Treat the response as a question to discuss, not a diagnosis to follow. Don’t use a chatbot to decide what to do in an emergency or change prescribed treatment solely because an AI disagrees.
What to do when an AI answer disagrees with your doctor
- Save the exact response. Keep a copy of what the AI said and, if useful, the question you asked and information you entered. A copied chatbot answer is not a medical record, and you should not assume the tool retained your relevant health history.
- Raise the disagreement directly. You could say: “I asked an AI tool about this, and it suggested something different from what we discussed. Can you explain why your assessment fits my situation and what information would change the plan?” Ask what evidence supports the diagnosis, what remains uncertain, what to watch for and when to follow up.
- Share the context, not just the AI’s conclusion. Bring relevant symptoms and when they began, recent test results, your current medication list, and the specific AI response. Your clinician can determine which details matter. The AMA says AI output should be considered alongside clinical context, patient needs and values; the FDA’s guidance for certain clinical decision-support functions also focuses on patient-specific information and what is known or unknown. These are not a way to validate a consumer chatbot’s answer.
- Confirm the plan before you leave. Make sure you understand what to do next, what should prompt follow-up and whom to contact with questions. Do not start, stop or change a prescribed treatment solely because of a chatbot response; ask the prescriber or another qualified clinician how to proceed.
- Ask about another clinician’s review if the concern remains unresolved. You can ask your doctor whether an additional opinion makes sense and how to arrange it. If you pursue one, consider the reviewer’s relevant specialty and qualifications, whether they can access your records and test results, timing, and cost or insurance coverage.
Should you trust your doctor or the AI?
A fluent, confident answer is not proof that an AI is right. The World Health Organization warns that large language models can produce plausible responses that are completely wrong or contain serious health errors. A general-purpose tool may also lack the context needed to assess an individual patient. That is why the disagreement is best used to prompt a conversation with a clinician who can evaluate your circumstances—not as a contest in which confidence decides the winner.

“AI diagnosis” can refer to different products and systems. WHO’s 2025 guidance describes large multimodal models that can accept multiple types of input and generate varied outputs, but notes that broad general-purpose capability has not been proven. Neither a chatbot’s label nor its ability to discuss health establishes that it has been evaluated for your specific condition.

When not to ask a chatbot
For a medical emergency or rapidly worsening situation, contact local emergency services or seek urgent medical care instead of asking a chatbot what to do. The American Medical Association says AI chatbots are not for medical emergencies and are not replacements for doctors.

Why the AI and clinician may differ
- The answer can sound more certain than it is. WHO warns that language models can generate convincing but erroneous health information.
- The tool may not have the relevant context. Its response may not account for your full history, examination, test results, circumstances or values. Sharing an output lets your clinician assess it in that context; it does not establish which answer is correct by itself.
- Health information raises privacy concerns. WHO and the AMA identify risks around sensitive information shared with AI systems. Be cautious about entering personal health details into a chatbot.
The FDA’s clinical decision-support guidance concerns how certain software functions are assessed under U.S. law; it is not a consumer test of whether a chatbot’s diagnosis is correct. For certain clinician-support functions, software should not replace or direct a health professional’s judgment. That framework should not be stretched into a claim that all health AI is either unregulated or unsafe.
What an additional opinion can—and cannot—settle
If you and your clinician decide another review is appropriate, compare practical factors such as relevant specialty, qualifications, access to records and test results, timing, and cost or insurance coverage. An additional opinion is a review by another qualified human clinician; the existence of a conflicting AI answer alone does not establish that one is necessary.
