First, find out whether your child acted on the chatbot’s advice, is about to act, or is in immediate danger. If they are, stay with them and contact your local emergency or crisis service; involve a trusted adult or qualified professional. If there is no immediate danger, listen without blame, verify consequential advice with an appropriate human, report the output to the service, and check what personal information your child shared.
Is your child in immediate danger?
Ask plainly and calmly what happened: what the chatbot said, whether your child followed any of it, and whether they plan to do so now. If they have already taken a dangerous action, may harm themselves or someone else, or face an immediate threat, get help now rather than trying to resolve the situation through the chatbot or a platform report. Contact the emergency or crisis service appropriate to your location and involve a trusted adult or qualified professional. Emergency numbers and safeguarding routes differ by country and region, so use local services rather than assuming one number or reporting channel applies everywhere.

If the risk is serious but not immediate, arrange prompt help from someone qualified for the issue: for example, a clinician for health or mental-health advice, or a school safeguarding lead or child-protection service when a child’s safety may be at risk. A chatbot response is not a substitute for urgent medical, mental-health, or safeguarding guidance.
How should you talk with your child?
Thank them for telling you. Avoid scolding, ridicule, or treating the incident as proof that they were foolish. A calm response makes it easier for them to explain what they saw and understood.

Use open, age-appropriate questions, such as:
- “Can you show or tell me what it said?”
- “What did you think it meant?”
- “Did you do anything because of it, or were you thinking about doing it?”
- “Did you share anything about yourself or anyone else?”
UNICEF USA’s February 2026 parent guidance recommends gentle questions rather than criticism when an interaction seems unhealthy. If it feels appropriate, review the answer together and ask which parts seem helpful, confusing, or wrong. Keep the focus on what the advice said and how it affected your child—not on blaming them for using a chatbot.
How should you respond to the kind of advice your child received?
The right next step depends on the danger, the subject, and where you live. This guide can help you choose whom to involve; it is not a substitute for local emergency or professional advice.

NCMEC’s route is specific to the United States and sexual exploitation; it is not a general hotline for every harmful answer. Elsewhere, use local child-protection and law-enforcement channels when exploitation is involved.

How do you verify the chatbot’s advice?
Treat the answer as fallible, particularly when it makes a consequential claim about health, mental health, safety, or another person’s welfare. Confirm it with an appropriate qualified person rather than asking the same chatbot to validate itself. If advice could lead to an urgent or dangerous action, get professional help before acting on it.
UNICEF’s December 2025 Guidance on AI and children, version 3.0, warns about risks that include harmful or illegal content and AI companions. UNICEF’s 2025 guidance also notes that some chatbots used for mental-health support have produced dangerous crisis responses and inappropriate clinical responses. An answer that sounds confident or caring is not proof that it is reliable.
UNICEF’s older Safer Chatbots resource, from the 2021 era and focused on chatbots not powered by AI, described how many chatbots were not set up to detect and respond to distress. That earlier material helps explain why distress detection and referral safeguards matter, but it should not be taken as a current assessment of every generative-AI chatbot.

How do you report the output and protect your child’s privacy?
Use the service’s own reporting mechanism to flag the harmful response or a privacy concern. The exact controls differ by service; use the reporting or safety options available in the product your child used rather than assuming every chatbot has the same process.
Before sharing details in a report, consider whether they include your child’s name, school, location, contact details, health information, or intimate images. Review the chatbot account’s privacy settings and what information your child entered. Avoid reposting or forwarding sensitive material to friends, social media, or unrelated services. If you need to preserve the conversation to explain what happened, keep it private and share it only with people or agencies who need it to help.
UNICEF’s June 2026 recommendations for businesses call for accessible ways to report harmful outputs and privacy concerns, privacy safeguards, and crisis protocols that interrupt high-risk conversations and direct users to context-specific support. These are recommendations to companies, not a universal legal checklist for parents or a guarantee that a particular service has implemented them.

What should you watch for afterward?
Check in over time, especially if your child keeps returning to the chatbot or seems distressed by the interaction. UNICEF USA identifies possible warning signs including secrecy, anxiety, distress when stopping, relying on AI for emotional support instead of trusted people, and chatbot use displacing sleep, school, friends, or hobbies.
One incident alone does not establish addiction or a mental-health diagnosis. If you notice persistent distress, changes in daily life, or a pattern of reliance that worries you, keep the conversation open, set simple boundaries together, and seek appropriate professional support. UNICEF USA’s February 2026 guidance recommends regular check-ins and gentle open questions when a child’s use seems worrying.

Caregivers can help a child assess a response and get support, but families cannot solve unsafe system design through supervision alone. UNICEF’s December 2025 child-centred AI guidance sets out ten requirements, including safety, privacy, fairness, transparency and accountability, children’s best interests and well-being, and preparation for AI. UNICEF’s June 2026 business recommendations also call for crisis protocols, reporting mechanisms, privacy safeguards, and parent or guardian tools.
In September 2025, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission announced an inquiry asking seven consumer-facing chatbot companies about how they assess possible effects on children and teens, limit use or potential negative effects, and inform parents and users. That was an inquiry to study the issue, not a finding that any named chatbot had caused harm. UNICEF also describes research involving 12,000 children and their parents or caregivers; the project page reports divides in access, usage, trust, and exposure to risks, but does not state a year. That figure is not an estimate of how many children receive harmful chatbot advice.
