Stop using the equipment. If a correctly specified replacement fuse blows again, do not fit another fuse, increase the rating, bridge the holder, or keep switching the unit on. An EZ80 is a valve designation, not a universal fuse specification. Identify the equipment make and model, copy the fuse details from its manual or markings, and have the device diagnosed by a suitably qualified repairer if the correct fuse fails again.
Why an EZ80 does not tell you which fuse to use
EZ80 identifies a rectifier valve used in some valve radios, amplifiers and power-supply circuits. It does not identify one appliance, one transformer, one mains voltage or one protective-fuse value. The same valve designation appears in substantially different designs, so choosing a fuse from another EZ80-equipped product can be dangerous.

- current rating, in amperes or milliamperes;
- voltage rating;
- physical format and dimensions;
- fast-acting or time-delay (anti-surge) characteristic; and
- the supply-voltage version for which the specification applies.
A fuse that is right for one valve power supply may be wrong for another. The WAV Models 80/81 operation manual, for example, assigns different fuse ratings to different line-voltage ranges. Those values apply only to those instruments and cannot be transferred to an unidentified EZ80 device.

First response when the replacement fuse blows again
- Switch the equipment off and disconnect it from the mains. Do not keep trying replacement fuses to see whether the next one survives.
- Do not increase the fuse rating. A larger fuse can allow destructive current to continue long enough to damage wiring, transformers or other parts.
- Never bypass the fuse. Foil, wire or any improvised bridge removes the protection the equipment was designed to have.
- Leave the unit closed if you are not trained to service mains and valve equipment. Valve circuits can contain hazardous voltages even after the power switch is off.
- Arrange model-specific diagnosis. Use a qualified electronics or vintage-equipment repairer, particularly if there is heat damage, smoke, a burning smell, a cracked fuse holder or uncertainty about the correct fuse.
The Icon Audio PS3 Mk II manual states, “Should the replacement fuse also blow there is a fault.” The WAV maintenance manual gives the same practical message: persistent fuse blowing must be rectified before operation continues. In other words, the second failure is a stop signal, not an invitation to try a stronger fuse.
Verify that the replacement fuse actually matches the equipment
Find the exact make and model
“EZ80” is not enough information for a safe purchase. Record the manufacturer, model number and mains-voltage version from the rear label, chassis, manual or service documentation. If the equipment has been modified, tell the repairer that as well.
Read every part of the fuse designation
Compare the replacement with the marking on the equipment or in its own manual, not with a listing for another EZ80 product. Confirm the current value, voltage value, physical size and the specified response type. “Anti-surge,” “slow-blow” and “time-delay” describe a fuse intended to tolerate a short startup surge; a fast-acting fuse behaves differently. Neither type is automatically correct without the equipment maker’s instruction.

Check the supply-voltage variant
Fuse values can change when the same design is supplied from a different mains voltage. The Icon Audio PS3 Mk II manual is a clear model-specific example: it lists a 1 amp anti-surge fuse for its stated mains version and a separate 2 amp anti-surge fuse for its USA 115-volt version. These figures are not recommendations for other equipment. They show why a voltage variant must be identified before a fuse is fitted.
Inspect the holder and the old fuse without guessing
Look only for information that can be obtained externally: a legible fuse marking, the holder’s size and signs of overheating. A darkened or loose holder, melted plastic or a fuse that is difficult to remove is useful evidence for a technician. Do not infer the intended rating from the appearance of the blown element, and do not substitute a physically similar fuse whose electrical characteristics differ.
What a repeated failure means
The fuse is a protective component, not the underlying repair. A correctly specified fuse that opens again indicates that the equipment is drawing abnormal current or experiencing another fault condition. The title alone cannot identify whether the problem is in the rectifier valve, a capacitor, transformer, wiring, switch, socket or another part of the circuit.

Do not assume that the EZ80 itself is defective merely because it is the most visible valve in the circuit. A qualified technician can determine whether the valve is involved and whether other components were damaged when the fuse operated. Continuing to energise the unit can turn a repairable fault into a more expensive one.

The examples deliberately point in different directions: the valve designation is shared, while the surrounding circuit and fuse protection are not. A diode modification that is unsuitable in one power-supply design does not explain every fuse failure in every EZ80 appliance.
A repair report that illustrates why diagnosis must stay model-specific
In a Bush VHF54 restoration discussion dated 18 December 2022, a restorer described an EZ80 with a blown cathode and traced an HT short to carbonized insulation on a switch. That account is an example of an equipment-level fault associated with one restoration; it is not evidence that a carbonized switch, a blown cathode or any other particular defect is common in your equipment.

Use such reports to understand why a fuse can be the messenger rather than the cause. A technician still needs the actual circuit, measurements and condition of your unit before naming a failed part.
How to prepare the unit for a repairer
- Write down the make, full model number, serial number if present and the intended mains-voltage setting.
- Photograph the external fuse marking and the manual page that specifies it, keeping the fuse holder closed and the equipment unplugged.
- Record exactly what happened: whether the fuse opened at switch-on, after warming up, or immediately after a replacement was fitted.
- Note any smell, smoke, crackling, visible heat damage or recent modification, valve replacement or component work.
- Give the technician the failed fuse and its packaging if you still have them, but do not install another fuse merely to reproduce the fault.
This information helps distinguish an incorrect replacement from a genuine equipment fault without asking an unqualified owner to probe a live or recently powered valve circuit.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the EZ80 as the search term for the fuse. Search results can mix unrelated products and circuits; start with the equipment model and its manual.
- Copying a value from another product. The Icon Audio and Flax Cottage figures demonstrate that even EZ80-related designs can use different protective arrangements.
- Replacing a fast-acting fuse with an anti-surge fuse, or the reverse, without authorization. The response characteristic is part of the specification.
- Fitting a higher-rated fuse because the original opens repeatedly. The WAV manual warns that doing so can damage the instrument.
- Assuming a new valve will cure the problem. A fuse failure may involve another component or wiring fault, and replacing parts at random can create additional damage.
- Continuing after a temporary success. A fuse that survives one switch-on does not prove that the fault has been repaired; recurring or intermittent symptoms still require diagnosis.
When a fuse purchase is appropriate
Buy a replacement only when you can match it to the exact equipment marking or manual, including current, voltage, dimensions and response type. A generic assortment or a fuse advertised merely as “for EZ80” is not a safe specification. If the marking is missing, illegible or inconsistent with the manual, pause the purchase and ask a repairer or the equipment manufacturer for confirmation.

There is no reliable published statistic establishing how often EZ80 equipment blows fuses. The available figures are individual product or circuit specifications, not population rates, so they cannot be used to predict the cause in your unit.
Decision guide
- The fuse has not yet been replaced: identify the equipment model and obtain the exact specified fuse before doing anything else.
- A correctly specified replacement has blown once: unplug the equipment and stop operating it; treat the event as a fault requiring diagnosis.
- You are unsure whether the replacement was correct: do not try another value. Verify the complete designation with the manual or a qualified repairer.
- There is heat, smoke, arcing, damaged insulation or a modified circuit: keep the unit disconnected and seek professional service.
Bottom line
An EZ80 does not determine a universal fuse. The safe answer to a replacement fuse that keeps blowing is to stop powering the equipment, verify the exact model-specific fuse specification and have the unresolved fault diagnosed. Never increase the rating or bypass the protective device; the correct repair depends on the particular circuit around the valve.
