AWS IAM Roles vs. Long-Lived Credentials for AI Agents

Use an IAM role with temporary credentials for an AI agent whenever its runtime can use a role or supported federation. AWS’s workload guidance explicitly says to require temporary credentials with IAM roles. Reserve long-lived IAM-user access keys for a documented compatibility constraint, then protect, rotate, monitor, and revoke them deliberately.

What the two choices actually mean

An IAM role is an assumable identity

An IAM role is not a permanent password or key stored inside the agent. It is an AWS identity with a permission policy and a trust relationship. A workload, user, or federated principal that satisfies the trust policy assumes the role and receives a role session with temporary security credentials. AWS describes this model in IAM roles.

The agent uses the session credentials to call AWS APIs. The credential set contains an access key ID, a secret access key, and a session token. Requests made with temporary credentials must include that session token, as described in Use temporary credentials with AWS resources.

A long-lived key belongs to an IAM user

A long-lived access key is created for an IAM user and configured for the client or workload. IAM-user keys do not expire automatically. They remain usable until an administrator disables or deletes them, so an exposed key can continue working during the entire period before someone discovers and revokes it. Root-user credentials are also long-lived; an agent should not be given root access.

A static key can be valid for months or years if nobody changes it. That persistence is useful only when the client cannot use a role or an approved federation method. It also creates a distribution problem: the key must be placed somewhere the agent can read it, and every copy becomes a potential exposure point.

Why temporary credentials are the default for an AI agent

An agent is an application that can select tools and make AWS API calls, often repeatedly and with limited human intervention. If its credential is copied from a log, image, host, or prompt-processing component, a temporary role session eventually becomes unusable when it expires. A long-lived key remains useful to whoever copied it until you find and revoke it. Expiration therefore limits the useful lifetime of an exposure, although it does not compensate for excessive permissions or a weak trust policy.

Temporary credentials also reduce the need to embed a permanent secret in source code, a container image, an environment template, or a deployment bundle. AWS’s best-practices page states the recommendation directly: “Require workloads to use temporary credentials with IAM roles to access AWS.” The page discusses workloads generally rather than AI agents specifically; applying it to an agent is appropriate when the agent is an application or workload making AWS API requests.

Temporary does not mean self-securing. A role with broad permissions can still let a compromised agent perform destructive actions during its session. The role’s trust relationship must restrict who or what can assume it, and its permissions must cover only the agent’s actual jobs. The agent must also obtain and refresh credentials correctly before they expire.

Choose the credential path by where the agent runs

Agent on AWS compute

For an agent running on an AWS compute service that supports an attached workload role, assign a role to that runtime. The AWS integration delivers temporary credentials to the workload, so the application does not need an IAM-user key in its configuration. This is the simplest case: the platform is the identity-delivery mechanism, while IAM controls what the role may do.

Use a separate role for materially different agents or trust boundaries rather than giving every process one shared identity. A planning agent that reads data, for example, should not automatically share the same role as an execution agent that changes resources. The exact split should follow the actions each workload performs.

Agent outside AWS

First identify a supported way to establish the external workload’s identity. AWS documents several options, including IAM Roles Anywhere for X.509-backed workloads, Security Token Service federation using SAML or web identity, and integrations for certain external compute environments. These methods let the external process obtain temporary credentials instead of carrying an IAM-user key as its primary secret.

The correct choice depends on what the hosting environment can prove and refresh. An X.509-based design requires certificate issuance, protection, and replacement. A SAML or web-identity design requires a functioning identity provider and a reliable way to obtain a fresh assertion or token. In every case, verify the complete renewal path before the agent is allowed to run unattended.

Client or tool cannot use roles or federation

A static IAM-user key may be necessary when the workload genuinely cannot use a role and the client has no relevant identity-federation support. AWS presents these as constrained use cases, not as the normal design. Treat the limitation as something to investigate: check the runtime, SDK or client integration, and deployment platform before accepting permanent keys.

Implementation plan for an agent using a role

  1. Inventory the agent’s AWS actions. List the services, API operations, resources, and read-versus-write behavior the agent actually needs. Do not start with administrator permissions and hope to narrow them later.
  2. Create a dedicated role. Attach permissions for those actions and resources only. Separate read-only analysis from state-changing execution when their risk or lifecycle differs.
  3. Write a restrictive trust relationship. Allow only the intended AWS runtime, external identity, or federation path to assume the role. The trust policy answers “who may obtain credentials,” while the permissions policy answers “what the resulting session may do.”
  4. Connect the role to the runtime. On AWS, use the compute service’s workload-role integration. Outside AWS, configure the selected Roles Anywhere, SAML, web-identity, or other supported delivery path.
  5. Confirm credential shape. Ensure the agent’s AWS requests include the session token along with the access key ID and secret access key. A client that sends only the two key fields will fail with temporary credentials.
  6. Test expiry and renewal. Run the agent long enough to cross a credential refresh boundary in a nonproduction environment. Confirm that it reacquires a valid session without exposing credentials to prompts, logs, tool output, or files that are broader than necessary.
  7. Review actual use. Compare the role’s permissions with the actions the agent performs and remove unused access. Keep the role’s trust and permission changes under the same change-control process as the application.

