Change the breached password promptly, then update any other account where you reused it or a similar password. Use a unique password for each account, turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA) for important accounts, and match identity-protection steps to the information exposed. For U.S. incidents, the FTC’s data-breach guidance points to a tailored checklist.
1. Change the exposed password and any reused passwords
Start with the account named in the breach notice. Change its password using the service’s official website or app—not a link in an unexpected message. If you used that password, or a similar one, on other services, change those passwords too. Stolen credentials may be tried on other accounts. The FTC advises people affected by a breach to change passwords right away.

Give every account its own password. A password manager can help generate and keep track of unique, complex passwords; the FTC discusses this option in its guide to creating strong passwords. You do not need to change unrelated passwords if they were not reused and there is no indication they were exposed.

2. Turn on MFA for accounts that matter most
MFA requires another proof of identity in addition to a password. Prioritize email and financial accounts, along with credit-card, payment, social-media, and tax-filing accounts. Email deserves early attention because it often serves as the recovery route for other services. Enable MFA in each provider’s security settings and keep recovery details current.

Available methods vary by service. The FTC describes security keys, authenticator apps, and one-time codes in its two-factor authentication guide. It identifies security keys as the strongest method among those options; that is the FTC’s general guidance, not a product comparison. Choose a method the account supports and make sure you understand how to recover access if you lose the device or key.
3. Respond promptly to signs of account takeover
Being unable to log in or receiving an unexpected notice that your username or password changed can indicate someone else has accessed an account. Use the provider’s official recovery process rather than links in suspicious messages. The FTC provides steps for recovering a hacked email or social-media account.

- Enable two-factor authentication.
- Check that the recovery email address and phone number are yours, then inspect the account for activity you do not recognize.
4. Let the exposed information guide identity-protection steps
Find out what the company says was exposed; a breach does not automatically mean every kind of personal information was involved. The FTC’s What To Do After a Data Breach guide directs U.S. consumers to IdentityTheft.gov/databreach for a checklist tailored to the exposed information. Follow the incident-specific notice and use the company’s official site or app if you need to confirm account details.
If Social Security information was exposed, the FTC recommends obtaining free credit reports and checking for accounts you do not recognize. If you suspect identity theft, report it at IdentityTheft.gov and follow the recovery plan provided there.

5. Choose between a credit freeze and a fraud alert
For U.S. consumers concerned about someone opening credit in their name, both a freeze and a fraud alert are free, but they work differently. The FTC explains the options in its guide to credit freezes and fraud alerts.
| Option | What it does | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Credit freeze | Blocks potential creditors from accessing your credit report, which can help prevent new credit accounts. A freeze does not affect your credit score. | Place it with all three nationwide credit bureaus. You may need to lift it when a lender needs to check your report. Placing and lifting a freeze are free. |
| Fraud alert | Asks lenders to verify your identity before granting credit. | It is free; see the FTC’s guidance for details on choosing and placing an alert. |
6. Review any breach-related services carefully
If the affected company offers credit monitoring or identity-theft insurance, the FTC advises considering those services. An offer is not guaranteed for every breach, and the guidance does not make a paid plan necessary. Check the terms and use only the company’s official contact details to confirm what is included.
