If a boat is pinned against a dock, protect the people aboard and call for help if anyone is trapped or injured, the hull is taking on water, or the vessel is in immediate danger. Do not jump ashore, push off with your arms or legs, apply engine power, or release a loaded line as a guess: the safe response depends on the boat, dock, current, and lines.
What to do first
- Account for everyone. Put on life jackets if you can do so safely. Keep people clear of the gap between the boat and dock, the propeller, and any line under strain. Do not send anyone into the water to push the boat free. Current can exert substantial force, and pushing off with limbs or jumping ashore can cause injury. See the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission’s water-hazard guidance and the Broads Authority’s mooring advice.
- Check for immediate danger. Look for injuries, anyone trapped, hull damage, flooding, fire, and whether current or tide is worsening the situation. After a collision, Transport WA advises checking passengers and making sure there are no leaks; its types of boating emergency guidance is specific to Western Australia.
- Call for help early if safety is at risk. Contact your local emergency service or marine rescue using the channels and number for your location. In Western Australia, Transport WA’s emergency guidance, updated 22 May 2025, says to make a distress call on the listed frequencies, activate an EPIRB or PLB, or call 000 when immediate assistance is required. These details are not universal; follow local instructions.
- Give rescuers clear information. State the vessel’s position, what is happening, and how many people are aboard, then follow the responder’s directions. Transport WA distinguishes Mayday for grave and imminent danger requiring immediate assistance from Pan Pan for an urgent safety message that does not meet that distress threshold. Its marine-radio guidance lists Western Australia’s radio details; use the urgency terms and frequencies applicable where you are.
Why you should not improvise a release
A boat held against a dock may be affected by current, wind, tide, hull shape, propulsion, dock geometry, and the force on its mooring lines. Applying power or releasing a line without understanding those forces can worsen the situation or expose someone to a snapping line, crushing gap, or uncontrolled movement. The official guidance available for general boating emergencies, hazards, and mooring does not establish a universal maneuver for freeing a boat pinned against a dock. If a line is visibly loaded, the boat is being forced into the structure, or damage or flooding is possible, do not attempt a release; get help from marine rescue or a qualified operator.

When it may be safe to move the boat
Wait until the immediate danger has passed and a qualified person or local responder has assessed the situation. Before moving, the boat needs to be checked for hull or propulsion damage and there must be adequate clearance. Flow and water level can change; mooring guidance emphasizes considering local conditions such as wind, water level, and current. For example, the Broads Authority notes that tidal level at Great Yarmouth can rise and fall by up to 2 metres—a local figure, not a general tide range. See its mooring-up guidance.

Carry and know how to use appropriate safety equipment before setting out. Transport WA describes a marine radio as essential safety equipment and says a mobile phone is useful as a backup but does not replace one. Its channels and coverage guidance apply to Western Australia; check the rules and rescue contacts for your boating area. Wearable life jackets reduce risk if someone falls in, but they do not make it safe to push a pinned boat free.
