If your foldable phone’s hinge will not move normally, stop and do not force it. Check only for an obvious loose object you can remove without prying; if the hinge still binds or the phone looks damaged or misaligned, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider. If the phone folds normally but its screen or controls are frozen, troubleshoot it as a software problem instead.
First, tell a hinge problem from a frozen phone
A phone that physically resists opening or closing needs a different response from one that moves normally but has an unresponsive screen. Restarting or updating Android will not fix a mechanically stuck hinge.

| What you notice | What it may indicate | Safe next step |
|---|---|---|
| The hinge resists, the phone will not open or close, or the halves appear misaligned | A mechanical obstruction or damage is possible; these symptoms do not establish a specific fault remotely. | Stop applying force. Check for a plainly visible loose obstruction without flexing the phone; seek service if the problem remains. |
| The phone opens and closes, but the screen or controls freeze | Software unresponsiveness may be involved. | Try Android’s restart, update, storage, and app troubleshooting steps. |
| A Pixel Fold’s hinge problem began in very cold conditions | Google’s model-specific temperature restriction may apply. | Do not open or close a Pixel Fold at or below -20°C (-4°F). |
If a foldable phone won’t open or close: safe steps
1. Stop forcing the hinge
Do not press hard on the middle of the flexible display, bend the phone backward, or use a fingernail or tool to pry it open. Samsung specifically warns against excessive force when unfolding or folding. Google also warns that the flexible screen is softer than a traditional display and that picking at its edges can cause damage. Samsung foldable phone care guidance; Google Pixel Fold safety guide.

Without flexing the device, look between the screens and at accessible parts of the hinge for something plainly visible, such as a card, coin, key, or loose grit. Remove an object only if it can be lifted away gently without prying or applying force. Do not insert anything into the hinge or try to dig out hidden debris. Samsung and Motorola caution that obstructions can interfere with closing or damage the phone, while Google warns that fine particles can damage the hinge.
