How to Write Better Prompts for AI Game Generators

Better AI game prompts specify the output you want: a world, a playable game, a project edit, or an asset. Use concrete details and refine in small steps.

Write down the game or world you want the tool to produce, then describe its mechanics, visible details, and limits in concrete terms. The right prompt depends on the tool: an explorable-world generator, a text-to-game builder, and an assistant editing an existing project need different instructions. Start with a small playable idea, inspect the result, and refine one thing at a time.

First, identify what you want the generator to make

“AI game generator” can mean several different workflows. A prompt that helps create an explorable environment may not be the right prompt for a playable game or a change to an existing project.

Tool type What you are asking it to make What to emphasize
World generator, such as Google DeepMind’s experimental Project Genie An explorable world generated from text or image input Environment, character, movement, and how the world responds
Game generator, such as Roblox Build A basic playable game from a natural-language description Game form, core loop, controls, challenge, goal, and look
Project assistant, such as Roblox Studio Assistant An edit, script, behavior, or asset for an existing project Project object, requested behavior, boundaries, and how to test it
Asset generator An individual model or other game asset Shape, material, distinguishing features, reference, and editable properties

Google DeepMind describes Project Genie as an experimental research prototype, not a general-purpose game builder. Roblox describes Build as a way to generate a basic game starting point for further iteration. Neither description establishes one tool as best for every task.

How do I write a prompt for a playable game?

Lead with the game form and the player’s repeated action. Then explain what the player controls, what creates a challenge, and what counts as progress or success. Roblox Creator Hub’s Build documentation says, “The best results come from clear, specific descriptions.” Its examples include collecting coins to buy upgrades in a clicker and avoiding obstacles while collecting power-ups in a side-scroller.

  • Game form: Name a manageable type, such as a clicker, side-scroller, arcade dodger, collect-and-score game, or puzzle.
  • Core loop: Say what the player does repeatedly and what reward or progress follows.
  • Controls and challenge: Describe the input, obstacles, and what happens when the player fails.
  • Goal: Specify a level endpoint, score target, unlock, or other win condition.
  • Presentation: Add setting, character, visual style, and sound only where the tool supports them.
  • Scope: Ask for one short level or a small first version before adding secondary systems.

Adaptable example, not a tested prompt:

“Make a 2D side-scrolling game about a courier crossing a rainy city. The player moves left and right and jumps over puddles and barriers, collecting three parcels per level. Show the parcel count and a finish gate. Use a bright comic-book look with high-contrast silhouettes. Start with one short level.”

That prompt gives the generator a player action, challenge, collectible, visible progress, endpoint, and visual direction. Roblox currently documents Build as focused on 2D and 2.5D games, with simpler game types working best; a complex 3D game concept may fall outside that documented scope. See Roblox Creator Hub’s Build documentation for current capabilities and limitations.

How should I prompt an explorable-world generator?

Describe the environment and character separately, then connect them by stating how movement changes the world. Google DeepMind’s Genie prompting guide recommends describing the landscape, surfaces, style, important objects, environmental behavior, character identity, and movement. It also advises, “Keep your descriptions to-the-point. Short declarative sentences work well.”

  • Environment: Name the place, terrain, lighting, structures, objects, weather, and any visible motion.
  • Character: Describe appearance, capabilities, and how the character moves.
  • Interaction: Specify observable effects, such as footprints, splashes, moved objects, or cut grass.
  • Mood: Add sensory cues—light, sound, texture, and atmosphere—that support the scene.

Adaptable example, not a tested prompt:

“Environment: A compact island with black volcanic sand, wind-bent palms, and a ruined lighthouse at the north end. Dawn light and low sea mist. Waves push loose driftwood across the beach. Character: A small brass diving robot that walks slowly and leaves wet footprints. It can pick up driftwood and place it beside the lighthouse.”

If the interface offers a world sketch preview, use it to check composition before adding more detail. The Genie guide also describes text and image prompting, uploading an image, modifying the world sketch, and remixing prior worlds. Change one or two details per iteration so you can see what affected the result.

How should I prompt an assistant working inside my project?

Ground the request in something the assistant can identify in the open project. Name the object where possible, describe the behavior you want, state what must not change, and ask how to verify the result. For larger changes, ask for a plan before implementation and build in small, testable steps.

  1. Plan: State the feature and ask for a short implementation plan.
  2. Build: Approve or refine the plan, then implement one core part.
  3. Playtest: Run the project and check the feature’s expected behavior.
  4. Refine: Report a specific issue or request one targeted change.

Roblox’s Assistant development guide recommends a Plan > Build > Playtest > Refine workflow, with the core world and gameplay before secondary systems. Its development guide and Assistant tutorial cover working with project contents and testing generated code.

Adaptable example, not a tested prompt:

“On the part named CheckpointPad, add behavior so touching it saves the player’s current checkpoint. Do not change the part’s size or material. Show a short confirmation message when the checkpoint is saved. Tell me which script you changed and what I should test in play mode.”

For a model request, focus on the object rather than its background. Specify shape, material, age or style where relevant, and distinctive features. If the tool accepts reference images, Roblox’s prompt guide recommends a clear subject with good lighting, a simple background, and a useful three-quarter or isometric view when possible. For procedural models, name the properties that should remain editable and explain how parts should respond when their scale or count changes.

How do I revise a result that is wrong or incomplete?

When the first result misses the mark, diagnose what is wrong before rewriting the whole prompt. Add concrete mechanics or constraints when the output is too broad; when one detail is wrong, ask for a targeted edit. Roblox Build documents follow-up changes such as making coins larger or adding a timer.

  • The game is too vague: Add the player’s action, the obstacle or challenge, and a visible measure of progress.
  • One visual or gameplay detail is wrong: Request just that change, such as “make the coins larger,” instead of repeating the entire concept.
  • The assistant changed the wrong object: Identify the intended object by its project name and restate what must remain untouched.
  • The plan is too ambitious: Reduce it to a small first playable slice, then add systems after the core loop works.
  • The output behaves unexpectedly: Playtest it, report the observed issue, and ask for a specific correction.

Do not assume generated scripts or behavior are correct without checking them. Roblox’s Assistant tutorial advises testing generated code and reviewing samples. The Creator Hub prompt guide also notes, “Many AI tools are non-deterministic, meaning they don’t create the exact same output each time you ask them to do something.” Roblox’s Assistant tutorial adds, “There is more than one right way to make any particular request, but every word counts.” Small wording changes can produce different results, so treat generation as an iterative process rather than a guaranteed one-shot conversion.

What limits and safety rules should I account for?

Check the chosen tool’s documented scope before spending time on a prompt it may not support. For Roblox Build, the current documentation describes a mobile-first workflow focused on 2D and 2.5D and relatively simple game types. It also says requests may be refused or reframed because of content rules, account age settings, or copyright and intellectual-property restrictions. Prompting cannot override those constraints.

Roblox’s generative AI policy requires AI integrations to follow Community Standards and provide transparency. Experiences with player interactions that trigger AI responses must disclose that use in the Content Maturity questionnaire. Extended interactions have additional Restricted-labeling requirements for audiences under 18; creators should consult the policy for the applicable details before publishing.

Some Build workflow details can affect what happens to a project: the reviewed Creator Hub documentation says Build games default to an age-16-and-older setting, changing the audience involves Roblox Select review, and editing a Build game in Studio permanently converts it to a standard Studio game and removes Build status for that version. Build’s prompt allowance and credit rules can change, so consult the live Build documentation for current terms before relying on them.
