Check installed RAM in Settings
Use this method when you simply need the laptop’s memory capacity, such as when checking a specification or answering a software requirement. It uses Windows’ built-in tools, so no download or paid utility is required.

- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Settings. You can also press Windows key + I to open Settings directly.
- Choose System.
- Scroll to and select About.
- Under Device specifications, find Amount of RAM installed.
The value beside that label is the laptop’s installed memory capacity. Microsoft documents this Settings path for Windows 11 and Windows 10 in its guide to finding Windows device information: Find information about your Windows device.

That is a capacity figure; it is not a reading of how much memory is free at this moment.

What the About page is telling you
“Amount of RAM installed” is the capacity you are looking for
RAM, or random-access memory, is the working memory Windows and running applications use. The About page reports the amount installed in the laptop. It is the appropriate figure when a form asks how much RAM the computer has or when you are comparing the machine with a stated memory requirement.
Do not confuse RAM with storage
The same Windows settings area can show information about the device’s storage, but storage and RAM are different components. Storage holds files for the long term; RAM is the working memory used while Windows and applications are running. A large drive does not mean the laptop has a large amount of RAM, and the RAM figure does not tell you how much disk space remains.
“System type” is not a RAM measurement
The About page may show System type near the memory information. System type describes the Windows architecture, such as 64-bit, rather than the laptop’s memory capacity. Do not substitute that entry for Amount of RAM installed.

If you want to see RAM use right now: Task Manager
Task Manager is useful when the question is “Why is my laptop using so much memory?” rather than “How much memory is installed?” Microsoft describes it as a system monitor that provides insight into device performance and resource consumption, including memory usage. Open it with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- If Task Manager opens in a compact view, expand it to the full interface if Windows offers that option.
- Open the memory-related performance view, commonly found under Performance as Memory.
- Read the displayed capacity and usage figures, taking care to distinguish total or available memory from the amount currently in use.
Task Manager’s figures can change as applications open, close, or perform work. A high current-use value does not change the laptop’s installed capacity. For a stable specification to copy into a form, use the About page first; use Task Manager when you need a live view of consumption.

System Information, also called msinfo32, is the better built-in option when you want RAM details alongside hardware components, system components, and the software environment.

Open it from Start search
- Open Start.
- Search for
System Information. - Open the matching Windows utility.
- In the system summary, review the installed-memory entry and the surrounding hardware details.
Open it with the Run dialog
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
msinfo32. - Press Enter.
- Review the system summary for the installed-memory information.
Microsoft describes this utility as a comprehensive view of hardware, system components, and the software environment. Its launch instructions and scope are covered in Description of Microsoft System Information (Msinfo32.exe) Tool. Because labels and layout can vary between Windows releases, use the installed-memory line in the summary rather than relying on an exact position on the screen.
Which Windows tool should you use?

For the narrow question “How much RAM does this laptop have?”, About is the direct answer. Task Manager adds a live usage perspective, while System Information adds context about the rest of the computer.
Installed RAM versus current, available, and used memory
Windows can present several memory-related values, and they answer different questions:
- Installed RAM: the laptop’s physical memory capacity, reported on the About page as Amount of RAM installed.
- Memory in use: the portion being used by Windows, applications, and background processes at the time you look.
- Available or free memory: memory Windows can make available for additional work at that moment.
Only the first item answers a specification question. The other values are snapshots of activity and can change from one minute to the next. For instance, a laptop with 8 GB installed could show a much smaller available amount while several applications are open; that does not mean the physical RAM has changed.

If you are copying a number into a compatibility checker, use the installed figure from About unless the checker specifically asks for available or currently usable memory.

The number is lower than expected
Compare the exact label you are reading. A value beside System type describes Windows architecture, and a live percentage or “in use” amount in Task Manager describes current activity. Return to Settings > System > About and read Amount of RAM installed for the capacity.
You opened the wrong Settings page
Windows has several pages that show device information. The documented route is System, then About, followed by the Device specifications section. If you are looking at storage, Bluetooth, display, or another system subsection, select About in the System navigation.
The screen looks different from a guide
Microsoft can adjust labels and page layout between Windows releases. Look for the same concepts—About, Device specifications, and Amount of RAM installed—rather than expecting every line to appear in an identical order. If the Settings page is difficult to interpret, open Task Manager or System Information using the methods above.
You are checking a Windows 10 laptop
The Settings route applies to Windows 10 as well as Windows 11. Microsoft’s device-information documentation notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. That support date does not alter the RAM-reading steps, but it matters when evaluating the laptop’s broader security and maintenance status.
A quick decision guide
- Need one number for a specification? Open About and read Amount of RAM installed.
- Want to know whether memory is under pressure right now? Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc and inspect its memory view.
- Need RAM plus a wider inventory of the computer? Launch System Information with Start search or
msinfo32. - Unsure whether a number is RAM? Check its label. “Amount of RAM installed” is capacity; “System type” is architecture; a changing percentage or usage value is a live-monitoring reading.
What to record when documenting the laptop
If you are making an inventory or sending specifications to support, record the RAM capacity exactly as Windows displays it and note the Windows edition separately if it is relevant. Do not rewrite a live Task Manager value as the installed capacity. If more context is needed, include the System Information summary as a separate record rather than combining unrelated figures.
A concise specification entry might therefore identify the source as “Settings > System > About — Amount of RAM installed,” while a troubleshooting note might separately state the current memory-use reading from Task Manager and the time it was observed.
Built-in tools are enough for this check
Checking installed RAM does not require a third-party utility, a purchase, or opening the laptop. Settings provides the direct documented answer, Task Manager shows changing resource use, and System Information supplies a broader report. Start with About, then choose one of the alternatives only when you need information beyond the installed capacity.
