What to do first if the ring feels uncomfortable
Remove the ring if you can do so safely. Do not keep wearing it through pain, numbness, pinching, or signs that it is restricting circulation. A smart ring should stay secure while remaining comfortable; constant pressure or difficult removal is not a good fit.

Try another supported finger or your other hand only if the ring then sits securely and comfortably. Oura advises changing fingers or adjusting size if pinching persists or marks do not fade shortly after removal. RingConn likewise says its sizing ring should not be painful, restrict circulation, or be difficult to remove. If the ring is stuck or you have significant swelling, pain, numbness, or circulation concerns, seek appropriate medical assistance and contact the manufacturer for model-specific help. Use the sizing kit and instructions for the exact brand and generation. Smart-ring sizes are not necessarily the same as ordinary jewelry sizes, and sizing can differ between generations. Oura recommends using the kit for the ring generation you intend to wear; RingConn says its sizes differ from regular ring sizes.

- Wear it through ordinary daytime activity and sleep for at least 24 hours, as Oura and RingConn recommend.
- Check that it stays in place and maintains sensor contact without rotating freely or leaving a gap, but can still be removed comfortably.
- If the actual ring fits differently from the sizer or remains uncomfortable, contact the manufacturer rather than forcing a size that causes symptoms.
Finger size can change with time of day, activity, temperature, hydration, meals, and sleep. A fit that seems right at one moment may not remain comfortable throughout the day and night.
Why smart-ring readings may be inconsistent
Fit and sensor contact are common things to check, but they are not the only possible causes of missing or changing data. Oura lists loose fit, dirty sensors, cold fingers, movement, and sleeping positions that restrict circulation among possible reasons for gaps in overnight heart-rate data. Its guidance for overnight blood-oxygen readings also identifies sensor orientation, movement, sleeping position, environmental or physiological factors, and hardware or algorithm changes as possible influences.

Small night-to-night variation can be expected. Compare trends over time and read the manufacturer’s explanation for the specific metric rather than judging the ring by one value. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish that one smart-ring brand measures more accurately than another.
Checks for missing or unreliable data
Fit, orientation, and clean sensors
Start with a secure, comfortable fit and follow the orientation instructions for your own ring. For Oura Ring 4, Oura says to position the sensors against the palm side of the finger. For Oura overnight heart-rate data, it also recommends checking that the ring is snug and its LED sensors sit beneath the finger. Clean the sensors as the manufacturer directs; Oura recommends washing them with soap and water and drying thoroughly with a soft cloth.

Charge, connection, and updates
Check that the ring has enough charge, that it can sync with the phone, and that the app and ring firmware are current. For missing Oura blood-oxygen data, the company specifically advises having at least 30% charge before bed, keeping Airplane Mode off, and enabling Bluetooth for syncing. Those settings and thresholds are Oura-specific; check the instructions for another brand instead of assuming they apply.
Known issues and model-specific troubleshooting
Check the manufacturer’s current known-issues page and troubleshooting steps, since software issues can affect data shown in the app. Oura’s known-issues page, dated October 1, 2026 in the version consulted, lists issue status and workarounds; its contents may change. Follow the reset instructions for your specific model rather than trying a generic reset procedure.

For Oura heart-rate gaps, the company suggests checking fit and sensors and then trying a soft reset. It advises wearing the ring for 24 hours afterward to see whether daytime heart-rate data collects and syncs; contact Oura support if it still does not. That timing is part of Oura’s workflow, not a guarantee or a universal step for every smart ring.

Look for a sustained pattern, account for fit and other factors that can affect the specific metric, and consult the maker’s explanation. Do not change medication, nutrition, or workouts based only on smart-ring data. Oura advises consulting a doctor or other medical professional before making such changes, and its ring is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, monitor, or prevent medical conditions. When to contact the manufacturer
- The ring remains painful, pinches repeatedly, causes numbness, or is difficult to remove.
- The fit remains loose or uncomfortable after checking the exact-model sizing guidance.
- Data gaps continue after checking fit, orientation, cleanliness, charge, connection, and updates.
- The maker’s current troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue, or you need help with a stuck ring or possible hardware fault.
When you contact support, provide the exact ring model and generation, the affected metric, when the gaps or variation occur, and the checks you have already tried. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for any reset or further testing.
