If your browser says a website may be dangerous, close the page and don’t continue. Don’t enter a password, payment details, or personal information, and don’t download anything the page offers. Google Chrome Help puts it plainly: “If you see this warning, we recommend that you don’t visit the site.”
If you’re asking, “What should I do if a website says it may be dangerous?” the answer depends on whether you only saw the warning or also shared information, paid, or installed something. A warning is a protective signal—not proof that your device is infected or that every page on the domain is malicious.

What to do when the warning appears
- Stop interacting with the page. Close the tab or use the browser’s Back control. Don’t choose options such as Continue, Download, Update, Scan, or Call support. Google Chrome Help warns that virus prompts may try to get you to download harmful software.
- Don’t use contact information shown on the page. If it claims to be from a bank, retailer, delivery company, employer, or government office, open a new tab and reach the organization through a saved favorite or a trusted address. Contact it using details from its official site, a bill, or a membership card.
- Keep browser protection enabled. Chrome says turning off Safe Browsing also turns off download warnings and does not recommend doing so.
- Report the site if appropriate. In Microsoft Edge, use Settings and More > Help and feedback > Report unsafe site. Chrome’s unsafe-site help also describes feedback routes for sites marked dangerous.
- Choose a recovery step based on what happened. Seeing a warning alone is not evidence that your device is infected. The response changes if you entered a password, shared financial details, or downloaded or installed a file.
Chrome says warnings can relate to phishing, social engineering, malware, or unwanted software, and that Safe Browsing maintains a list of sites that might present such risks. Microsoft describes an Edge SmartScreen warning as a signal that a site may try to trick you into installing something dangerous or revealing passwords or card numbers. These are descriptions of protective systems, not proof that a crime occurred or that every URL on a domain has the same status.

- Note which account and password you entered, and where you entered them.
- Change the affected password immediately. Change it anywhere else you reused it, and use a unique password for each account.
- Turn on multifactor authentication (MFA) where it’s available.
- If you used a work or school account, tell your IT or security team.
If you shared financial details or paid
Contact your bank, card issuer, or other financial institution promptly through its official app, the number on your card or statement, or a website you navigate to independently. Explain that your details may have been exposed or that you paid a suspected scammer. If you lost money or experienced identity theft, Microsoft advises reporting it to local law enforcement.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
If you downloaded or installed a file or app
Don’t open more files from the suspicious source. If a fake support prompt persuaded you to install software, Microsoft’s guidance is to uninstall applications the scammer requested, run a full Microsoft Defender Antivirus scan, and apply security updates. Change passwords and monitor accounts for unusual sign-ins if the incident involved that kind of scam.
A scan is a useful step, not a guarantee that a device is clean. For a work- or school-managed device, contact IT. If suspicious activity or unauthorized access continues, seek qualified technical help.

If you called a pop-up number or gave someone remote access
Treat the pop-up and its contact details as untrusted. Microsoft says its error and warning messages never include a phone number and advises against calling a number shown in a pop-up. If you installed software or paid after speaking with someone, follow the applicable account, financial, and device steps above.

Could the warning be a mistake?
Yes, a legitimate site can be compromised or flagged, and a suspicious-site notice can concern a site that may be legitimate. That possibility is a reason to verify independently—not to bypass the warning. Open a new tab and find the organization through a trusted route; contact it using a number or address you already trust, rather than anything on the warning page.

If you own a site that Microsoft SmartScreen has flagged incorrectly, Microsoft provides a process to report it as safe and request a review. That is a remedy for site owners, not a reason for visitors to proceed through a warning.
