A visible sensor or indicator alone does not establish what was recorded, whether it was transmitted or retained, or whether the recording violated a law.
What should you do first?
- Save the ride record. Keep the receipt or ride ID, operator name, date and approximate time, and pickup and drop-off area. Save relevant app notices, support messages, or screenshots.
- Write down what you actually observed. Note whether you saw a camera or microphone indicator, received a recording notice, spoke with support, or experienced an event such as a safety stop. Separate what you saw or heard from what you infer may have happened.
- Contact the operator. Use the app’s support channel or its privacy-request route. Identify the ride and ask for a written response about the data collected, recording or transmission triggers, access and recipients, retention, and available access, deletion, or opt-out rights.
- Keep the correspondence. Save your request and the response. Do not send passwords, financial account numbers, or other sensitive information that is not needed to identify the ride.
If a dispute or investigation is ongoing, ask whether relevant data can be preserved before making a deletion request.

Does a camera or microphone mean the robotaxi recorded you?
Not necessarily. A sensor may be installed for several functions, and an indicator may show that a device is active without establishing whether a particular conversation or image was transmitted, retained, or reviewed. Ask about the specific ride, the sensor involved, what triggered any collection, and what happened to the resulting data.

Recording rules depend on the location, the type of recording, the circumstances, and the current terms. Whether consent was legally required—or whether a notice or acknowledgement was enough—cannot be decided from a sensor’s presence alone. For example, a Waymo filing with the California Public Utilities Commission from December 2022 describes telling passengers they would ride in a driverless vehicle and obtaining an acknowledgement during app onboarding. That is notice about driverless service, not proof of blanket consent to every possible recording; the filing also does not establish that its quoted onboarding language remains current.

What do Waymo and Tesla say their robotaxis do?
The operators describe different sensors, triggers, and data flows. The table summarizes their published statements; these are operator claims, not independent verification that a particular ride produced or transmitted a recording.

The post does not establish every recording’s retention period or every request process. How should you ask for information or footage from your ride?
Make the request specific enough for the operator to identify the trip and answer separately about collection, transmission, access, and retention. For example:

Please tell me whether audio, video, or other relevant data was collected; what triggered collection and why; whether it was transmitted or processed locally; who accessed or received it; how long it is retained; and how I can request access, deletion, or exercise any available opt-out rights. If this matter is under review, please tell me whether relevant data can be preserved while the request is pending.

Use the operator’s current app support or privacy channel, and follow its identity-verification process without volunteering unrelated sensitive details. A request for information or footage does not guarantee that the operator will provide it; available procedures and rights depend on the service, the data, and applicable law.

Can you make the operator delete a recording?
Ask whether data from the identified trip exists, how long it is retained, and whether deletion is available for that specific data. Do not assume that every recording is linked to your account or that an operator can delete data subject to a safety review, legal requirement, or other stated basis. Tesla’s notice, for instance, lists purpose, relationship, contract, consent, and legal requirements among its retention criteria but supplies no single retention period for all recordings. Start with the operator’s support or privacy channel for a question about a particular trip’s data. If the concern also involves a safety incident with an autonomous vehicle on California public roads, the California DMV AV Incident Form accepts feedback or incident reports. The DMV page directs people with autonomous-vehicle safety complaints to NHTSA’s Automated Vehicle Complaint Form or the Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236. These are safety and incident routes, not established privacy-only complaint channels.

Public regulatory reporting has limits: California’s CPUC organizes autonomous-vehicle reports by reporting period and carrier, and says some fields may be redacted while confidentiality claims are under review.
