If your goal, time horizon, risk tolerance, and financial circumstances still support that plan, rebalancing can move the portfolio back toward its intended risk profile. You may be able to do that with new contributions instead of selling, but check fees and possible tax consequences before trading. A decline in prices alone is not a reason to make an abrupt change.
This is general U.S. investor education, not an individualized allocation or tax recommendation. The SEC emphasizes that no single asset-allocation model is right for every financial goal.

First, decide whether the plan or only the portfolio has changed
A market correction can alter the percentages in a portfolio even when the investor’s goals have not changed. If one asset category falls more than another, it becomes a smaller share of the whole; if another holds up better or rises, its share grows. That shift can leave the portfolio with a different risk profile than the one the investor originally intended.
Rebalancing means bringing the portfolio back toward its chosen asset allocation after relative performance has changed the weights. It can restore the intended mix, but it does not guarantee a profit, prevent losses, or establish that the original mix is still suitable. The first question is therefore not “How far did the market fall?” but “Does my plan still fit my circumstances?”

Review the reasons behind the target
Write down the goal the portfolio is meant to fund, when you expect to use the money, and the allocation you selected for that goal. Then consider whether anything material has changed in your financial circumstances, income needs, or willingness and ability to tolerate risk. A goal that is close to spending may call for a different review than a distant goal, but the right allocation depends on the individual—not on a general rule about corrections.
If those underlying factors still support the target, a change in market prices by itself does not prove the target should change. If your goals or circumstances have materially changed, treat that as a plan review, not simply a rebalancing exercise. The SEC’s investor guidance cautions against rapid decisions that disregard long-term goals.
Measure how far the portfolio has drifted
Compare your current allocation with your intended allocation using the same categories on both sides. For example, if your plan specifies broad asset categories, group the holdings consistently before calculating their shares. Include relevant holdings across accounts where feasible; looking at one account in isolation can give an incomplete picture of the mix you own overall.

- Record the target. List each asset category and its intended percentage from your plan.
- Gather current values. Add the current value of holdings in each category. Use a consistent snapshot date so the comparison is meaningful.
- Calculate current weights. Divide each category’s value by the total value of the portfolio being reviewed, then express the result as a percentage.
- Compare the two sets of weights. Note which categories are above or below target and by how much. A difference is drift to review, not an automatic instruction to trade.
- Look inside the categories. Check whether a category has become concentrated or whether several funds overlap or focus narrowly. A portfolio can appear diversified by fund count while still having substantial overlap.
The SEC’s asset-allocation guide uses changes such as 60/40 becoming 80/20, or 80/20 becoming 85/15, as illustrations of how relative performance can shift a mix. Those are examples, not evidence of what a typical investor experienced in a correction or a prediction of future results.
Choose a rebalancing method that fits the situation
There is no universally best method. The practical choice depends in part on whether you need to sell holdings, whether you have new money to invest, and what fees or tax consequences may apply.
| Approach | What you do | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Use new money | Invest available contributions in the asset categories below their intended weights. | This can move the mix toward target without selling existing holdings. It depends on having contributions or other new money available and may not be enough to address a large drift quickly. |
| Redirect ongoing contributions | Change future contributions, such as payroll contributions, to favor underweight categories. | It can adjust the mix gradually without selling. Consider how quickly the contribution flow can change the overall allocation. |
| Sell overweight holdings and buy underweight ones | Trade holdings so the allocation moves closer to the target. | Review transaction fees and possible tax consequences before placing trades. The result depends on account type, holdings, and your circumstances. |
When contributions may be the simpler first move
If you are already adding money to the portfolio, directing some or all of the next contributions toward underweight categories may help restore the mix without selling. This is not a guarantee that the portfolio will reach its target by a particular date: the result also depends on the size and timing of contributions and on how holdings perform. Review the allocation after a preselected interval or threshold rather than assuming that one contribution permanently fixes the drift.

When selling needs more review
Selling an overweight holding can address drift directly, but a trade may have costs or tax effects. The SEC’s guide specifically advises considering whether a chosen rebalancing method will trigger transaction fees or tax consequences. There is no single tax result that applies to every investor: account type, what you hold, and your circumstances matter. If you are unsure about those effects, consult a tax professional before trading.
Set a review rule before the next market move
A written rule can help keep portfolio decisions from turning into reactions to headlines. Two common ways to structure a review are to check on a calendar schedule or to review when an allocation moves beyond a threshold you selected in advance.
- Calendar review: Pick a recurring review interval and compare the portfolio with its target then. SEC materials cite six- or twelve-month intervals as examples of schedules some experts recommend, not as a universal requirement or a study result.
- Threshold review: Decide in advance how much drift from the intended allocation will prompt a review. The threshold is a personal rule; the SEC does not prescribe one for every investor.
Rebalancing tends to work best relatively infrequently, according to SEC educational materials. That is a reason to avoid repeatedly trading in response to short-term market movement, not a direction to use a particular schedule. Choose a rule that you can follow and that makes sense for your plan, costs, and circumstances.

Check whether a target-date fund already rebalances
A target-date fund generally rebalances its own holdings over time, so an investor whose portfolio is mainly in one such fund may not need to make the same internal adjustments manually. That does not mean every fund with the same target year has the same investments, risk, or path for shifting its allocation.
Review the fund’s actual glide path—the way its allocation is designed to change over time—along with its fees and how it fits with your full portfolio. Other accounts and investments can change your overall exposure even if the target-date fund itself remains on its intended path. The year in a fund’s name is not, by itself, proof that the fund matches your needs.
Use a decision process, not a prediction about the market
- Pause. Do not trade solely because prices have fallen or a headline predicts what comes next.
- Revisit the plan. Confirm the goal, time horizon, intended allocation, risk tolerance, and relevant changes in your financial circumstances.
- Measure the current mix. Compare current weights with the target across relevant accounts where feasible, and check for concentration or overlap within categories.
- Choose a route. Consider new contributions or redirected ongoing contributions before deciding whether selling is needed.
- Review costs and taxes. Before selling, assess transaction fees and potential tax consequences for your account and holdings.
- Apply your review rule. Use your chosen calendar interval or drift threshold rather than making repeated changes in response to market noise.
This sequence separates two decisions that are easy to confuse: whether the intended allocation remains appropriate, and whether the current portfolio still matches it. A correction can make the second answer “no” without changing the first.

When individualized advice may help
Consider speaking with a qualified financial professional if your allocation is complicated, your goal is close to the point when you will spend the money, or you are uncertain whether the current plan fits a changed financial situation. A tax adviser may help assess account-specific consequences before a sale. Neither role eliminates investment risk, but professional guidance can help you evaluate factors that general investor-education materials cannot determine for you.
The SEC’s archived article, Is It Time to Rebalance Your Investment Portfolio?, includes a warning from Lori Schock, then Director of the SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Assistance, against rash decisions during volatility. The page says it is no longer being updated, so it is best treated as background; the SEC’s asset-allocation guide and target-date fund bulletin are more appropriate starting points for the main concepts discussed here.
