The Bohr model puts an electron in a specific, quantized circular orbit around the nucleus. The quantum-mechanical model describes an electron’s state with a wavefunction, which gives probabilities for where it may be detected—not a fixed track. Both models include quantized energy levels. Bohr’s model is useful for hydrogen and other one-electron ions; quantum mechanics provides the broader framework for atoms with multiple electrons.
How the two models describe electrons
| Feature | Bohr model | Quantum-mechanical model |
|---|---|---|
| Electron description | A particle moving in an allowed circular orbit around the nucleus. | A quantum state described by a wavefunction; its probability density indicates where the electron may be detected. |
| Location | The model assigns the electron a definite orbit and radius. | An orbital describes a spatial probability distribution, not a definite path. |
| Energy | Only certain energy levels are allowed. | Allowed states also have quantized energies, specified along with other properties by quantum numbers. |
| Best-known scope | Hydrogen and, approximately, hydrogen-like ions with one electron. | Atoms with multiple electrons as well as one-electron systems, though detailed calculations can be more involved. |
Bohr’s picture is semiclassical: it combines classical circular motion with quantum rules that restrict the electron to certain orbits and energies. Quantum mechanics replaces the definite orbit with a state described by a wavefunction. The wavefunction is not a picture of a fuzzy material cloud; its probability interpretation tells us about the likelihood of detecting the electron in different regions. OpenStax College Physics 2e summarizes the shift this way: “As quantum mechanics was developed, it became clear that there are no well-defined orbits; rather, there are clouds of probability.”
Are orbits and orbitals the same?
No. A Bohr orbit is a path with a defined radius in the model. A quantum-mechanical orbital is a state whose wavefunction gives a probability distribution in space. It does not trace the route an electron follows around the nucleus. Calling an orbital an “electron cloud” can be a useful visual shorthand, but it should not be taken to mean the electron is literally spread out like a cloud of matter. OpenStax Chemistry 2e explains the quantum-mechanical description and probability interpretation.
What both models say about energy and spectra
Quantization is not the difference between the models: both allow only particular energies. In Bohr’s account of hydrogen, an electron moving between allowed energy levels accounts for the atom’s spectral lines. Quantum mechanics retains quantized states and transitions, while describing those states with wavefunctions and quantum numbers rather than fixed circular paths. OpenStax’s University Physics, Volume 3 gives hydrogen’s ground-state energy as −13.6 eV and discusses its quantized spectrum.

Bohr’s model was a major step because it explained key features of hydrogen’s spectrum with a clear rule for allowed energies. Quantum mechanics is the more general framework, but its greater scope does not make every spectral detail simple to calculate. The models differ in how they represent the electron and the systems they can adequately describe—not in whether atomic energies can be quantized.

Hydrogen has one electron, so Bohr’s model can treat the electron’s interaction with the nucleus without accounting for repulsion from other electrons. The same basic approach approximately extends to one-electron hydrogen-like ions. Helium has two electrons: their mutual interaction matters, and the simple Bohr model does not account for it. It therefore cannot adequately describe helium’s multielectron structure. OpenStax University Physics, Volume 3 discusses the limits of the Bohr model, including spectral-line doublets.

Which model should you use?
- For a first explanation of hydrogen’s energy levels: Bohr’s model is a useful introductory picture of quantization and spectral transitions.
- For orbitals, electron probability, or atoms with multiple electrons: use the quantum-mechanical model.
- When comparing them: remember that quantum mechanics changes the electron’s description, not the existence of quantized energies.
