Pause, take the discrepancy to your care team, and ask how the recommendation applies to your health history. AI can be useful for preparing questions, but it is not a substitute for a clinician’s judgment. If you may be having an emergency, seek immediate medical help rather than asking AI what to do.
What to do first
- Pause before acting. Don’t start, stop, or change medication or another part of your treatment solely because a chatbot recommended it. AI can give incorrect information, miss important details, and lack access to your full medical history. The American Medical Association (AMA) advises patients to check AI-generated health information with a doctor and talk to a doctor before making health decisions or trying something new. - Contact the clinician who knows your case. Explain what the chatbot suggested, which part conflicts with the advice you received, and what you need clarified. Ask the clinician to explain the reasoning and how your history, test results, or other circumstances affect the plan.
- Decide what to do with your care team. Follow up on the specific question before making a treatment change. If you cannot reach your clinician and are unsure what to do next, contact the practice’s care team or an appropriate healthcare professional rather than relying on the chatbot.
How to discuss the disagreement with your doctor
Bring the chatbot’s answer or a short summary, and point to the exact recommendation that concerns you. You can ask:

- “What questions should I ask my doctor to better understand this situation?”
- “How does your recommendation account for my medical history and test results?”
- “Is there a particular risk or reason I should not follow the chatbot’s suggestion?”
- “What should I do if I still have concerns or cannot reach you before my next dose or appointment?”
The AMA recommends that clinicians explain the rationale for consultations, opinions, findings, and recommendations clearly. A disagreement is a reason to seek that explanation—not proof that either answer is right or wrong on its own. If it helps, you can ask a chatbot to translate unfamiliar medical terms into plain language or help organize questions for your appointment. The AMA’s patient guidance cautions against relying on AI for diagnosis or treatment decisions. It also warns that chatbot privacy protections may differ from those of a physician’s practice. Before entering information, consider whether the chatbot needs it. Avoid sharing identifying or sensitive health details unless you understand how that particular service handles them. When to seek a second opinion
If you still have concerns after discussing the recommendation with your clinician, you may seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified, licensed healthcare professional. A second opinion is a clinical consultation, not a chatbot response. When considering one, check:

- Whether the professional has relevant expertise for your condition or question.
- Whether they can review the relevant medical records and test results.
- Whether your health plan requires a referral or limits which professionals you can see.
- What you may have to pay out of pocket.
Plan rules can affect access and costs, so check them before arranging a consultation. In an emergency, do not ask AI what to do
If you think you or someone else may be experiencing a medical emergency, seek immediate medical help. Use the emergency services available where you are or go to an emergency department. The right emergency contact depends on your location; do not wait for a chatbot response or use AI to decide whether urgent symptoms need care. The AMA specifically cautions against using AI tools in emergencies. Review the AMA’s patient guidance on AI and health questions.

What the disagreement can—and cannot—tell you
A chatbot’s answer may help you identify a question to raise, but it does not establish that your doctor’s recommendation is mistaken or that the chatbot’s suggestion fits your situation. The AMA describes AI as augmenting rather than replacing clinical decision-making and physician responsibility; that is professional guidance about clinical use, not an individual treatment instruction. Read the AMA’s principles for augmented intelligence. The guidance cited here provides qualitative cautions, not a quantified risk estimate for cases where AI advice conflicts with a doctor’s recommendation.
