A Wi-Fi watch needs its paired phone nearby and connected over Bluetooth to call emergency services; an LTE watch needs active LTE service. Fall Detection has separate age, country, and location-permission requirements. None of these checks can guarantee that a call or fall alert will work.
First identify what failed
Note your watch generation, whether it is a Wi-Fi or LTE model, and your country. Then distinguish the symptom: Fall Detection is missing, it did not recognize a fall, it did not share location, or manually initiated Emergency SOS did not place a call. These are different problems, and a missed fall alone does not show that the watch is defective. Google lists model and feature availability in its Pixel Watch safety-features guide.

Check Emergency SOS settings and the activation gesture
On the watch, open Settings → Safety & emergency → Emergency SOS. Confirm the feature is enabled and check which calling mode is selected. You can also review Emergency SOS in the Pixel Watch phone app.
- Touch & hold to call: Press the crown five times quickly, then touch and hold the screen for three seconds. Releasing before three seconds returns to the first screen and does not place the call.
- Automatically call: Press the crown five times quickly to start a five-second countdown.
Do not place an emergency call just to test the setting. If you accidentally call, do not hang up: tell the operator it was accidental and that you do not need help, as Google instructs.

Check the watch’s connection to emergency services
The required calling path depends on the model. An LTE watch does not need its paired phone nearby to call, but it does need an active LTE connection. A Wi-Fi model needs its paired phone nearby and connected to the watch over Bluetooth; without that link, the watch cannot be used to speak with emergency services. Google also warns that a weak phone network can prevent an emergency call.
Check the connection that applies to your watch rather than assuming a settings change will solve a network problem. LTE hardware alone is not enough if service is inactive or coverage is unavailable. Some regions require an active carrier connection or Safety Signal for emergency calling. Google’s emergency safety guidance describes these phone and LTE requirements.

Check Fall Detection availability, settings, and location permission
On a supported watch, press the crown, open Safety, and select Fall detection to review its setting. If the option is absent, check the watch’s generation and whether Fall Detection is available in your country using Google’s model and feature list.
- Fall Detection is for adults; legal adulthood varies by country.
- Availability varies by country, and the feature depends on network connectivity and other factors.
- Grant location permission if Fall Detection needs to share your location externally.
- Fall Detection uses motion sensors and may not detect every fall. High-impact activities can also trigger it.
These limits mean a missed event does not, by itself, establish a fault. Google’s Pixel Watch safety-features guide covers feature availability and limitations.

Use the specific checks for Safety Signal
Safety Signal is separate from ordinary LTE service and applies only to eligible devices and accounts. Google’s current guidance specifies Pixel Watch 2 or 3 LTE, a Google Health Premium subscription, and availability in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Germany. It also lists roaming between the US and Canada, and between the UK and Germany. The page says an eSIM may take up to 24 hours to activate and the watch-face indicator may take up to 15 minutes to appear after you walk away from the phone.
Google says Safety Signal is unavailable on new Pixel Watch 2 and 3 purchases from AT&T or Verizon, and on previously carrier-purchased Pixel Watch 2 devices that have not activated it. Requirements can change, so check the live Safety Signal support page for your device and region.

If setup or activation reports an error
- Setup connection error: Check that Bluetooth connects the watch and phone, and that the phone has internet access.
- Activation error: Retry signup. If the error persists, Google’s documented recovery is to factory reset the watch and use Reset eSIM.
- Internal error: Check eligibility: the watch must not already have carrier LTE connectivity; the account country and current region must be supported; the account must not be age-restricted; and Google Health Premium must be active.
If checking an already activated Safety Signal
To check whether the service is active away from the phone, Google says to turn off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on the watch and look for the Safety Signal symbol. The assigned number is reachable only when you are away from the phone and that symbol is displayed. Follow Google’s Safety Signal instructions for details.
What these checks can—and cannot—establish
Google warns that Fall Detection may not detect all falls. It also says Emergency SOS depends on network connectivity and other factors, may not be reliable for emergency communications, and is not available in all countries or languages. The cited guidance does not provide a fall-detection accuracy statistic or an emergency-call success rate. Treat the watch as an additional safety feature, not a guaranteed way to contact emergency services.
