Kindle e-reader software normally downloads and installs automatically over Wi-Fi. If an update has not arrived, you can install it from a computer—but first confirm your exact Kindle model, because Amazon publishes different software versions and files for different devices.
How do Kindle software updates arrive?
When a Kindle is connected to Wi-Fi, Amazon says its free software updates download and install automatically. They include general improvements and performance enhancements. To allow an automatic update, connect the Kindle to Wi-Fi and give it time to receive and install the software.

There is no single software version for every Kindle. Amazon’s Kindle software update page lists versions by model and generation. For example, the page accessed in 2026 listed version 5.19.6 for several newer models, including Kindle Scribe models, Kindle Colorsoft (1st Generation), Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation, 2024 Release), and Kindle (11th Generation, 2024 Release). It listed version 5.19.2 for Kindle (11th Generation, 2022 Release) and Kindle Paperwhite (11th Generation). These are model-specific listings from that access date, not a universal version or a guarantee that they remain the latest.

To check whether a particular feature is part of an update, use the release notes for your exact Kindle model and software release. Amazon’s update page links to model-specific release information; a general update listing does not establish that every Kindle receives the same feature.

How do I update my Kindle manually?
Use Amazon’s model-specific software page to identify your Kindle and download its matching update file. Do not transfer a file intended for another model. Then follow Amazon’s manual update instructions:
- On a computer, download the software file for your exact Kindle model.
- Turn on the Kindle and connect it to the computer with its cable.
- Copy the downloaded update file to the “Kindle” drive.
- Safely eject the Kindle after the transfer. On Kindle Scribe, use the on-screen Disconnect option.
- Disconnect the cable. On the Kindle, open Menu, then Settings. Open Menu again and select Update Your Kindle.
- Confirm the update. The Kindle will show that it is updating and restart when the process is complete.
Amazon advises charging the Kindle and leaving it to sit overnight after the update so books can index. Its instructions also note an additional transfer-software requirement for Mac computers running OS X 10.7 or later when transferring to a Kindle Scribe.

Why is my Kindle not updating?
If an expected update has not installed, try the following checks before using the manual process:
- Check the connection: Automatic updates depend on the Kindle being connected wirelessly. Connect it to Wi-Fi and allow time for the download and installation.
- Confirm the model and version: Compare the Kindle’s model with Amazon’s update listing. Versions differ across models and generations, so a version number seen for another Kindle may not apply to yours.
- Use the matching file: If you install manually, download only the file listed for your exact model and follow Amazon’s transfer and update steps.
- Check the release information: A feature may not be listed for your Kindle or release. Look at the release notes for that specific model rather than assuming every update contains the same features.

How long does a Kindle receive security updates?
Amazon’s security update policy says devices bought new from Amazon as seller on Amazon.com receive security updates for at least four years from purchase, or until a later date listed for that model. For devices obtained elsewhere, Amazon directs readers to its model table. Amazon may continue support beyond the minimum, subject to technical limits.
