First, save the contract rules and every record of your position, then ask the platform—in writing—which rule and official result it used. A suspension is not necessarily a final settlement, and “void” does not guarantee a full refund: the contract’s exact terms, applicable rule version, and your location matter.
What to do right away
- Find the complete rules for that exact contract. Save the contract’s full terms, including its rule version and any amendment notice. A market title or short summary may not explain how a suspension, restart, postponement, forfeiture, or abandonment affects settlement.
- Preserve the records. Keep the contract ticker or ID, position details, transaction history, screenshots or downloads of the rules, the suspension or void notice, and relevant timestamps. Save the official game result and any correction to it, if available.
- Ask support for a written explanation. Request the precise rule clause and version applied, the official source or event status used, any restart or delay window, and the settlement calculation. Keep the response and your support ticket number.
- Compare the explanation with the contract. Check whether the terms require a restart window, use a league-declared result, distinguish pre-kickoff from post-kickoff forfeits, or allow settlement at the last fair price. Do not assume that a suspension means the market will be voided or that a void means a full refund.
- Escalate proportionately. If the amount is material, the platform will not explain its decision, or you suspect fraud or use of nonpublic information, consider an appropriate complaint route or qualified advice in your jurisdiction. The sources available do not establish a universal appeal channel or deadline.
Why a suspension or void may not mean a refund
Suspension is a status, not necessarily the outcome
A platform may pause trading while an event is delayed or its status is unclear. Depending on the contract, the market might resume, settle on an official result, or be resolved another way. The word “suspended” by itself does not determine what happens to your position.

Void treatment depends on the contract
Sports-event rules can specify different outcomes for delays, restarts, postponements, abandonment, venue changes, and forfeits. Some CFTC filing-index summaries for particular Kalshi amendments describe settlement at the last fair price in certain circumstances; another summary says a pre-kickoff forfeit resolves to the last fair price while a post-kickoff forfeit follows the league’s official final result. What to check in the contract rules
- Event-status triggers: What counts as a suspension, postponement, abandonment, or completed event?
- Restart or delay window: How long can the event be delayed or paused before a different settlement rule applies?
- Official result source: Which league, governing body, or other source determines the outcome, and how are later corrections handled?
- Forfeit timing: Do the rules treat a forfeit before kickoff differently from one after play begins?
- Settlement method: Does the specific circumstance produce a binary result, a refund, or settlement at a stated price such as the last fair price?
- Rule version and amendments: Which version governed when you entered the contract, and do the terms explain how amendments apply?
These variables can differ by sport, market type, and rule version. A filing-index description or a rule from a different contract is not enough to determine your payout.
How to frame a useful support request
Keep the request factual and specific. Include the contract ID, event, position, notice date, and the settlement you are questioning. Ask the operator to provide:

- the exact clause and version it applied;
- the event-status information and official source used;
- the restart, delay, or other time window relevant to the decision; and
- the calculation that produced the settlement amount.
Attach copies of your saved records and request a written response. If the reply cites a rule, compare that wording with the full contract terms rather than relying on a paraphrase.

Sports event contracts’ legal status is contested and location-specific. In KalshiEX, LLC v. Assad, filed August 28, 2026, a Ninth Circuit panel affirmed in part the dissolution of a preliminary injunction restricting Nevada enforcement concerning Kalshi sports contracts and remanded the election-contract issue. The panel concluded Kalshi had not shown a likelihood that federal law preempts Nevada gaming regulation as applied to those sports contracts. In a separate case, KalshiEX LLC v. William Orgel, filed September 25, 2026, the Sixth Circuit held that Kalshi had not shown its sports contracts satisfied the statutory definition of a “swap” within the CFTC’s exclusive jurisdiction. The court also vacated a Tennessee preliminary injunction and remanded. That decision involved Ohio and Tennessee proceedings; it does not resolve the status of every operator or every state. These cases concern distinct proceedings and state-law contexts. Whether a particular route is relevant can depend on your location, the operator, the product, and the litigation posture. Do not treat either decision as proof that sports contracts are legal or illegal everywhere.
