A hijacked website does not, by itself, prove that your account or device was compromised. What to do next depends on whether you entered a password, payment details, or downloaded a file.
What should I do if a website I use was hacked?
- Stop interacting with the page. Don’t click its links, download files, or submit information. The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) advises visitors not to click links or enter details on a suspicious website. Report a scam website.
- Reach the service through a route you already trust. Type its known official address yourself or open its official app. If you need help, use support details from that trusted route—not a link in an unexpected email or text. The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) gives the same advice for contacting a company. FTC guidance on phishing scams.
- Decide what you exposed. If you only viewed the page, there is no evidence from that alone that your account or device was compromised. If you entered a password or payment details, follow the relevant steps below. If you downloaded a file or the device is behaving unusually, treat the device separately.
Is it safe to log in if a website has been hacked?
Don’t log in through the suspicious page. Until you can verify the site’s status through a trusted channel, avoid entering credentials there. If you need to use the service, navigate to its known official address or app and check its own security notices or contact support through that route. A familiar logo or web address alone is not a reason to trust a page that is behaving unexpectedly.

What if I already entered my password?
- Change it using the service’s official recovery or account settings. Start from the known official address or app; don’t use a recovery link from an unsolicited message.
- Change every reused copy. If you used that password on other services, give each account a different, unique password. A password manager can help create and store unique passwords; protect its master password carefully. The FTC provides guidance on password and account protection at Protect Your Personal Information From Hackers and Scammers.
- End other sessions and check account recovery details. Sign out all devices and apps where the service offers that option. Confirm that the recovery email address and phone number are yours, and review recent sign-ins or account changes if available.
- Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA). Use an authenticator app or security key if the service supports one. The FTC says, “The more secure types of two-factor authentication are an authenticator app or a security key.” Text or email codes may be the available option for some services; enable the strongest method the service offers.
Check your email account too
Email is especially important because it can be used to reset passwords for other accounts. If you entered your email password, secure that account promptly through its official route. Check for unfamiliar forwarding rules, messages in Sent or Deleted, and changes to recovery details. Secure any other account that shares the exposed password.

What if I entered payment information or personal details?
Payment details or unfamiliar transactions
Contact your bank, card issuer, or payment provider promptly using the phone number on your card, the official app, or another contact route you already know is genuine. Review recent statements and online-store accounts for unfamiliar activity. The NCSC recommends checking bank statements and contacting the bank directly using official details: its suspicious-website guidance.

Personal information or suspected identity theft
If you think personal information was exposed, use the official identity-theft or consumer-reporting service for your country. In the United States, the FTC directs people who suspect identity theft to IdentityTheft.gov. The right reporting steps depend on where you live and what information was involved.
Does a hijacked website mean my device has malware?
No. A website incident alone does not establish that malware reached your device. If you downloaded a file, opened an unexpected attachment, or your device is acting unusually, stop using it for banking, shopping, or entering passwords until it has been checked and restored. Get help through a trusted provider or the device maker’s official support. Be wary of unsolicited calls, pop-ups, or ads offering to clean your device: the FTC warns that purported security software can itself be malware. FTC guidance on recognizing and avoiding malware.

How do I report a hacked or fake website?
Reporting routes differ by country and by whether you are reporting a suspicious site, a financial scam, or a crime. In the UK, the NCSC accepts reports of suspicious websites; its reporting route is not a crime report. It directs victims of crime in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland to Report Fraud, and victims in Scotland to Police Scotland. Check the NCSC’s current instructions at Report a scam website. Elsewhere, use the relevant official national cybercrime or consumer-protection service.

Contain the incident and plan recovery
- Change compromised credentials and secure accounts that could be used to regain access.
- Disconnect devices suspected of malware from the network while they are assessed.
- Restore from backups that were not connected to the affected network, where appropriate, and apply current security updates.
- Determine whether personal information was accessed or exposed. If it may have been, assess notification duties based on your jurisdiction, the information involved, the likelihood of misuse, and potential harm. Consult appropriate legal, regulatory, and law-enforcement contacts for your circumstances.
- Keep customers informed as recovery proceeds. FTC small-business guidance covers recovery planning, backups, updates, and customer communication: Cybersecurity for Small Business.
How to make accounts harder to take over
Use a unique password for each account and enable 2FA wherever it is offered. When available, an authenticator app or security key is generally a stronger choice than a code sent by text or email, according to the FTC. A hardware security key is optional: check that both the account and your device support it, and understand how you will recover access if the key is lost. It can strengthen sign-in after recovery, but it does not repair a compromised website, restore a lost account, or determine whether your device is infected.
