If a rear car door will not open from inside, first check whether its child-safety lock is on and follow the instructions in your vehicle’s owner’s manual. If the setting is off—or the door also will not open from outside—the cause may be a handle, cable, latch actuator, or model-specific electronic fault. Do not force the handle or try a generic door-panel removal procedure. If someone is trapped and in immediate danger, contact local emergency services.
Start by identifying which door will not open
Check whether the problem affects a rear door, whether it opens from outside, and whether a lock indicator or warning message is showing. A rear door that opens from outside but not inside is consistent with an engaged child-safety lock, but that symptom alone does not establish the cause.

Child-safety locks are intended to prevent rear doors from opening from inside. For example, Kia’s 2025 owner’s manual says its child-protector lock prevents the inner handle from opening the rear door while the outside handle remains usable. Use the owner’s manual for the exact year, make, model, and equipment. Controls differ: a manual selector may be on the rear-door edge, while an electronic system may be controlled by a switch near the driver. Do not assume that another vehicle’s location or reset procedure applies to yours.

- Manual selector: The cited Kia manual describes turning a selector at the rear-door edge with a key or screwdriver. Follow your own manual’s instructions rather than applying that example to another car.
- Electronic control: Hyundai’s 2025 manual says an illuminated electronic child-safety-lock indicator means the rear doors cannot be opened from inside. Ford’s 2024 Mustang Mach-E manual describes a driver-door control and an indicator when the child locks are enabled. Ford owner’s manuals Hyundai owner’s manuals
If the lock is engaged, deactivate it only when safe and appropriate for the occupants. On the cited Ford vehicle, the manual describes rolling down the rear window and using the outside handle, or asking someone outside to open the door. The cited Kia manual also says its outside handle works with the child lock active. Check for traffic and other hazards before opening the door, and supervise children; the lock is designed to keep them from opening a door while the vehicle is moving.
If an electronic system reports a child-safety-lock failure, use the instructions for that vehicle. Hyundai’s cited manual directs the owner to have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Hyundai dealer. That guidance does not establish a reset method for other makes or models.

If the setting is off, treat it as a possible fault
A door that still will not release after the child lock is confirmed off may have a mechanical or electrical problem. A BMW service bulletin lists the lock actuator, inner and outer Bowden cables, and inside handle among the areas technicians may inspect. These are possible fault categories, not a diagnosis for an unspecified vehicle. The bulletin directs technicians to BMW ISTA/AIR repair instructions; it is not a general DIY procedure. Electronic behavior can also be model-specific. GM bulletin PIT6288D describes a child-lock synchronization issue and possible preload from a misinstalled, binding, or kinked inside-handle cable. It applies to specified 2025 North American Cadillac Escalade/Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Suburban/Tahoe, and GMC Yukon/Yukon XL models, not other vehicles. Its checks should not be generalized. Arrange vehicle-specific help if it remains stuck
Contact a qualified repair shop or the manufacturer’s service department if the child lock is off and the door still will not open, if it will not open from either side, or if an electronic fault message remains. Give them the vehicle’s year, make, and model, which door is affected, whether it opens from outside, whether the lock control changes state, and any message displayed.
Ask the shop to explain the confirmed fault, the proposed repair and parts, and the estimate before authorizing work. If you are considering a replacement part, confirm compatibility for the exact vehicle and equipment, door position and side, and cable or connector arrangement. A latch or actuator should not be selected solely from the symptom; the cited service guidance does not establish fitment for your car. Avoid removing a door panel while the door is shut based on a generic online procedure: safe access and repair depend on the vehicle.

What the symptom can—and cannot—tell you
