Choose a gaming PC by starting with the games you play and the monitor you use—not by picking the most impressive CPU or graphics-card name. Set a realistic total budget, identify the performance you want at your resolution and refresh rate, then compare complete systems for game performance, memory, storage, upgrade limits, and portability.
1. Set a performance target before shopping
Write down the games you expect to play, your monitor’s resolution and refresh rate, and the settings that matter to you. Decide whether you care about ray tracing or high graphics settings, and whether you need the computer to travel.

- Games: Check the minimum and recommended system requirements for your actual titles. Requirements are a starting point, not a promise of a particular frame rate.
- Resolution and refresh rate: A higher resolution or refresh-rate target generally demands more graphics performance. Match the graphics card to the display and games rather than buying by model tier alone. Intel’s prebuilt gaming PC guide recommends comparing the intended GPU with your monitor and game requirements.
- Settings and features: High visual settings and ray tracing can raise the graphics workload. If you prioritize competitive play and high frame rates, CPU capability can also matter more.
- Mobility: Decide whether the system will stay at one desk or needs to move between locations. That choice can point toward a desktop or laptop before you compare individual configurations.
For a prebuilt gaming PC, look for performance evidence in the games and settings you care about. A component label by itself does not establish how a complete system performs.

- POWERHOUSE 8-CORE GAMING PERFORMANCE — Driven by the AMD Ryzen 7 8700F with 8 cores and 16 threads, boosting up to 5.0 GHz for smooth, responsive gameplay and the ability to handle AAA titles, streaming, and background tasks all at once
- NEXT-GEN BLACKWELL ARCHITECTURE — The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 is powered by NVIDIA's cutting-edge Blackwell GPU architecture, delivering a massive generational leap in rasterization and ray tracing performance so you can experience your games the way they were meant to be played.
- Simplistic Design: Enjoy the latest generation of Windows 11 Home for your everyday needs. *MSI recommends Windows 11 Pro for business use.
- Cool While Gaming: In conjunction with an ARGB fan Air Cooler, the Codex R2 features four system cooling fans; three in the front and one in the rear to pull in cool air and push heat out of the PC.
- Turn on the Bright Lights: With the built-in RGB lighting, take your gaming experience to the next level by pressing the MSI LED button to cycle through lighting options. Customize lighting even further with MSI Center software.
Prioritize out-of-box gaming performance before paying extra for optional memory or storage upgrades. Intel’s budget gaming PC guide makes that general recommendation; the right allocation depends on the system and market. Compare total costs for systems available in your region rather than treating one budget split as universal.
3. Compare GPU and CPU as a pair
Graphics card: fit it to your games and display
The GPU is central to graphics performance, particularly as resolution and visual demands rise. HP’s 2026 hardware guide calls the GPU the most important gaming component and suggests allocating around 35–40% of a build budget to it. That is HP’s general recommendation, not a tested rule for every PC or budget.
HP also characterizes entry-level performance as 1080p at 60+ FPS for most AAA titles. Treat that as HP’s tier description, not a guarantee: results depend on the exact game, graphics settings, and system configuration.

Processor: avoid an unbalanced system
The CPU handles work beyond rendering graphics and can become more important when you are pursuing high frame rates or playing competitive titles. Compare the processor and GPU together; a higher-tier name on one part does not by itself make the whole PC a better fit. Corsair’s component explainer describes the different roles of CPU, GPU, and RAM, but it is not an independent benchmark comparison.
4. Check RAM and storage for capacity and expansion
Memory
HP and Intel use 16GB as a gaming starting point in their buying guidance. HP’s 2026 hardware guide specifies at least 16GB DDR5 in its general starting-spec advice; Intel’s prebuilt guide calls 16GB a starting point and 32GB ideal for several concurrent applications. HP’s prebuilt guide recommends 32GB for streaming or heavy multitasking. These are vendor recommendations, not guarantees of compatibility or performance for every game and system.
Check the exact PC’s memory type, installed configuration, supported capacity, and available slots before assuming you can add RAM later.

- Processor specifications: Adopting AMD Ryzen 5 5600 processor, with a basic clock speed of 3.5GHz and a turbo frequency of 4.4GHz, it can achieve fast response computing performance
- Graphics Card: Features GeForce RTX 3050 graphics card with 6GB dedicated video memory for gaming and multimedia applications
- Memory configuration: Equipped with 32GB DDR4 RAM (16GB * 2), providing sufficient memory capacity for multitasking and demanding applications
- Gaming Performance: Designed to handle modern gaming titles and graphics-intensive tasks with smooth frame rates and visual quality
- Desktop System: Complete gaming desktop computer system ready for setup and use out of the box
Storage
HP recommends a fast NVMe SSD and names 512GB or more in its general hardware guide, while its entry-level desktop example specifies 1TB. Those figures come from different HP guidance contexts, not a single universal capacity threshold. Consider how many games you plan to keep installed and whether the system has a supported free M.2 slot or another straightforward storage expansion path.

Do not assume a desktop is upgradeable simply because it is a desktop. Intel notes that upgrade possibilities depend on the particular configuration: “You can usually upgrade components like RAM and storage later, and possibly even your GPU, depending on the configuration of your desktop.” The statement is from Intel’s Finding the Right Budget Gaming PC guide.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Choose desktop or laptop based on where you play
A desktop is a natural fit for a fixed setup and can offer component-upgrade options, while a laptop makes more sense when portability, multiple locations, or a single work, school, and gaming device matters. These are broad use-case distinctions, not proof that one format always delivers better value. HP’s prebuilt PC buying guide outlines these considerations.
For a fair value comparison, compare complete systems sold in the same market at similar total prices, and check their performance in your intended games. Include the display and peripherals you would need with a desktop, and assess whether a laptop’s built-in screen and portability meet your needs.

7. Compare shortlisted PCs on the same criteria
Once you have a target and a budget, compare each complete configuration rather than ranking systems by one component name.
| What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| Game performance | Results for your games at your intended resolution and settings; note whether the figures are measured or a manufacturer’s estimate. |
| Frame rate and display | Whether performance suits your monitor’s refresh rate and resolution. |
| CPU and GPU balance | The capabilities of both parts and whether the intended workload emphasizes graphics quality or high frame rates. |
| Memory and storage | Installed capacity, type, and available expansion options. |
| Upgrade compatibility | Power, physical clearance, cooling, motherboard support, and standard versus proprietary parts. |
| Total cost | System plus any display or peripherals you need, using prices available in your region. |
| Form factor and support | Desktop flexibility versus laptop mobility, as well as the warranty and support terms for the exact model. |
Current prices, stock, and benchmark results vary by region and change over time. Verify them for the exact model and market before deciding.
