Persistent pop-ups, browser redirects, fake virus warnings, or changes you did not authorize are more concerning. Start by identifying where the ads appear, then use Safe Mode and Play Protect to check for a problematic app before considering a reset.
First, identify where the ad appears
- Inside one app: Ads shown while using a free app may be ordinary in-app advertising. One ad alone does not establish that the app is harmful.
- As a Chrome notification: A website may have permission to send notifications. If only these alerts are unwanted, turn off notification permission for the website that sent them.
- Over other screens or outside the app that triggered them: Persistent pop-ups, redirects, fake virus alerts, and interference with other apps merit a security check, particularly if you did not authorize a recent change.
Google Play’s Mobile Unwanted Software policy says, “Apps should not interfere with other apps or the usability of the device.” That is a policy standard, not a test that identifies which app is responsible. Seeing personalized ads also is not proof of malware: Android has ad privacy controls, including controls for ad topics and app-suggested ads, described in Android’s ad privacy settings.

Use Safe Mode to find an app that may be causing the problem
If intrusive ads or other suspicious behavior began after installing an app, Google recommends isolating the cause by removing recently downloaded apps one at a time.

- Remove a recently downloaded app that you do not trust or recognize.
- Restart the phone normally and check whether the symptoms stop.
- If the problem continues, repeat with another recent app. Keep a list of what you remove so you can restore unrelated apps if needed.
For unwanted Chrome notifications, revoke notification permission for the site that sent them rather than treating every browser alert as an installed-app problem. Do not tap pop-ups claiming that your phone has a virus or needs an update or download. Google advises going directly to a program’s official website when you need to obtain software. Check Play Protect and install available updates
Play Protect checks apps from Google Play and scans apps from other sources. It can warn you about potentially harmful software and may disable or remove an app.
- Open the Play Store and tap your profile icon.
- Tap Play Protect, then Settings.
- Make sure Scan apps with Play Protect is enabled. If you install apps from outside Google Play, Google’s malware-removal guidance recommends turning on improved harmful-app detection.
- Check Settings for available Android device, security, and Google Play system updates, and install them. Menu names and locations vary by phone and Android version; use the manufacturer’s instructions if the route differs.
Google describes Play Protect’s checks and responses in its Play Protect help page. Follow its warning if it flags an app rather than dismissing it without review.

Investigate battery drain separately
Battery drain can have several causes, and drain alone does not prove malware or battery failure. Open your phone’s battery settings and review which apps are using the most power. Where available, restrict an app with unusually high use and consider general battery-saving controls such as Adaptive Battery. Settings and available options differ by device; Android’s battery guidance directs users to manufacturer support for device-specific help.

If you suspect malware, review the security page for your Google Account and address any issues it identifies. If suspicious behavior continues after checking notifications, removing likely apps, scanning, and updating, contact your phone manufacturer for device-specific instructions. Google says a reset may be needed if malware signs persist.

A factory reset removes data from the phone. Treat it as an escalation step: consider how to preserve data you need and follow the manufacturer’s instructions before resetting. Google’s malware guidance covers removal and escalation options.
