Start with the browser’s About page, then restart the browser if it offers an update. If that does not work, check the computer’s restart status, operating-system support, installation source, permissions, and any security or workplace restrictions before reinstalling. The right fix depends on which browser you use, how it was installed, the exact message shown, and whether the device is managed.
1. Check the browser’s update page and apply any downloaded update
Google Chrome
- Open More (the three-dot menu) > Help > About Google Chrome.
- Let Chrome check for updates. If Relaunch appears, save your work and select it to apply the update.
Chrome normally applies updates in the background after it closes and reopens. The update may be downloaded but still waiting for a relaunch. See Google’s Chrome update instructions.

Mozilla Firefox
- Open the menu, choose Help > About Firefox.
- Allow Firefox to check for and download an update. When prompted, select Restart to update Firefox.
Mozilla Support says, “Firefox updates automatically in most cases, but you can manually check for and install updates if needed.” The About window can say Firefox is up to date while an update is still downloading in the background. See Mozilla’s Firefox update guidance.

2. Restart the browser, then the computer
Close the browser completely and reopen it. If the update still will not apply, restart the computer and check the About page again. A browser process left running can prevent an update from completing; Mozilla notes that another open or lingering Firefox process, including one in another signed-in user’s session, can trigger an update failure.

Close other software that may be interfering and retry. Avoid ending unfamiliar system processes or disabling security protection as a first step.
3. Match the fix to the installation source and operating system
Chrome: confirm the computer is supported
Check Google’s current Chrome troubleshooting guidance for system requirements and the precise error shown. Supported operating systems can change, so rely on the live requirements rather than an old list. If the computer no longer meets them, reinstalling the same browser version may not solve the problem.

Firefox: update through the channel that installed it
- Mozilla installer: Use Mozilla’s standard update instructions.
- Microsoft Store: Update the Store version through Microsoft Store.
- Linux distribution package: Update Firefox through the distribution’s package manager or repository.
Mozilla’s standard Firefox instructions apply to copies installed from Mozilla, not copies maintained by the Store or a Linux distribution. See Mozilla’s update guidance.
4. Check whether the device or account is managed
Messages such as “Updates are disabled by administrator”, or a work or school Firefox installation that reports no newer version, may reflect an organization’s policy rather than a broken updater. Chrome administrators can disable updates, and Firefox administrators can lock installations to a particular version.

On a work or school device, contact IT before changing managed settings or trying to bypass a restriction. Firefox’s enterprise controls are described in Mozilla’s enterprise policy documentation.
On a personal computer, check that your account has permission to update or install applications. Mozilla notes that running Firefox as administrator can resolve some Windows update failures; use that only on a device you control and only if an account-permission issue is plausible. 5. Check security software and network restrictions
Chrome
Google advises checking antivirus, firewall, and parental-control settings. Confirm that they do not block Chrome updates or access to tools.google.com and dl.google.com. Review application or web-filter rules rather than turning protection off permanently. Google’s steps for messages including “Update server not available” and “Download failed” are at Chrome update failures.
Firefox
If Firefox reports “Update Failed”, close programs that may interfere and retry. If security software appears to be blocking the updater, check its application-control or update rules safely, or consult its support documentation; not every Firefox update failure is caused by security software. 6. Reinstall only after the reversible checks
Before reinstalling
Use the browser’s official instructions and confirm you have access to important data before uninstalling. Browser bookmarks, passwords, and other data may depend on the local profile or account sync; check that sync is complete or make an appropriate backup rather than assuming every item is safely stored online. Do not delete profile data as part of a routine reinstall.
Chrome
Google’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking system requirements, uninstalling Chrome, downloading it again, and reinstalling. On Windows, Google also suggests trying the standalone installer. Mac users are directed to download Google Software Update again. Firefox
Mozilla says a manually downloaded Firefox installer can be run over the existing version, preserving user data. Use Mozilla’s official download and installation guidance at Firefox update-failure guidance and Firefox update instructions. For Store and Linux distribution installations, repair or update through those same channels instead.

If the error persists, note the browser and version, operating system, exact message or error code, installation source, and whether a restart changed anything. Share those details with your organization’s administrator on a managed device, or use the browser vendor’s official support guidance on a personal device. This helps distinguish a pending restart, an unsupported system, a blocked connection, an account-permission problem, and an administrator policy.
