The key cost detail: “no transaction fee” on standard market-maker-routed orders does not mean a cost-free trade. The spread can affect the price you pay, while exchange-routed orders may show a separate fee.
How to buy Bitcoin on Robinhood
These steps describe Robinhood’s US app and classic web experience. Robinhood’s supported platforms and features can vary by location and account, so follow the options shown in your own account.

- Open Crypto and search for Bitcoin.
- Select Bitcoin, then choose Buy.
- Enter the dollar amount or other amount offered in the order flow. Robinhood supports fractional crypto orders; its published minimum is $0.01 for market-maker-routed orders and $0.03 for exchange-routed orders.
- Open the Actions menu to confirm the order type, such as a market order or recurring investment.
- Select Review. Check the estimated price, current bid and ask, any displayed fee, and the order details.
- In the app, swipe up to submit. On classic web, select Submit buy after reviewing.
Bitcoin is listed for market-maker routing in Robinhood’s US app and classic web, and for fee-tier trading in the app and Robinhood Legend. Availability and routing eligibility can depend on platform and location; the order screen is the practical check for your account.

Why Robinhood’s chart price may differ from your buy price
The chart’s mid price is the midpoint between the current bid and ask; it is not a guaranteed execution price. Robinhood says, “Orders are filled at the bid or ask price, not at the mid price.” A buy generally executes at the ask, which is usually above the midpoint; a sell generally executes at the bid, usually below it. Robinhood says its order review screen shows current bid and ask prices.

For an order routed to a market maker, Robinhood says it receives compensation from market makers that is included in the spread. As of June 15, 2026, Robinhood disclosed that Robinhood Crypto receives $0.95 per $100 of notional crypto volume routed through market makers. That is Robinhood’s stated receipt from its market maker—not a universal spread, nor a guaranteed $0.95 charge on every $100 purchase. The actual price impact depends on the order and market conditions.
Market-maker routing versus exchange routing

Robinhood says all-in costs can be higher or lower with either route, and neither routing option guarantees better execution. The exchange-tier range is from Robinhood’s US fee-tier help page, accessed October 7, 2026; individual rates depend on the applicable tier and order handling.

How order type can affect exchange fees
Robinhood classifies market and stop orders as taker orders. A limit or stop-limit order can be a maker order if it is not matched immediately, or a taker order if it executes immediately. Robinhood says maker/taker pricing is rolling out gradually, so inspect the fee disclosure shown for your own account rather than assuming every customer sees the same pricing.
What to inspect before submitting
- Estimated execution price: Compare the estimate with the current bid and ask; the chart midpoint is not the buy execution price.
- Explicit fee: If exchange routing is available, check the fee displayed for this order and your applicable tier.
- Routing and eligibility: Confirm which route the order uses on your platform and whether the Bitcoin order qualifies for exchange routing.
- Order type: Market, stop, limit, and stop-limit orders can behave differently. On exchange routing, market and stop orders are takers; a limit or stop-limit order’s maker/taker status depends on whether it matches immediately.
Robinhood says a market buy is buffered up to 1% and a market sell up to 5%. If the price moves outside the relevant buffer, the order does not execute; an unexecuted market order may be automatically canceled after two minutes. A limit order can set a maximum buy price or minimum sell price under the platform’s rules, but it does not eliminate execution or market risk. Crypto trading is available 24/7 except during scheduled maintenance windows.

Where your Bitcoin is held—and which protections do not apply
Crypto services are provided through Robinhood Crypto, LLC, which is separate from the Robinhood Financial brokerage account. Robinhood says cryptocurrency is not FDIC insured or SIPC protected, and Robinhood Crypto is not a SIPC-protected brokerage account. A Bitcoin holding therefore does not have the same protections as a stock held in a brokerage account.
