What to Do if Breaking-News Alerts Are Causing Stress

Keep safety alerts, mute repetitive headline pushes, and replace constant interruptions with planned check-ins, screen-free periods and practical stress supports.

If breaking-news alerts leave you tense, distracted or unable to stop checking, keep only notifications that could affect your immediate safety and mute nonessential headline pushes. Then replace random interruptions with planned check-ins from a trusted source, protect screen-free time and use ordinary stress-management steps. You do not have to ignore emergencies to reduce media overload.

Start with a safety-versus-headline audit

Not every alert serves the same purpose. An evacuation order, severe-weather warning or public-health instruction may require quick action. A push notification announcing a developing political story, market move or repeated update usually can wait until your planned check-in.

Make two lists before changing settings:

  • Keep: alerts you genuinely rely on for immediate personal safety, such as local emergency management, weather warnings or instructions from a trusted health authority.
  • Mute or reduce: breaking-news banners, duplicate alerts from several outlets, social-media notifications and “live update” pushes that interrupt you without requiring action.

During an active emergency, stay informed through authoritative channels. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says information from the CDC and state or local health departments can help people make decisions: CDC emergency-preparedness guidance. Reducing discretionary alerts is different from disconnecting from safety instructions.

Mute nonessential alerts without losing access to news

Device menus change between operating-system versions and apps, so the exact labels on your phone may differ. The general path is to open the news app’s notification settings, identify breaking-news or live-update categories, and switch off only those categories. You can also use your phone’s system notification settings to silence an individual app while leaving other apps unchanged.

  1. Open the app that generates the stressful alert and look for Settings, Notifications or Alert preferences.
  2. Disable categories such as breaking news, trending stories, live blogs or promotional notifications. Leave emergency or location-based safety alerts on if you depend on them.
  3. If the app has no useful categories, mute its notifications at the phone level and open the app manually when you choose.
  4. Repeat the audit for social-media apps that relay headlines. A single story may otherwise produce several overlapping interruptions.
  5. Check that your chosen safety alerts still appear by reviewing the app’s test or notification-history option, if one is provided. Do not trigger a real emergency alert as a test.

You can still read the same publication later; muting a push changes the timing, not your access. If you are unsure whether an alert is safety-critical, keep it temporarily and verify its purpose with the issuing agency.

Replace constant interruptions with deliberate check-ins

There is no evidence in the cited guidance for one ideal number of news checks per day. A workable schedule depends on your job, caregiving responsibilities, location and the kind of emergency information you need. The useful change is moving from an unpredictable stream to a plan you control.

Pattern What happens When it may fit
Continuous push alerts Your attention is interrupted whenever an app publishes an update; several outlets may repeat the same event. Only when you have a specific, immediate safety reason to monitor alerts.
Planned check-ins You open one trusted source at chosen times, read the necessary update and close it when finished. Most ordinary news use, especially when notifications are raising stress.

Choose one or two reliable sources rather than scanning every feed. Before opening an app, decide what you need to know: for example, whether an official evacuation order changed, not every reaction to the story. Stop when that question is answered. If your schedule changes because conditions worsen, add a temporary check-in and return to your normal plan when the immediate risk passes.

Protect periods when your nervous system can recover

Set boundaries that do not depend on willpower at the moment an alert arrives. Keep phones and news feeds away from meals, conversations and the period before sleep. A charger outside the bedroom, a paper alarm clock or a scheduled “do not disturb” period can make the boundary easier to maintain. These are behavior options, not medical treatment.

Social-media feeds are designed to continue indefinitely. The American Psychological Association (APA) describes using a 15-minute timer at the start of a social-media check as one practical example; it is an option, not a medically established limit. When the timer ends, write down any story you still want to verify and return to it at the next planned check-in instead of extending the session automatically.

If completely screen-free periods are unrealistic, start with one protected block, such as dinner or the final 30 minutes before bed, and expand it if it helps. Tell household members how to reach you for a genuine emergency so the boundary does not create uncertainty.

Use simple actions when an alert has already raised your stress

After an upsetting headline, give your body a transition before deciding whether to read more. The CDC’s “Managing Stress” guidance, dated May 12, 2026, recommends taking breaks from news and social media, making time to unwind, breathing deeply, stretching or meditating, keeping a journal, spending time outdoors and connecting with trusted people.