Implementation plan for an external agent

Using IAM Roles Anywhere

Roles Anywhere is intended for workloads that can authenticate with X.509 certificates. Establish which certificate authority issues the workload certificate, how the private key is protected, and how certificates are replaced before they expire. The certificate proves the external workload’s identity; the assumed role still needs a narrowly scoped permission policy.

Using SAML or web identity federation

With SAML or web identity, an external identity system supplies an assertion or token that AWS exchanges for a role session. Define which identity or claim can assume which role, and test failure behavior when the assertion or token is missing, invalid, or expired. The agent needs a dependable process for obtaining a new assertion or token and exchanging it before the current session ends.

Using an external-compute integration

AWS also documents integrations for certain external compute environments. Select one that matches the hosting platform and verify that it supplies temporary credentials without requiring a copied IAM-user key. The practical questions are the same: what identity is trusted, where permissions are defined, how credentials are delivered, and how renewal works during a long-running agent task.

Least privilege for agents that can choose tools

AI agents deserve the same permission discipline as any other workload, with an additional concern: the agent may choose among tools or construct parameters dynamically. Define permissions around the tools and resources the agent is authorized to use, not around every service that might be convenient during development.

  • Keep discovery or analysis permissions separate from mutation permissions when possible.
  • Limit resource scope instead of granting an entire account or service namespace.
  • Constrain the role trust policy to the intended runtime or federated principal.
  • Use a distinct role when two agents have different business purposes or different blast radii.
  • Test denied actions as well as successful actions so an unexpected tool call fails safely.
  • Revisit the policy when the agent gains a new tool, data source, or automation path.

A temporary session can still be abused while it is valid. Least privilege, a narrow trust relationship, and correct credential renewal are complementary controls, not alternatives.

When a long-lived key is unavoidable

Document the specific constraint that rules out roles and federation: for example, a third-party client with no supported identity option or a workload that cannot participate in the available role-delivery mechanism. “It is easier” is not a security or compatibility justification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Create the least-privileged IAM user and key. Grant only the actions and resources the unsupported client requires.
  2. Keep the key out of source and repositories. Do not paste it into application code, an agent prompt, a container image, or a configuration file that is distributed more broadly than the workload.
  3. Use a protected secret-delivery location. Restrict which process and operators can retrieve the value, and prevent it from appearing in diagnostic output or ordinary logs.
  4. Plan replacement before deployment. AWS recommends updating long-term credentials when needed. Treat replacement as a routine operation, not an emergency-only task.
  5. Review last-used information. AWS documents access-last-used review for necessary long-term credentials. Use it to identify stale keys and permissions that no longer support an active workload.
  6. Prepare revocation. Know exactly which key to disable or delete if the agent, host, repository, or operator account is compromised.
  7. Recheck the constraint periodically. A client that cannot federate today may gain support later; migrate to a role or federation path when that becomes possible.

Common failures and how to diagnose them

“The security token included in the request is invalid”

Check that the agent is using the complete temporary credential set, including the session token, and that all three values belong to the same role session. Then verify that the session has not expired and that the renewal path can obtain a new set.

Credentials work briefly, then calls fail

This usually indicates that the agent does not refresh temporary credentials or starts a task with a session that expires before the task ends. Test refresh before expiry and ensure the process reacquires credentials rather than retrying an unusable set indefinitely.

Assume-role requests are denied

Compare the requesting identity with the role’s trust relationship. A correct permissions policy cannot compensate for a trust policy that does not permit the intended principal or federation path.

The agent receives AccessDenied for an AWS action

Determine whether the action is outside the role’s intentionally limited permissions or whether the policy omits a required resource. Add only the minimum missing permission after confirming that the agent genuinely needs the action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A static key is the only option offered by a client

Verify the client’s current support for role delivery, STS federation, web identity, or an external-workload integration. If no supported path exists, record the limitation and apply the storage, replacement, last-used review, and revocation controls for a long-lived key.

A practical decision checklist

  • Can the agent run with an AWS workload role? If yes, use that path.
  • If it runs outside AWS, can it use Roles Anywhere, SAML, web identity, or another documented integration? Prefer the supported federation path that fits the environment.
  • Does the role trust only the intended identity? Review the trust relationship separately from permissions.
  • Are permissions limited to the agent’s actual tools and resources? Remove development-only or unused access.
  • Does the client send the session token and refresh before expiry? Test both conditions explicitly.
  • If a long-lived key remains, is the incompatibility documented? Treat it as an exception, not a default.
  • Can operators replace and revoke the key quickly? If not, the design is not ready for unattended operation.

How specifically this guidance applies to AI agents

The AWS pages cited here describe workloads, applications, clients, roles, and federated principals rather than publishing a separate AI-agent credential policy. An AI agent that calls AWS APIs is still an application workload for this purpose. The agent’s ability to select tools makes permission scoping and trust boundaries especially important, but it does not create a reason to prefer permanent keys.

In practical terms, give the agent a role session whenever its runtime supports one, keep the role narrow, make renewal a tested part of the runtime, and use a long-lived IAM-user key only when a verified compatibility limitation leaves no supported alternative.
