What to Do If an AI Security Tool Exposes Secrets or Gives Unsafe Exploit Guidance

An unsafe AI exploit suggestion does not prove compromise. Stop the workflow, determine what data and permissions were involved, and treat potentially exposed credentials as compromised until assessed.

Stop the risky workflow, do not run the suggested exploit, and treat any credential that may have left a trusted boundary as exposed until you have checked it. An unsafe answer alone does not prove a system was compromised. The response depends on what the tool could access, where sensitive data went, and whether the tool or anyone else actually used it.

What should you do first?

  1. Pause the affected workflow. Stop using the tool for sensitive work. If it can run commands, edit files, call APIs, or reach external services, disable or restrict those capabilities while you assess the incident. Do not execute an exploit suggestion just because an AI produced it.
  2. Preserve relevant evidence safely. Keep the prompts, outputs, timestamps, product and version details, access records, and available logs in an approved, access-controlled location. If you can do so safely under your incident process, preserve relevant records before routine cleanup. Redact credentials from ordinary tickets, email, and reports.
  3. Revoke or rotate credentials that may have been exposed. Use the provider’s trusted control panel or an internal administrator—not the AI conversation or an unprotected ticket. Review the credential’s permissions and access history, and narrow its scope or lifetime where supported.
  4. Escalate through your organization’s incident process. Bring in security and, where the facts warrant it, privacy, legal, repository, or service owners. NIST SP 800-61 Rev. 3, published in April 2025, supersedes Rev. 2 and integrates incident-response guidance throughout cybersecurity risk management. It is a framework, not a universal legal notification timetable.

Is this an unsafe answer, a secret exposure, or a compromise?

Separate what the tool said from what it could see and do. An exploit recommendation is not evidence that it ran. A secret in a prompt, response, log, request trace, or connected service may still have crossed a trust boundary, even if you have not found evidence of misuse.

What you can establish What it indicates What to examine
The tool returned unsafe exploit guidance, but there is no known sensitive data exposure or execution. An output-safety issue; the answer alone does not establish compromise. Whether the guidance was acted on, whether the tool had execution or service access, and how to report the product issue safely.
A credential or other sensitive content appeared in a prompt, output, log, or trace, or was transmitted to a provider or another service. A possible exposure. Treat a credential as compromised until you assess its scope and use. Where the information went, who or what could access it, whether the credential is active or privileged, and access history.
Records show a credential was used, data accessed or exported, or a system modified. Evidence of activity beyond an unsafe suggestion or potential disclosure; follow your incident-response process. Which accounts, repositories, data, and connected services were affected, and what actions occurred.
Logs or audit records are unavailable or incomplete. You may not be able to establish the boundary crossed or rule out use from available evidence. Other available identity, application, agent, and provider records, with security or service owners.

Assess five dimensions together: whether sensitive content stayed local or reached a provider, log, user, or service; the credential’s scope and privileges; the agent’s read, write, execution, and connected-service permissions; evidence of execution, access, modification, or exfiltration; and whether available records are complete enough to establish events. These are investigation dimensions, not a published score or universal severity matrix. OWASP’s AI coding-assistant and agent guidance describes risks including context leakage, tool abuse, command execution, and data exfiltration; the risks apply only insofar as they match the product’s architecture and configuration.

How do you investigate where the secret went?

Record the tool name and version, the relevant time range, integrations and permissions in use, and what actions were taken. Preserve the relevant inputs and outputs in a controlled location, with credentials redacted from working copies. Then review the records your deployment makes available:

Yubico - Security Key C NFC - Basic Compatibility - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-C or NFC, FIDO Certified
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
  • TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
  • Tool context: What files, project structure, terminal output, prompts, or other context could it read? OWASP warns that .gitignore does not prevent an AI tool from reading files from the filesystem.
  • Data path: Did the sensitive content remain in local context, go to a model provider, appear in a response, or enter a log, request trace, or telemetry system?
  • Authority and actions: Could the tool read, modify, or execute against a repository, call APIs, or use connected accounts? Do records show any such action?
  • Identity and impact: Which credential, account, repository, data, or connected service could be affected? Check available identity, application, agent, and provider access records for use or changes.

The exact records depend on the product and deployment. OWASP’s MCP Top 10 notes limited telemetry as an incident-response challenge for MCP systems; that is a system-specific caution, not proof that a particular product was compromised.

How should you handle a possibly exposed credential?

Revoke or rotate it through the service that issued it or an authorized administrator. Do not paste it into a chat, public issue, ordinary support request, or incident report. Check its access history and permissions, and replace it with a narrower or shorter-lived credential where the service supports that approach. OWASP’s MCP guidance identifies hard-coded credentials, long-lived tokens, and secrets in model memory or protocol logs as risks, and recommends short-lived, scoped credentials and secret-scanning controls.

Keep evidence needed for the investigation in the approved controlled location; use redacted copies for routine communications. Secret exposure can involve logs or traces as well as visible AI responses, so checking only the conversation may not establish where the information went.

How do you report the unsafe guidance or product flaw?

Use the vendor’s published security contact or vulnerability disclosure policy. Describe the affected product and version, the security impact, safe reproduction conditions, and containment already performed. Share only redacted evidence through the approved channel; do not include live secrets in ordinary email, an issue tracker, or a public report. Coordinate disclosure through the vendor’s process unless an applicable policy or authority directs otherwise.

NIST SP 800-216, published in May 2023, recommends formalizing how vulnerability reports are accepted, assessed, and managed, and how mitigation or remediation is communicated. It states: “Receiving reports on suspected security vulnerabilities in information systems is one of the best ways for developers and services to become aware of issues.” CISA’s disclosure-policy announcement concerns federal civilian agencies and their internet-accessible systems; it is not a universal private-sector rule.