  • Pause your breathing: take several slow, comfortable breaths and lengthen the exhale without forcing it.
  • Change posture and place: stand, stretch, walk outside or move to another room for a few minutes.
  • Write, then stop: note the headline, the fact you need to verify and the next time you will check. This can prevent the same thought from looping.
  • Reconnect: tell someone you trust what you are feeling rather than processing an endless stream alone.
  • Return to routine: eat, hydrate, sleep and exercise as normally as circumstances allow.

The World Health Organization similarly advises limiting time spent following news if it increases stress and emphasizes routine, sleep, exercise and connection in its stress Q&A. These steps may lower immediate strain, but they do not diagnose or treat an anxiety disorder.

Notice the signs that checking has become a stress loop

Pay attention to what happens immediately before and after you check. Clinician Steven Stosny, PhD, told APA that “The red flag is if you get this body tension, or a rise in your pulse rate, just before you check the news.” Other useful warning signs include repeatedly reopening the same feed, losing sleep, being unable to focus on work or caregiving, or feeling more distressed after each session but checking again anyway.

What studies can—and cannot—tell you

APA’s 2022 account of several studies supports caution about heavy exposure, but the findings are associations and do not prove that alerts alone cause distress. Some research took place during the COVID-19 pandemic, when people were already facing unusual danger and uncertainty. People who were distressed may also have sought more news.

Finding reported by APA How to interpret it
2,251 adults in a spring 2020 study by Hwang and colleagues who sought COVID-19 information more frequently across media reported more emotional distress. An association during the pandemic, not proof that notification frequency caused the distress.
A 30-day study of 61 young adults linked social-media news exposure with more depression and PTSD symptoms. The report does not establish that exposure caused those symptoms.
Two-thirds of 5,545 adults in Spain during a COVID-19 shutdown were likely to experience less stress when they limited COVID-19 news exposure and also followed healthy routines and spent time outdoors. The result cannot be attributed to reducing news alone because the participants also changed other behaviors.
APA reported that 83% of Americans said they were stressed about the nation’s future in June 2020, and 73% felt overwhelmed by the number of world crises in a March 2022 survey. These are historical survey figures, not current prevalence estimates.

The practical conclusion is modest: if a particular pattern of alerts reliably leaves you more activated, reducing that pattern is reasonable. It is not evidence that everyone should stop following news or that muting alerts cures a mental-health condition.

Troubleshoot common situations

You worry that muting alerts means missing something vital

Keep official safety channels and create a manual check-in with a trusted news or public-health source. Ask a family member or colleague to contact you through a separate channel for urgent personal matters. Reassess the arrangement when an emergency begins or ends.

You mute alerts but keep opening the feed automatically

Remove the app from your home screen, sign out after checking, or use a timer for each session. Put a notebook beside the phone and record the question you want answered before opening it. If you still cannot stop, ask someone you trust to help you set a schedule.

One story is genuinely relevant to your work or family

Set a temporary window for that story and define an end point, such as reading the official update and one explanatory report. Avoid adding every commentator or repost to the same monitoring list.

News is affecting sleep

Make the final part of the evening screen-free, keep the phone away from the bed and move the next news check to the morning. If sleep problems continue, mention them to a health-care professional rather than trying to solve persistent symptoms with more checking.

When to seek professional help

Contact a mental-health professional or trusted health-care provider if distress lasts several days, keeps worsening, or prevents normal routines such as sleeping, eating, working, studying or caring for yourself or others. The CDC’s emergency guidance specifically recommends professional help when feelings persist for several days or interfere with daily life.

If you are in the United States and in crisis or thinking about suicide, call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. If there is immediate danger, call local emergency services. People outside the United States should use their country’s crisis service or emergency number.

A repeatable plan for the next week

  1. Today, list every source that sends alerts and mark each as safety-critical, useful-but-not-urgent or unnecessary.
  2. Mute the unnecessary categories and duplicate sources; keep the safety-critical channels you rely on.
  3. Choose a trusted source and schedule a check-in that fits your responsibilities.
  4. Protect one screen-free period around a meal or before sleep. Add a 15-minute timer to any social-media check if scrolling tends to run on.
  5. When an alert raises tension, pause, breathe, move, write down the question you need answered and return at the planned time.
  6. After a week, keep the settings that reduce interruptions without making you less able to respond to genuine safety information. Seek professional support if stress is still disrupting daily life.
