If a self-managed Jira or Confluence instance may have been compromised, activate your incident-response process, contain the suspected system in coordination with responders, and preserve evidence before cleanup. Then scope possible access, check the current Atlassian advisory for your exact product and version, and follow the response team’s recovery plan. Installing a patch can close a vulnerability; it does not establish whether an attacker already got in.
What to do first
Contact your organization’s security lead or incident-response team and handle the event under its incident-management process. The right containment and recovery steps depend on the product, version, deployment, dependencies, and evidence. Avoid treating a suspected compromise as a routine patching task.

- Coordinate containment. Work with responders to isolate the suspected host or service from the network or internet. Atlassian’s Data Center Security Checklist and Best Practices says to isolate a compromised instance. For Confluence Server and Data Center, Atlassian Support’s FAQ for CVE-2023-22515 advises shutting down and disconnecting a server determined to be compromised. Whether to isolate or shut down, and when, should account for the incident, dependencies, clustering, and evidence needs; there is no safe one-size-fits-all command.
- Preserve evidence. Secure relevant application, web-server, network, identity-provider, and security logs, along with other data that may help investigators. Do this before routine log rotation or cleanup removes it. Let responders direct forensic collection and chain-of-custody procedures. Atlassian’s Confluence FAQ asks customers seeking support to provide web-server access logs, including the attacker’s IP address when available.
- Record the deployment details. Identify whether the affected application is Jira Software, Jira Service Management, or Confluence, whether it is Server or Data Center, and its version. Note relevant infrastructure and connected identity or application services for the response team.
How to scope possible access and persistence
With the security team, review the evidence across the application and its connected environment. Look for unexpected accounts, administrator-group changes, privilege changes, unusual authentication or access events, unfamiliar plugins or apps, and unexpected changes to application files. Assess which Jira issues, Confluence pages, and connected services may have been accessed. Check systems that share users or credentials as well as the Jira or Confluence instance itself.

CVE-2023-22515 indicators are specific to that vulnerability
In its October 2023 advisory about CVE-2023-22515, Atlassian described exploitation of publicly accessible Confluence Server and Data Center instances and listed possible indicators including unexpected Confluence administrators or new users, unknown plugins, requests to /setup/*.action in network logs, and a particular setup-administrator message in atlassian-confluence-security.log. Atlassian rated that vulnerability CVSS 10. These are examples tied to CVE-2023-22515, not a complete forensic checklist for every incident or attack path.
How to choose containment, mitigation, and recovery
| Decision | What it addresses | What to establish with responders |
|---|---|---|
| Isolate or shut down | Limits continued access or activity on the suspected system. | Which action best contains this deployment while preserving needed evidence and accounting for dependencies. |
| Patch or apply a temporary mitigation | Addresses the vulnerability identified in a product-specific advisory. | The exact product, deployment type, version, fixed release, and mitigation in the current advisory. |
| Restore or rebuild | Returns service using a system the response team considers trustworthy. | Whether a backup is known-good and tested, or whether system integrity requires a rebuild. |
| Seek vendor or specialist support | Can help with product-specific guidance or investigation. | Support eligibility and whether internal responders need a qualified digital-forensics specialist. |
These are separate decisions, not interchangeable fixes. A patch addresses a vulnerability; it cannot determine whether an attacker accessed the system, remove every malicious change, or establish that exposed credentials are safe. Atlassian recommends involving the local security team or a specialist forensics firm if needed.
Check the current advisory for the exact product and version
Use Atlassian’s live security advisory for the affected product and deployment, and follow its current patch and mitigation instructions. Do not carry version guidance from one CVE to another or assume an advisory for Data Center applies to Server.

Current example: CVE-2026-21589
Atlassian’s advisory released October 5, 2026 identifies CVE-2026-21589 as an arbitrary file access vulnerability affecting listed Data Center products, including Confluence Data Center, Jira Software Data Center, and Jira Service Management Data Center. The advisory says all versions of those listed products are affected, provides product-specific fixed versions, and recommends checking access logs for evidence of exploitation. It assigns CVSS 9.3 under its internal severity assessment and gives a CVSS 4.0 vector.
Atlassian says affected Cloud products were patched and its investigation found no evidence of exploitation. That statement is about the Cloud products and does not mean a self-managed Data Center instance is patched or uncompromised. If immediate patching is not possible, the advisory recommends restricting internet access where possible and applying its specified mitigations. Check the advisory itself for the current fixed versions and instructions; its scope and version guidance are specific to this CVE.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to recover and communicate
Follow the incident-response team’s plan once it has assessed affected systems, data, and service integrity. Atlassian recommends restoring from backups or rebuilding compromised systems. Use a known-good backup only after validating its integrity and the recovery procedure; a backup alone does not close the intrusion path or resolve exposed credentials. Atlassian recommends database-native backups for Data Center. Its Confluence documentation notes that built-in backup and restore can be limited by available memory and CPU on large instances.

Keep internal stakeholders informed about incident status and any actions they need to take. If customer data may have been affected, coordinate external communications with legal, privacy, and incident-response functions. After recovery, document the root cause, review the response, update the response plan, and schedule security checks.
What to strengthen after recovery
Atlassian’s Data Center checklist recommends keeping products and dependencies current, maintaining tested backups, reviewing access controls, limiting administrator access, using identity-provider integration for SSO and MFA, protecting logs, and subscribing to security advisory alerts. These controls reduce future exposure; they do not replace investigating this incident.
Does Server end of support change the response?
Yes, it changes the support and lifecycle context, but it does not establish whether a particular vulnerability affects a particular deployment. Atlassian says support for most Server products ended February 15, 2024, with Fisheye and Crucible exceptions. Server and Data Center have distinct advisory scopes and available fixes, so verify the exact product and deployment against the relevant current advisory and consider support eligibility as part of the recovery plan.
