PC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteChoose an all-in-one desktop by matching its operating system, performance, screen, connections and service options to the work you actually do. Before comparing models, identify the applications you need, your budget and desk space, whether you need another monitor, and any employer or IT requirements. An all-in-one puts the computer and display in one case, which can simplify setup and reduce clutter; that integrated design can also make repairs and upgrades less straightforward.
Start with your workload and required operating system
List the applications you use, how many you run at once, and whether your routine includes video calls, creative work or technical software. Then check the current requirements and compatibility guidance for those applications. If this is a work computer, confirm that your employer supports the operating system and configuration before buying.

Minimum operating-system requirements are a compatibility floor, not a sensible performance target for every workload. Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements include a compatible 64-bit processor with at least two cores, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, UEFI and Secure Boot capability, TPM 2.0, and a 720p display at least 9 inches diagonally. Meeting those minimums does not establish that a computer will feel comfortable for your applications or how long it will suit your needs.

Everyday home and office work
For web browsing, documents and video calls, focus on a screen that is comfortable for your viewing distance, enough memory and storage for your expected workload, a suitable camera and microphone, and ports for devices you already own. Compare the exact configuration rather than assuming that every model in a product family has the same specifications.

- Integrated display: 27" (68.6 cm) diagonal, FHD (1920 x 1080), touch, IPS, three-sided micro-edge, anti-glare, 250nits, 99% sRGB
- Memory: 16 GB LPDDR5-5500 MHz RAM (onboard)
- Internal Storage: 1 TB PCIe NVMe M.2 Solid State Drive
- Mouse and keyboard: HP white wireless keyboard and mouse combo
- Camera: HP True Vision 1080p FHD IR tilt privacy camera with temporal noise reduction and integrated dual array digital microphones
Creative or technical applications
Check the software maker’s current processor, memory, graphics, storage and operating-system requirements first. Choose a configuration that meets the needs of your actual applications and planned workload; there is no single capacity that suits every creative or technical task. Also verify support for any external display you plan to use.
Compare the screen and desk fit
Because the display is built into the computer, its size, resolution, brightness, finish and stand matter every day. Consider your viewing distance, ambient light and whether you can adjust the screen to a comfortable position. Measure the desk and account for the stand, cable routing and space for a keyboard and pointing device.
If you want a second monitor, confirm the exact configuration’s external-display support, including the resolution and refresh rate you need. Do not infer that support from a product name or from another configuration in the same family.

Check memory, storage and upgrade options
Compare installed memory and storage on the specific configuration you intend to buy. Consider the files and applications you expect to keep locally and how your needs may change during the period you plan to own the computer. An integrated design may limit upgrades, so check whether memory or storage can be changed later and whether that work is practical for you.
Match ports and network connections to your devices
Make a list of the peripherals and connections you use: keyboard, mouse, external drives, wired network, headphones, existing monitors and any other equipment. Compare the number and type of USB or Thunderbolt ports, Ethernet, wireless support, audio connections and display outputs on the exact model.
If a connector does not match, determine which adapter or hub is required and verify it supports the device and display you plan to connect. Do not assume an adapter is included. Apple’s Mac adapters for Thunderbolt or USB-C ports guidance illustrates why the connector and intended use should be checked before choosing an adapter.

Use configuration differences as a reason to verify details
Apple’s official 2024 24-inch iMac technical specifications offer a useful example of why the exact configuration matters; they are not a universal recommendation. Both listed configurations have a 24-inch 4.5K Retina display at 4480 × 2520 resolution and 500 nits brightness, a 12 MP Center Stage camera, 16 GB of unified memory and 256 GB of starting SSD storage. But they differ in processor, ports and external-display support:
| 2024 24-inch iMac configuration | Processor | Starting memory and storage | Ports and display support |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two-port | M4 with 8-core CPU | 16 GB unified memory; 256 GB SSD | Two ports; see Apple’s specifications for exact port types and external-display support. |
| Four-port | M4 with 10-core CPU | 16 GB unified memory; 256 GB SSD; build-to-order options up to 32 GB memory and 2 TB SSD | Four ports; external-display support differs from the two-port configuration. See Apple’s specifications for exact details. |
Check Apple’s specifications for the full port and display details, and confirm regional availability and the configuration sold to you. A manufacturer’s camera specification tells you what is listed for that model; it does not establish comparative image quality against other desktops.

Before purchase, find the warranty terms, repair options, replacement-part availability and practical upgrade path for the chosen model. Integrated components can make service more involved than on a conventional desktop, so understand what repair would entail if a key component fails.

For a business purchase, also verify operating-system management, security requirements, procurement policy and the support process your organization expects. Warranty and service terms depend on the seller, manufacturer, model and region; check the applicable terms rather than assuming a universal standard.
Compare the cost of a usable setup and energy use
Compare the complete setup rather than just the computer’s base price: check whether a keyboard and pointing device are included, and add only the adapters, hub or external storage your setup actually needs. Include warranty and service terms in the comparison where they affect your decision.
