If the iPhone Duo’s inner folding display layer is scratched, bubbling, or lifting, don’t treat it like an ordinary screen protector: avoid peeling, pressing, cutting, heating, or covering it, and ask Apple or an authorized service provider to assess it. Apple’s hardware engineering vice president has said the cover layer is replaceable, but the available reporting does not establish that owners should remove it themselves.
What the iPhone Duo’s display layer is
Apple describes the inner folding display as a multi-layer structure with a custom-polymer, nano-textured cover layer. Apple says that finish reduces glare and minimizes crease visibility; MacRumors also reports that the layer has a scratch-resistant coating. It is part of the design of the foldable display, not necessarily equivalent to a generic film fitted to a conventional phone screen. MacRumors’ explanation of the iPhone Duo folding screen describes the layers and their intended roles.

The outer display has different protection from the inner foldable display. Advice for a standard flat-screen protector therefore should not automatically be applied to the inner surface.
What to do about a scratch, bubble, or lifted edge
- Leave the layer in place. The reporting confirms that a replacement is possible, but does not say that customers should remove the damaged layer themselves. It also does not validate pressing a bubble flat, trimming a lifted edge, applying heat, or adding another film as safe remedies.
- Identify which display is affected. Tell support whether the change is on the inner folding display or the outer display, and describe what you see: a scratch, bubble, or lifted area. A photo may help communicate the appearance, but it cannot establish whether the issue is limited to the cover layer or involves the display beneath it.
- Contact Apple or an authorized service provider for an assessment. Ask for current guidance and service options for the specific symptom. The available reporting does not provide an official step-by-step procedure for bubbling or lifting.
Can the cover layer be replaced, and what does it cost?
Yes, according to Kate Bergeron, Apple’s vice president of hardware engineering, who said the layer is replaceable. MacRumors quoted her saying: “It’s actually replaceable, which is a really nice thing for the customer that you can peel off that layer and get a new one.” That statement establishes replaceability; it does not, by itself, establish a do-it-yourself removal procedure.

MacRumors reported a $19 service fee for cover-layer replacement with AppleCare+ in the United States in October 2026. It did not report an uncovered price. The $19 figure is not established here for other countries, coverage arrangements, or later dates, so confirm the current amount and eligibility with Apple before arranging service. MacRumors’ report on the replaceable cover layer and reported fee gives those details.
Does a scratch mean the underlying display is damaged?
Not necessarily, but the available sources do not provide a test for distinguishing a mark confined to the cover layer from damage to the foldable display beneath it. A scratch alone—or a photo of a bubble or lifted edge—is not enough to diagnose the panel. Describe the symptom and have a service provider assess the device rather than trying to determine the repair yourself.

Why not install a generic inner-screen protector?
No compatible third-party inner protector or owner-replacement procedure is established in the available reporting. Because the Duo’s inner surface is a purpose-designed cover layer in a multi-layer foldable display, a generic film should not be assumed to fit or to resolve lifting or bubbling. Ask Apple or an authorized service provider what, if anything, is appropriate for the affected device.
