In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find the app, select its More options menu, and choose Uninstall. You can also find many apps under Start > All apps, or remove a desktop program from Control Panel if it is not available in Settings. Check what an app does before removing it: some components built into Windows cannot be uninstalled.
Where to find installed apps in Windows 11
Start with Settings when you want to review the apps installed on the PC. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Find the app in the list, select its More options menu, and choose Uninstall. Follow any confirmation prompt or instructions shown by the app’s uninstaller.

You can also check the Start menu: select Start > All apps. Apps appear in a list, with the most-used apps first and the remaining apps in alphabetical order. If you spot the app, right-click it and choose Uninstall. Depending on the app, Windows may open Settings or another uninstall flow to complete the removal.
If you cannot find an app in one place, check the other. The Start menu and Installed apps list are useful discovery points, but not every program is managed from the same Windows screen.

Choose the uninstall route that fits the app

Start or Settings is usually the simplest first attempt. Control Panel is a useful alternative for some traditional desktop programs. Microsoft documents more than one removal route because an app that does not appear in one location may be available through another.
How to decide whether an app is unnecessary
Before uninstalling, make sure you have identified the right app and that you no longer need it. An unfamiliar name is not enough reason to remove a program: it may support hardware, another app, or a Windows feature. If you are unsure, pause and check its purpose before proceeding rather than treating every unfamiliar entry as clutter.

- Look for the app in both Installed apps and the Start menu so you can confirm which entry you mean.
- Consider whether you still use the app or rely on it for a device, work task, or another program.
- If you do not recognize a program or its role is unclear, avoid removing it until you can identify it.
- Do not try to force-remove built-in Windows components. Microsoft notes that some apps and programs are built into Windows and cannot be uninstalled.
Removing unused apps may free storage and reduce background activity, but those benefits are not guaranteed for every app or PC. Uninstalling an app is not, by itself, a promise of a particular speed improvement.
What to do if Windows cannot uninstall an app
First, confirm that you selected the correct app and try another supported route. If Settings cannot remove a desktop program, try its entry in Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. Choose Uninstall or Uninstall/Change and follow the program’s prompts.

If the uninstall fails or appears stuck
- Restart the PC. Then try the uninstall again from Settings, Start, or Control Panel.
- Check for Repair in Settings. If the app offers a Repair option, try it and then retry the uninstall.
- Try Reset if needed and available. Some apps expose Reset in Settings; it is not available for every desktop program. Afterward, try uninstalling again.
- Follow Windows’ troubleshooting prompts. The options differ between Microsoft Store apps and desktop programs, so use the prompts that match the kind of app you are removing.
For Windows 10 desktop programs that fail to install, uninstall, or update, Microsoft documents the Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter. That guidance is specifically for desktop-program problems in Windows 10; Store apps follow a different troubleshooting path.
Avoid substituting manual deletion of a program’s folders for an uninstall. Removing files directly is not the supported removal flow described here and may leave the program only partly removed.

If the app may be suspicious
An unwanted app is not automatically malware. Microsoft describes potentially unwanted apps as software that may show unwanted advertising, mine cryptocurrency, or offer unexpected apps. If you suspect malicious software rather than simply an app you no longer use, uninstall the unwanted software and run a scan with Windows Security.

Windows 10 and changing labels
The Settings path in this guide—Apps > Installed apps—is for Windows 11. Labels and menu positions can differ by Windows version and update. Microsoft’s Windows 10 performance guidance uses the older Apps & features label, so do not expect every Windows 11 screen name to match a Windows 10 PC.
