lens/body pair.
- If the pair crosses A-mount and E-mount, verify the adapter combination rather than assuming any LA-EA-series adapter works.
Quick compatibility check
- Find the exact camera model and verify that it is E-mount.
- Read the lens model and determine whether it is FE (full-frame) or E (APS-C).
- Match lens format to sensor size using the table above; account for the tighter APS-C field of view or full-frame crop recording where applicable.
- Check the camera guide for the relevant crop setting and whether the intended shooting mode supports it.
- Look up autofocus and other feature support for the exact camera-and-lens combination in Sony’s compatibility information.
- For an A-mount lens or body, check Sony’s adapter matrix for the exact combination.
