In the console, choose a Claude model in the catalog and open its playground. For applications, use the bedrock-runtime endpoint; choose Converse for a common message interface when the model supports it, or InvokeModel or Anthropic Messages when you need a model-specific request format. Model availability, access requirements, and supported features depend on your AWS account and Region.
Try Claude in the Amazon Bedrock console
- Sign in to the AWS Management Console and open Amazon Bedrock.
- Choose a supported AWS Region, then open the model catalog and select an Anthropic Claude model available to your account there. Check the model card for its current capabilities and access instructions.
- Open the model’s playground, enter a prompt, and submit it to explore the model interactively.
The console is a convenient first stop because it presents model-specific instructions for the selected account and Region. Availability and playground options can vary by model and Region. AWS says many models are enabled by default where supported, but Anthropic models require users to submit first-time-use details before invocation. AWS model access documentation and the model card describe the requirements that apply to your account.

Check access before troubleshooting code
Before making a request, verify the prerequisites below. Bedrock access is determined at the AWS account level, so an account in an organization may have different entitlements from another account in the same organization.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

- Region and model: Confirm that the specific Claude model is supported in the Region selected for the console or API client. Model IDs and feature support change; use the current catalog and model reference rather than relying on an old example.
- Anthropic first-use details: Submit the required first-time-use information for Anthropic models before invoking them.
- Permissions: Check the calling identity’s Bedrock permissions and any required AWS Marketplace permissions.
- Account setup: Make sure the AWS account has a valid payment method and the required model entitlement.
When an invocation returns AccessDeniedException, first recheck these account, permission, and Region requirements. Access propagation or subscription setup may take time; changing request code will not resolve a missing entitlement.

Choose an API that fits the Claude model and application
Amazon Bedrock recommends the bedrock-runtime endpoint for new applications. The right operation depends on the selected model’s compatibility and the request format your application needs.
| API | Use it when | Request format and considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Converse or ConverseStream | You are building a conversational application or want a common message interface across message-capable models. | Uses Bedrock’s message structure and common inference configuration. Supports features such as tool configuration and guardrails; confirm support for the chosen Claude model. Converse calls require bedrock:InvokeModel; streaming requires bedrock:InvokeModelWithResponseStream. AWS Converse documentation |
| InvokeModel | You need direct access to a model’s request and response format. | Uses the model-specific body documented for the selected Claude model. Check the model reference for supported operations and features. AWS model parameters reference |
| Anthropic Messages API | You want to send requests using Anthropic’s Messages format. | AWS documents endpoint and Anthropic version requirements, with authentication options that depend on the endpoint. Check AWS’s current instructions before choosing between bedrock-runtime and bedrock-mantle. AWS Messages API documentation |
AWS describes Converse as a consistent API for Amazon Bedrock models that support messages. That does not mean every Claude model supports every Converse feature. Check the selected model’s documentation before designing around streaming, tool use, guardrails, or another capability. AWS supported models and features
Set up authentication safely
AWS’s quickstart demonstrates short-term API key authentication for an initial request. AWS positions API keys as a way to get started or explore; for production applications, use IAM roles or temporary credentials. Avoid embedding durable credentials in source code. The SDK and endpoint you choose determine how credentials are supplied, so follow the relevant AWS SDK guidance and grant only the permissions the application needs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor Converse, the required authorization action is bedrock:InvokeModel; for streaming Converse, it is bedrock:InvokeModelWithResponseStream. Anthropic Messages authentication depends on the endpoint: AWS documents SigV4, Bedrock API keys, or a short-term bearer token for bedrock-runtime, while bedrock-mantle has its own options. Review the current AWS Bedrock API key guidance and the Messages API documentation before configuring credentials.
Make a first request with Python and Converse
Install and configure the AWS SDK for Python (boto3), ensure the calling identity has access, and use a Region where your selected model is available. The example below follows AWS’s documented Converse request pattern. Replace the placeholder with a model ID currently listed for your account and Region; the example does not guarantee that any particular model ID remains available.
import boto3
client = boto3.client("bedrock-runtime", region_name="us-east-1")
response = client.converse(
modelId="<current-supported-claude-model-id>",
messages=[{"role": "user", "content": [{"text": "Hello"}]}],
)
print(response)
The request sends one user message and prints the returned response object. For a different Region, change region_name and confirm the model is supported there. AWS provides further examples for Converse, InvokeModel, and Anthropic Messages in its Bedrock Runtime examples and Bedrock getting-started guide.
