If a Galaxy Z Fold security update fails, first check the connection, storage, and download status, then retry. If repeated phone downloads fail, Samsung’s Smart Switch may offer another way to install the update. The right next step depends on the error, whether the update has been released for your exact carrier variant, and whether the phone still boots.
Start with the failure you can see
Samsung says that after an update fails, the device will recover from the error and try again in most cases, though some failures need additional action. Follow the matching step below rather than resetting the phone as a first resort.

- Network or download interruption: Restore a stable internet connection and retry. If the download is still available in the notification, resume it there.
- Insufficient storage: Free the amount of space the phone identifies, then try again.
- Update still downloading: Keep the phone connected and allow the download to finish before starting another attempt.
Samsung’s general troubleshooting instructions are available in its Software update failed on Samsung device guide and software update completion guidance. Menu labels and steps can vary by Fold generation, software version, carrier, and region.

An update that does not appear is not necessarily evidence of a fault. Samsung says releases can roll out in waves, and availability depends on the device variant and carrier. Check release information with the carrier that originally sold or supported the Fold. Even if the phone is now unlocked, Samsung notes that it may still require a SIM from its original carrier to receive an update; some carriers also require Wi-Fi.

Back up important data before emergency recovery or a factory data reset whenever the phone still allows it. Samsung warns that recovery after an interrupted update may require a factory reset, which can erase data. A reset is not a routine first step for a phone that still boots and can retry the update.
