What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If Windows 11 26H2 is causing trouble, first check whether Microsoft has listed your exact symptom, then install applicable updates and rule out common causes of slow performance. Microsoft has confirmed several specific 26H2 issues, but those reports do not show that a general slowdown affects most PCs. If the problem began after upgrading, you may be able to return to your previous Windows version—usually within 10 days—but back up important files before using recovery options.
First, check whether your symptom is a known 26H2 issue
Microsoft’s Windows 11, version 26H2 known issues and notifications page is the place to check for current reports and their status. Microsoft’s release-health entries were updated through October 2, 2026, and statuses can change, so check the live page before deciding what to do.

Among the listed reports are some applications that need AC-3 (Dolby Digital) decoding closing after updates released September 22, 2026 or later; USB Audio Class 1.0 devices that may fail to start or produce sound; a secure trust relationship issue for domain-joined devices under a specific Machine Identity Isolation configuration; and desktop-loading or black-screen reports, including in virtual desktop environments. Microsoft said a future Windows update was planned to resolve the AC-3 application issue; some other reports were marked mitigated. These are particular symptoms, not evidence of a general slowdown.

In Settings, check System > About for your Windows version and build. Compare the actual symptom—not just the timing—with Microsoft’s current issue list. A problem appearing after an upgrade does not by itself prove the upgrade caused it.

Try low-risk performance checks before recovery
Install applicable Windows updates
Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install applicable updates. If you are troubleshooting a device or driver problem, review optional driver updates there as well; install only drivers relevant to your hardware or symptom. Updates can include fixes and performance improvements, and may address known release issues.
Check common causes of a slow PC
Microsoft’s general performance guidance lists limited storage, too many startup apps, outdated software, and hardware that no longer meets current needs as possible causes of a slow Windows PC. These checks can help whether or not 26H2 is involved:
Rank #2
- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
- Storage: Open Settings > System > Storage to review space use and Storage Sense. Disk Cleanup can also remove temporary files. Avoid deleting files you do not recognize just to free space.
- Startup apps: Open Settings > Apps > Startup and turn off nonessential apps that launch automatically. Leave security and device-management software enabled unless your IT administrator advises otherwise.
- Malware: Run a scan with Windows Security if you suspect unwanted software or the slowdown is unexplained.
- Software and drivers: Update the application or driver associated with the symptom using its trusted update channel. If one app alone is slow, test that app rather than treating the whole Windows installation as faulty.
These are general Windows troubleshooting checks, not a diagnosis that 26H2 caused or did not cause the issue. On older hardware, cleanup alone may not materially improve performance.
Choose a recovery option that matches the problem
Back up important files before recovery. Options differ in what they retain, and your workplace or school may manage recovery settings; on a managed PC, contact IT before changing Windows or removing updates.

| Option | Best fit | What it keeps or removes | Availability and disruption |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reinstall the current Windows version using Windows Update | Windows is running, but system files or components may be damaged | On supported Windows 11 installations, preserves personal files, apps, and settings | Run from Settings; requires internet and power during the process |
| Go back to the previous Windows version | The problem began after the feature upgrade and the prior version was working better | Keeps personal files; removes apps and drivers added after the upgrade and reverses settings changes made since then | In most cases, available for 10 days after upgrading; the option may disappear sooner if required files are removed |
| Uninstall an update in Windows Recovery Environment | Windows will not start properly after an update | Depends on the update and recovery choice; back up files where possible | Available through recovery options; use when Windows cannot be troubleshot normally |
| Reinstall Windows from installation media | Other recovery options are unsuitable and Windows needs reinstalling | Can remove data; effects depend on the reinstall path | More disruptive; Microsoft specifies an empty USB drive of at least 8 GB when creating media on another working PC |
Repair the current installation without changing versions
On supported Windows 11 installations, go to Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. This reinstalls the current Windows version to repair system files and components while preserving files, apps, and settings. Keep the PC connected to the internet and plugged into power until it finishes. If that option is absent, the feature may not be supported or available on the device.
Return to the previous version after the upgrade
If the trouble started with the 26H2 feature upgrade, open Settings > System > Recovery and select Go back if it is available. Microsoft says, “In most cases, you have 10 days to go back.” That is the usual rollback window, not a guarantee the option remains on every device. Personal files are kept, but apps and drivers added after the upgrade are removed, and settings changed since the upgrade are reversed. Back up first, and make sure you have what you need to reinstall affected apps or drivers.

Use recovery options if Windows will not start
If Windows cannot start normally, enter the Windows Recovery Environment and choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall updates where available. Microsoft’s recovery guidance also explains other startup-repair choices. If you need Windows installation media, create it from another working PC on an empty USB drive of at least 8 GB. Reinstalling from that media can remove data, so treat it as a later, more disruptive option and back up files whenever possible.
When not to reset or reinstall
A mild slowdown alone is not a reason to start with Reset this PC or a clean installation. Microsoft’s recovery guidance recommends considering less disruptive options first; reset and reinstall choices can remove apps, settings, or personal files depending on the path selected. Use them only after matching the symptom to a suitable recovery route and understanding its data effects.
What Microsoft’s 26H2 rollout means for your PC
Microsoft announced general availability of Windows 11 26H2 on September 29, 2026. Its rollout is phased for eligible Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 devices, and compatibility concerns can result in safeguard holds. On eligible 24H2 or 25H2 systems, Microsoft describes 26H2 as using an enablement package, which may make the update relatively small and require one restart. None of those rollout characteristics guarantees that an individual device is free of issues.
Microsoft lists support lifecycles of 24 months for Home and Pro, and 36 months for Enterprise and Education. These are edition support durations, not troubleshooting or performance guarantees. Microsoft has not published a prevalence figure establishing how often 26H2 causes general PC slowdowns.
