If a newly installed PC game will not open, first record any error, restart Windows, and try again. Then check the game’s requirements, install pending system and graphics-driver updates, and use the launcher’s verify or repair option. If the message points to a missing executable or a runtime such as DirectX or Visual C++, follow that clue rather than applying random fixes. The right cause varies by game and PC, so work through these low-risk checks before reinstalling or considering hardware changes.
Start by identifying what “won’t launch” means
A game that does not reach its menu may be crashing immediately rather than failing to start at all. Steam Support notes that launch problems have multiple possible causes and vary with each PC’s hardware and software configuration. Read its general launch troubleshooting guide for the platform’s broad checks.

- Write down the exact error text, if one appears.
- Note whether the launcher changes to “Running” or a similar state, and whether the game process appears briefly and closes.
- Save an uncropped screenshot of the message. It can help support identify the error later.
Restart Windows, then try launching the game once more. A restart is a useful first check, not a guaranteed fix.

Compare your PC with the minimum requirements published for the exact game. Check the Windows version, processor, memory, graphics hardware, and available storage. Steam games list requirements on their store pages; other launchers and publishers may publish them elsewhere. Capcom warns that a system below a game’s minimum requirements may not run it; see its Steam game troubleshooting guidance.

If the PC meets the listed requirements, install pending Windows updates and current graphics drivers from Windows Update or the graphics-card maker. Steam and Capcom both include system and driver updates among their general troubleshooting checks. If the PC does not meet a requirement, check the game publisher’s supported hardware guidance before deciding what to do; the launch symptom alone does not establish that an upgrade is needed.
Verify or repair the game files in its launcher
Use the launcher’s built-in file verification or repair option before deleting game files or reinstalling. Verification checks whether the installed files are correct and can replace missing or damaged content. Steam explains its process in Verify Integrity of Game Files. Menu names and locations differ between Steam, Epic, Rockstar Games Launcher, and other platforms, so use the instructions for the launcher where you installed the game.
Wait for the check to finish, allow the launcher to download any files it identifies as missing or damaged, and then try again. Rockstar’s GTAV PC troubleshooting guide also directs players to verify game files in its launcher, Steam, or Epic Games Launcher. That is a game-specific example; follow your own game’s support instructions if they differ.

Check for a security block or a background-software conflict
If the error says “Missing Executable”
Check your antivirus or Windows security history for a quarantined file related to the game. Steam says a security-software quarantine is a common cause of its “Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)” error; a failed or incomplete download can also leave a file missing.
Only restore or allow a quarantined file if you are confident it came from the legitimate game installation and the detection is a false positive. After restoring it, verify the game files in the launcher. Do not disable antivirus protection as a routine troubleshooting step. Capcom discusses adding exclusions for its game files in its support guidance, but exclusions are publisher-specific: confirm the file’s source and the detection before following that advice.
If there is no missing-file message
Close nonessential background programs and utilities, then try launching the game again. This can help identify a software conflict without changing the game installation. Avoid closing processes you do not recognize or making broad security changes; if a publisher recommends a specific diagnostic test, follow its instructions and restore any temporary setting afterward.

Use runtime fixes only when the error points to one
If the message specifically names DirectX, Direct3D, or Microsoft Visual C++, treat the wording as a clue. Check for the runtime installer included with the game, or follow the relevant official Microsoft installation guidance. Rockstar, for example, points GTAV players to redistributables in the game’s installation folder for certain DirectX or Visual C++ errors. That route is for the named game and error, not a universal fix.
For Visual C++, Microsoft advises using installers downloaded from Microsoft and signed by Microsoft. Its Visual C++ Redistributable installation troubleshooting guidance covers installer issues. Avoid third-party “all-in-one” runtime bundles and do not delete system DLL files; these steps can add risk without addressing the reported problem.

If the checks above do not resolve the problem, use the game publisher’s support for a game-specific error, or the platform’s support for a launcher, account, or download problem. Steam advises contacting the game’s developer when its general launch guidance does not help. Publisher instructions may ask for diagnostic files: Capcom, for example, explains how to save DxDiag and requests system details, while Rockstar’s GTAV guide identifies launcher logs and DxDiag or MSInfo.
