Save evidence, report the content to the site hosting it, and take separate steps to protect your accounts and limit what appears in search. If the post includes a credible threat or someone could reach you, contact local law enforcement and follow local emergency guidance; do not wait for a platform response.
What to do first if someone posts your information online
- Check immediate safety. If the post includes a credible threat, your current location, or details that could help someone reach you, contact local law enforcement and follow local emergency guidance. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security recommends reporting physical-safety threats or criminal harassment to local law enforcement. DHS guidance on reporting suspicious activity.
- Preserve evidence. Save screenshots and, where practical, the post URL, account name, date and time, related messages, and any threats. Keep relevant emails, texts, and voicemails. CISA and DHS recommend documenting incidents and retaining screenshots or messages. Avoid reposting sensitive material to ask for help, since that can spread it further. If the material may be child sexual abuse imagery, do not download or redistribute it; use appropriate official reporting channels. CISA doxxing guidance and DHS reporting guidance.
- Report the content to the site or platform hosting it. Use its reporting or removal process and, where applicable, contact the website administrator. Save any confirmation or case number. The host is the party that can act on material published there.
- Limit further exposure. Tighten social-account privacy settings. If you suspect someone accessed an account, secure it and other accounts that reuse its password. Monitor financial accounts and consider fraud alerts if the exposed information could enable identity misuse. CISA doxxing mitigation advice.
How to get personal information removed from Google
Google has a request process for qualifying doxxing and personal information shown in Search. A successful request affects the search result; it does not remove the information from the original website. Report the material to the host as well, because search-result removal and removal from the publishing site are separate actions. Google: Request to remove personal information from Google Search.

If someone shares your private pictures
For people in the United States, the FTC’s September 2026 consumer guidance describes the Take It Down Act process for nonconsensual intimate images, including digitally altered images and deepfakes. The guidance says covered platforms must provide a way to request removal and remove the image and known identical copies within 48 hours of a request. Start by submitting the request to the platform. This is U.S. guidance for covered platforms, not a guarantee of the same rule or process worldwide. If a covered platform has no working request process or does not remove the material within the stated 48 hours, the FTC directs people to report the platform at TakeItDown.ftc.gov. This is a route for reporting platform noncompliance; it does not itself guarantee that every copy elsewhere will be removed. FTC consumer guidance.

Image-fingerprinting services
- Adults: StopNCII.org is a free service identified by the FTC. It creates a digital fingerprint of an image and shares the fingerprint—not the image—with participating platforms that can scan for matches. StopNCII.org can help limit distribution on participating services, but it cannot guarantee removal from every site.
- Images involving minors: The FTC identifies the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s Take It Down service as an option. NCMEC Take It Down. Do not download or share suspected child sexual abuse imagery to submit it or seek help.
Secure accounts and watch for identity misuse
If you think an account was accessed, change its password and any reused password, enable multifactor authentication where available, and review its privacy settings. A second factor makes unauthorized access harder even if someone has a password; a hardware security key is one optional form for services that support it. It strengthens sign-in but does not remove information already posted. CISA multifactor authentication guidance.
If the exposed details could be used for financial or identity fraud, monitor financial accounts and consider fraud alerts, as CISA advises. The steps for credit freezes, alerts, identity-theft reports, and credit bureaus depend on your country and circumstances; use the relevant official services where you live. CISA doxxing guidance.

Should you report doxxing to the police?
Contact local law enforcement for a credible physical threat or suspected criminal harassment. In the United States, CISA also lists the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) as an option for reporting online crime: IC3. Whether publishing personal information is itself illegal depends on jurisdiction and the conduct involved; a threat, harassment, or related crime may change the situation.
