If an exchange flags a transaction with possible mixer exposure, verify the request through your logged-in account, preserve the original records, and answer with a truthful, chronological account of where the crypto came from and how it reached the exchange. A flag is a risk signal, not proof that you knowingly did anything illegal; submitting documents also does not guarantee that the exchange will release funds or restore account access.
Why did my crypto exchange flag my transaction?
Exchanges may review a deposit or transfer when its transaction history includes a mixer or tumbler, services that can obscure the movement of funds between addresses. FinCEN’s 2019 advisory lists mixer use as a suspicious-activity indicator in a specific context: transactions that suggest an effort to obscure illicit flows between known wallet addresses and darknet marketplaces. That indicator is not a finding that every person who interacted with a mixer committed a crime, nor does it establish what happened in an individual case. FinCEN Advisory FIN-2019-A003

An exchange’s review can turn on the transaction path, account information, jurisdiction, and the platform’s own procedures. FinCEN’s 2013 guidance distinguishes people who use virtual currency from businesses that exchange or administer it for purposes of federal Bank Secrecy Act rules; that distinction does not decide whether an exchange may review or restrict a customer account. 1. Confirm the request through the exchange
Open the exchange’s known official website or app yourself rather than following a link in an unexpected message. Check the authenticated account for a case number or information request, then use the platform’s secure upload or support process. Procedures differ. Kraken’s instructions, updated October 1, 2026, say to view and answer its additional-information request by logging in through a web browser; that is Kraken’s process, not a rule for all exchanges. - Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
2. Preserve the records
Save the notice, case number, messages, and relevant wallet and exchange records. Export transaction histories where available, and keep the original files unedited. For each relevant transfer, note the transaction ID, date, amount, asset, network, sending and receiving addresses, and any intermediary wallets you can identify. If a record is missing or incomplete, state that plainly instead of creating a reconstructed record that could be mistaken for an original.
3. Write a chronological explanation
Explain how you acquired the crypto, when it came into your control, which services or wallets handled it, and why the flagged transfer occurred. Describe any mixer hop or indirect exposure you know about, while clearly separating verified facts from what you cannot establish. Do not invent a source, conceal a transfer, alter documents, or claim wallet ownership you cannot support. If the transaction was legitimate, explain why and attach records that substantiate the account.

What documents prove the source of crypto funds?
There is no single document that proves provenance in every case. Choose records that connect the original source to the deposit and let the reviewer match the owner, dates, amounts, and addresses. The receiving exchange’s requirements and accepted formats vary by platform and circumstances.

| Record type | What it can help establish | Limits to check |
|---|---|---|
| Statement from an external exchange | Kraken identifies an external exchange statement showing identifying account and wallet information as possible evidence, alongside evidence of the original source. Coinbase also lists external-exchange statements as a possible record. | Check that the statement identifies the relevant account and covers the transactions and date range under review. A statement may not, by itself, show the original source. |
| Wallet transaction history | Coinbase lists external-wallet transaction histories showing dates, transaction types, amounts, and addresses. Kraken describes a crypto wallet transaction showing a transfer into an exchange account as possible evidence. | A transaction history can show movement, but may not identify who controlled a wallet or how the funds were first acquired. |
| Bank statement or acquisition record | Kraken describes a bank statement as possible evidence when crypto was already in an exchange account, and its source-of-funds guidance discusses evidence of the original source. | Include records that link the fiat payment or acquisition to the crypto and transfer in question; a bank entry alone may not show the full on-chain path. |
| Multiple records for multiple sources | Coinbase says to provide evidence for each source when there are multiple sources. | Organize each source separately and show how its records connect to the flagged deposit. |
These examples come from exchange guidance, not a universal regulator checklist. Kraken’s separate source-of-funds guidance, updated March 31, 2025, explains the kinds of documents it may request. How do I respond to an exchange source-of-funds request?
- Answer each question directly. Use the exchange’s secure account channel and refer to its case number. Keep the explanation focused on the requested transaction and its provenance.
- Match each claim to a record. Pair the acquisition source, exchange statement, or wallet history with the dates, amounts, and addresses it supports. Where more than one source contributed funds, explain and document each one.
- Identify gaps honestly. If you do not have a requested item, say so, explain why, and provide the records you do have. Do not fill a gap with an unsupported assertion.
- Check files before sending. Make documents legible and keep relevant details visible. Redact sensitive information only if the platform permits it and the redaction does not obscure facts it requested.
- Keep a submission record. Save copies of what you sent, when you sent it, and any confirmation. Monitor the authenticated account and official email for follow-up.
Kraken says it may request clarification, a different document, or a longer date range after reviewing a response. Follow-up requests are platform-specific, so check the exact instructions in your case rather than assuming one submission ends the review. Kraken’s response instructions

Consider consulting a lawyer experienced in digital assets and the relevant jurisdiction if the exchange identifies a sanctions match, law-enforcement request, formal legal hold, or seizure, or if the funds or potential exposure are substantial. Do not try to route assets around a review or evade screening.

OFAC states that sanctions obligations apply to digital-currency transactions as they do to traditional currency for people subject to its jurisdiction. Its guidance also identifies refusal to provide additional transaction information and inaccurate or incomplete KYC information as risk indicators. Those materials do not determine whether a particular person or transaction is subject to a prohibition; that depends on the facts and applicable jurisdiction.
