Save the original itinerary and the airline’s change notice, then compare the new flight with your needs before accepting a refund or rebooking. Your options depend on the route, carrier, size and type of change, when you were notified, and whether you still want to travel. A schedule change does not automatically mean you are owed compensation.
What should I do first?
- Keep the records. Save your original confirmation, ticket receipt, booking reference, change notice and revised itinerary. Note when the airline notified you, and keep screenshots showing any changes to times, dates, airports, connections or cabin.
- Compare the full trip. Check departure and arrival times and dates, airports, connection count and length, operating carrier, cabin, and whether the new itinerary still meets any accessibility needs. Review connecting flights and ground arrangements too.
- Contact the airline or booking agent. Ask what alternatives are available and whether the carrier considers the change significant or the original flight cancelled. If an agent issued your ticket, contact it as well. For US bookings made through an online travel agency or other agent, the Department of Transportation advises contacting the agent about a refund first (US DOT: Buying a Ticket).
- Choose a remedy only after comparing it. If you still need to travel, ask about rerouting before requesting or accepting a refund. In the UK, the CAA says choosing a refund means you will not also be entitled to rerouting or care under its stated options (UK CAA: Consumer travel advice – Summer 2026).
- Get the response in writing. If the answer is unclear, ask which rule and option the airline or agent is applying. Record names, dates and case numbers. If a covered claim is rejected, use the appropriate national regulator or dispute channel; the European Commission links to national enforcement bodies (European Commission: Air passenger rights).
Am I entitled to a refund?
It depends on the law that applies to your trip and the exact change. Refund rights are not the same everywhere, and a refund is different from rerouting or compensation. The United States, United Kingdom and European Union each have distinct rules; do not apply one region’s thresholds to a different itinerary.

United States
Under current US DOT guidance, you are entitled to a ticket-price refund if the airline significantly changes or delays your flight and you choose not to travel or accept a credit, voucher, rebooking or other alternative compensation. DOT examples include a departure at least 3 hours earlier or arrival at least 3 hours later on a domestic itinerary; a departure at least 6 hours earlier or arrival at least 6 hours later on an international itinerary; a different origin or destination airport; more connection points; a downgrade; and specified accessibility-related changes for travelers with disabilities. These are DOT criteria, not universal rules for flights elsewhere. Check the agency’s full current guidance against your itinerary (US DOT: Refunds).
For qualifying direct airline purchases, DOT says the airline must automatically refund the consumer if they do not accept the changed flight or an alternative. Its automatic-refund guidance gives deadlines of 7 business days for credit-card payments and 20 calendar days for other payment types. A separate DOT ticket-buying page explains that the 24-hour cancellation/refund requirement does not apply to bookings through online travel agencies and other agents, and advises consumers to contact the agent directly about a refund first (US DOT: Buying a Ticket). Keep an eye on airline emails, texts and app alerts.

United Kingdom
For flights covered by UK passenger-rights legislation, CAA guidance describes three options after cancellation: a refund, rerouting at the earliest opportunity, or rerouting at a later date convenient to you, subject to availability. The CAA cautions that committing to one option may make it impossible to switch later, and specifically says a passenger who chooses a refund will not also be entitled to rerouting or care. Coverage depends on the route and carrier, so a UK connection alone does not establish that these rights apply (UK CAA: Consumer travel advice – Summer 2026).
European Union
In cancellation cases covered by Regulation (EC) No 261/2004, Article 8 provides a choice between reimbursement for the relevant unused journey, rerouting at the earliest opportunity, or rerouting later at the passenger’s convenience subject to available seats. In specified circumstances, reimbursement can also include a return flight to the first departure point (Regulation (EC) No 261/2004).

Official EU guidance says a cancellation includes abandoning the original schedule in favour of another scheduled flight, and bringing departure forward by more than 1 hour. Cancellation compensation is a separate question: notice timing, the proposed rerouting, distance and extraordinary circumstances can affect eligibility. A changed schedule alone does not establish that compensation is due (EU: Air passenger rights).

| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Departure and arrival times, including date changes | The size and direction of a change may affect refund rights. US DOT lists specific timing thresholds, while EU guidance treats some earlier departures as cancellations. |
| Origin or destination airport | A different airport is among the US DOT’s significant-change examples. EU rules also address transport costs from an alternative airport offered by the airline. |
| Connections and operating carrier | More connection points can meet a US significant-change criterion. The operating carrier and route also help identify which passenger-rights rules apply. |
| Cabin and accessibility | A downgrade is a US DOT example of a significant change, and specific accessibility-related changes have additional refund criteria. |
| Whether you still need to travel | A refund ends the booking, while rerouting preserves travel. In the UK, choosing one option may foreclose the others. |
| Who sold or issued your ticket | A third-party booking can affect who handles the practical refund request, particularly under US DOT guidance. |
| Notice date and resulting arrival delay | These may matter to separate compensation eligibility under EU cancellation rules. |
What if the airline offers to rebook me?
Compare the proposed replacement with the original trip and your actual needs: arrival time, airport, connections, carrier, cabin and accessibility. Ask whether another itinerary is available if the offer does not work. If you would rather not travel, ask whether the change qualifies for a refund under the rules for your route and purchase channel. Do not assume that taking a rebooking and later seeking a refund are interchangeable choices.
