Neither option is available everywhere or automatically free. In the U.S., the rules depend on whether the person is in federal or state custody and on the specific facility, so confirm its current policy before making plans.
How to compare in-person and video visits
Start with the exact facility where the person is held. State and local visiting options vary, according to USAGov’s visiting guidance. Prison rules are not interchangeable with jail rules, and federal rules are not nationwide defaults for state facilities.

| What to compare | In-person visit | Video visit |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Check visitor approval, location, entry requirements, and the facility’s current schedule. | Confirm that the facility offers remote visits and that you are eligible to use them. |
| Total cost | Include transportation and other trip expenses. The Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) says it does not reimburse visitor transportation. | Check the fee, billing unit, payment timing, and any credit or refund terms for the service used. |
| Scheduling | Facility policies determine visiting days and hours, visit length, visitor limits, and any advance booking. | Check approval, booking windows, time zone, visit length, platform, and sign-in instructions. |
| Preparation | Plan how to get there and follow the facility’s identification, clothing, screening, and belongings rules. | You may avoid the trip, but remote systems can require an account, internet access, a compatible device, and prepayment. |
| Conduct and privacy | Follow facility conduct rules and any limits on contact. | Do not assume the call is private. Policies differ; Missouri, for example, says video visits are recorded and monitored. |
For federal prisons, the BOP recommends confirming the institution, obtaining approval, reading its rules, and checking the schedule and route. Its federal guidance describes a minimum of four hours of visiting per month for federal inmates, but wardens may restrict visit length or visitor numbers to avoid overcrowding. That is not a national rule for state facilities.

| Department | Published cost example | Billing details |
|---|---|---|
| Missouri Department of Corrections | $6.90 per 30-minute session, effective July 1, 2026. | Unused time is credited at $0.23 per minute if a session ends early. The department says the credit typically reaches the Securus account within 48 hours. See Missouri’s video-visitation fee information. |
| Michigan Department of Corrections | $0.16 per minute, for up to 20 minutes; current page checked October 4, 2026. | A $3.20 advance hold is adjusted to the call length, and the visit must be prepaid. The video page is dated May 15, 2025; confirm billing terms before scheduling. See Michigan’s video-visitation page. |
| Indiana Department of Correction | No single price is stated on the department overview. | Cost varies by facility, duration, and visit type; some visits may be free. Available prices appear during scheduling. See Indiana’s visitation guidance. |
These are state-specific examples, not national rates or a basis for a national average. In-person visits also have travel costs, and the BOP says the government does not reimburse visitors for transportation.
Do you need approval before visiting?
Often, yes. The exact approval process depends on the correctional authority and facility. Some systems require an application or placement on an approved visitor list before you can schedule. If you are unsure whether approval is complete, contact the facility rather than making a trip or paying for a remote appointment.
- Identify the exact facility and custody system. Confirm the person’s current institution and whether it is federal or state custody.
- Check visitor eligibility and approval. Find out whether you must apply, be added to an approved list, or create an account before booking.
- Read the facility’s current rules and schedule. A statewide overview may not give an individual institution’s hours or entry requirements.
- Confirm the appointment or visit details. Check the day, local time, duration, visitor limits, and any sign-in or arrival instructions.
The BOP advises visitors to call the institution if approval is uncertain and to use the specific institution’s visiting regulations. Rhode Island likewise advises checking requirements and schedules before each visit; its Department of Corrections notes that “Each facility’s schedule is different.” See Rhode Island’s visitation page.

What to expect at an in-person prison visit
Expect facility-specific requirements for identity checks, clothing, screening, conduct, and permitted belongings. Read the institution’s current policy before leaving home. A visitor who does not meet the rules may be denied entry, and a visit can be ended for violations.

- Vegas-style 5-reel slot machine
- 2 Bonus Rounds (Black Jack and Scratch Off)
- 9 Pay lines
- Chinese Dragon theme with a live cloud background
- 3D rendered Coin Shower and Buddha
- Bring only identification and paperwork the facility accepts, including any required documents for children.
- Check clothing requirements and screening procedures in advance.
- Confirm exactly what belongings are allowed. Rhode Island, for example, describes identification and screening requirements and allows limited change in a clear bag; this is not a nationwide rule.
- Plan the route and transportation. The BOP states: “Unfortunately, there is no Government payment or reimbursement for transportation.”
Do not assume that an in-person visit permits physical contact, or that all visits have the same length. Those details are governed by the facility’s rules and operational restrictions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you visit someone in prison by video from home?
Only if the specific facility offers remote visits and you meet its requirements. Video is not available everywhere. Even when it is, you may need approval, an account, a scheduled appointment, payment, and a supported device with a reliable internet connection.
- Confirm the facility offers at-home video visits. Indiana says availability and service options vary by facility.
- Check who must be approved and how booking works. Use the facility’s named platform and verify its booking window, time zone, and any account requirements.
- Check device, connection, and price before booking. Indiana lists a PC, laptop, or Android mobile device for at-home visits. Missouri requires visitor-provided equipment and internet. Use the facility’s current compatibility instructions; do not assume a particular device will work.
- Sign in early and follow the rules. Indiana recommends signing in 15 minutes before an at-home appointment. Missouri says video visits follow in-person dress and conduct rules, are recorded and monitored, and may be ended for violations.
Indiana’s department guidance puts it plainly: “Visitation costs vary by correctional facility and visitation duration.” Its available prices are shown during scheduling, so check the amount and payment terms before confirming.
Which visit type should you choose?
Choose based on what the facility actually offers and what you can reliably arrange. An in-person visit may make sense when travel is manageable and the schedule and entry rules work for you. Video may reduce travel, but it can add platform, device, connection, scheduling, or fee requirements. Compare the total practical cost and the actual appointment conditions rather than assuming one format is always cheaper or easier.
