If an NBFC invoice appears to charge the wrong GST rate, first verify the exact service and invoice details, then ask the NBFC in writing to explain or correct the charge. The right rate cannot be determined from “NBFC service” alone: it depends on what was supplied, the transaction and invoice facts, and the rules applicable on the invoice date. Keep the original bill and correspondence, and handle any business input tax credit (ITC) question separately from the invoice correction.
Check the invoice before deciding the rate is wrong
A rate that looks unfamiliar is not, by itself, proof of an error. Identify the precise service or fee on the invoice and compare the charge with the transaction facts and applicable GST classification for that date. Do not rely on a generic rate chart without checking what the NBFC supplied.

- Confirm the invoice was issued by the NBFC and note its invoice number and date.
- Record the exact service or line item, taxable value, GST rate, and tax amount.
- Check the supplier and recipient GSTINs and any place-of-supply information shown.
- Separate a possible arithmetic or data-entry mistake from a disagreement about how a service or fee is classified.
If the basis is unclear, ask the issuer to identify the service classification and explain the rate it applied. The official correction and complaint processes do not establish a single GST rate for every NBFC service.

Ask the NBFC for an explanation or correction in writing
Use the NBFC’s official customer-support or grievance channel. A clear written request gives the issuer the information needed to investigate and leaves a record if you later need to escalate.
#1 Best Overall
- State the invoice number and date, the disputed line item, and the rate and tax amount shown.
- Explain why you believe the charge may be wrong and attach any relevant supporting classification information, if available.
- Ask the NBFC to state its classification and rate basis in writing.
- If it agrees there is an error, request the appropriate corrected invoice or adjustment document and confirmation of how it will correct its GST reporting.
- Set a reasonable response deadline and save your submission and complaint reference number.
Keep the original invoice rather than replacing or discarding it. Do not withhold a loan instalment or another contractual payment solely because you dispute a GST line; get advice on the contract and possible consequences first.
What correction should the issuer make?
The NBFC should confirm the correction method that applies to the transaction. GSTN’s GSTR-1 guide documents portal processes for amending invoice details and earlier-period credit- or debit-note entries. In the scenario covered by its IMS additional FAQ, GSTN says invoice amendment is advisable when correcting a wrong invoice, because a credit note that cannot be linked to the original invoice may not let IMS determine the original invoice’s status.
That portal guidance is not a universal ruling that one document is legally required for every correction. The issuer should assess the transaction and confirm whether it will amend the invoice or use another appropriate adjustment document. Ask for a copy of the corrected document and confirmation of the related return treatment; do not assume that a change to your copy alone has updated the issuer’s GST records.

A printed GST amount does not automatically establish that you can claim it as input tax credit. If you are a registered business, check the corrected invoice or adjustment in the relevant GST records and assess eligibility under the rules that apply to your transaction, recipient, and timing. GSTN says accepted IMS records appear in the ITC-available section, while rejected records appear in the ITC-rejected section.
For a material amount or an unresolved eligibility question, ask a tax professional to review the facts and current law before including the credit in a return. If you are an individual consumer with no business ITC claim, this step is not relevant to your personal invoice correction.
Escalate an unresolved grievance only if the RBI scheme applies
First complain to the NBFC through its grievance process. The Reserve Bank of India’s Integrated Ombudsman Scheme (RB-IOS, 2021) can cover eligible customer complaints about deficiency in service by specified regulated entities, including certain NBFCs. Coverage is not universal, and whether a GST-rate disagreement qualifies depends on the circumstances; the scheme does not guarantee a ruling on tax classification or a particular remedy.
RBI’s official FAQ says a customer generally must first complain to the regulated entity. If the NBFC does not respond within 30 days, or its response is unsatisfactory, an eligible complaint may be considered. RBI states that approaching the Ombudsman without first complaining to the entity—or, where there is no response, before 30 days have passed—makes the complaint non-maintainable under the scheme.

Keep a concise evidence file
Save the documents that establish what was charged, what you asked for, and how the NBFC responded. This makes it easier to request a specific remedy and to explain the history if you escalate.
- Original invoice and any corrected invoice, credit note, or other adjustment document.
- Payment evidence and the relevant account or loan statement.
- Your written complaint, attachments, and reference number.
- NBFC replies and confirmation of any change it says it made to its GST reporting.
State the outcome you are seeking—an explanation, a correction, or an adjustment or refund if warranted—and ask the NBFC to confirm the action taken. Whether a refund or other remedy is due depends on the transaction and applicable rules.
